Mayberry was a simple life and at a simple time
Time gone by. Wasn't a perfect time in the world at large, but The AG Show was idyllic in what it represented. Like an old friend that kinda helped make you feel better. Still is.

Don Knotts was brilliant in TAGS! So funny.

I'm sure most people know this but originally Andy was the comedy man and Barney was the straight man. It's a good thing they switched it.

I don't remember ever having heard that. Can't imagine it the other way around, after having seen the characters played the way they were.

Their first collaboration was in the movie "No Time for Sergeants." Andy played a Gomer Pyle like character. Don was a Sergeant Carter like character.

Whistling a familiar tune in your honor...

A major piece of my childhood is gone...

One of my favorite actually read the screen play before I ever watched the movie.

Yeah, it didn't take them long to figure that one out. I hate to hear he's gone.

I didn't know that until recently either. I saw the Don Knotts Biography channel show.

Andy was one of my favorites. Thankfully, I can still see his show everyday.

Andy definitely portrayed a goofy guy prior to Andy Griffith. I remember seeing him in a movie for the first time and spent half the movie trying to convince myself it wasn't really him because he was so different than the calm, laid back Andy Griffith character from TV.

I meant on the Andy Griffith show. At the beginning Andy was the goofy one and Barney was the straight man.

I know :D I'm saying that the reason for that was that Andy typically played a goofy character in movies (at least the ones I have seen) and stand-up routines prior to that so it was logical that he would have been considered for that in the TV show.

True, IIRC, Andy and Don both thought it was funnier when Barney played the wise guy (and more believable since Andy was the sherriff). The two of them helped write and fill many of the episodes. Their comic influence is greater than I expected for a series that old.

Never saw that one. Was it any good? If I ever get the chance, I'll watch it... out of sheer curiosity.

All of those TV characters are so deeply ingrained in my memory, it's hard to think of anybody else playing Gomer Pyle but Jim Nabors, or Sergeant Carter but Frank Sutton... much less Andy Griffith and Don Knotts, respectively.

But that's looking back, where those that saw the movie first... before the TV shows aired... wouldn't have had a problem with it. Might have actually tripped them up seeing the way the TV shows were cast.

Andy was a very good dramatic actor. There is a movie that turns up on AMC with Patricia Neal from time to time in which he's a bad guy & he's excellent. I forget the name!
