There is still an idea around that we will go after a veteran WR of some kind soon.

Roy Williams, Chad Johnson and Anquan Boldin are mere pipe dreams. They would cost too much and I don't see them fitting very well. Plus, they are very important pieces of their team's plans. They aren't going to be given away, contract issues or pouting aside.

So what other options are there? To me, there is only one other veteran who might be capable of beating out Crayton that might be available.

Arnaz Battle.

I don't know how much anyone has watched him, but he is a very underrated player who is perhaps the best blocking WR you have never heard of.

He has historically had very sure hands (no drops in 2006 but had a horrible 2007). He had a terrible year last season and has skipped some OTAs for them as he appears destined for the third spot. With Mike Martz on board and a group that includes Issac Bruce, Bryant Johnson, Jason Hill, Josh Morgan, Ashley Lelie and two solid TEs in Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker, will there be enough balls to go around?

He is reportedly not happy he's not getting the chance to fight for his starting job with Bryant Johnson a favorite of new WR coach Jerry Sullivan and Nolan is not happy with his decision to skip workouts. He is most certainly worth a shot.

Plus, he does call Dallas home.;)

Battle won't be an upgrade over what we have.

I completely disagree. He would be upgrade over our backups and would probably give Crayton more than a run for his money. With better QB play, he'd get a great deal more respect. He plays the game right and reminds me of Hines Ward in many ways.

I think to many fans overrate what we have, Crayton in particular. He should be a third option, not a second.

He's a little frustrating to watch. Maybe it's who's been throwing to him, but he looks like he has a lot of potential at times and then just doesn't produce.

I'm really not sure he'd be a WORTHWHILE upgrade over our backups. He'd definitely be better than Hurd, but I don't want to stunt growth of Stanback and Austin.

I think if you put our backups who he is supposedly not better than on teams with the rubbish they have throwing the football, they would look inconsistent as well.

I think we have to wait to see what happens in camp. I like what we have in Hurd, Austin and the UDR Amendola.

I want to see what Miles of Smiles does seeing how hes reportedly is pushing crayton

This is exactly what I am speaking of in terms of overrating our players.

What has Amendola done again? Battle has started games and has produced.

One speculating media report from a bored writer later, and everyone thinks Austin is pushing Crayton :bang2:

Oh, and Battle is Brandon Lloyd part deux ;)

How bad was 2007 for him exactly?

Statistically, not as bad as it would seem. He actually had more TDs and posted a career high YPC. He dropped seven passes last year after not flubbing one in 2006.

What exactly has Battle done, though? You can blame his QB, but it's all speculation.

You can pretty much guarantee that if you put Amendola in a game and threw at him 100+ times, he'd produce at least as well as Battle.

In 2007, Battle had just above a 5.7 YPA. That's pretty bad. Very bad.

Other than the fact they have both worn the 49er uniform, they are nothing alike. Lloyd had a bad mental makeup. Battle lives up to his namesake. He is a self-made player who works.

:laugh2:

I thought you were smarter than to make statements like this.

In one breath you dismiss his actual NFL production as "speculation" and then guarantee Amendola could replicate it. What's speculative here? The player who has never done it and wasn't even drafted? Or the player that has been an NFL starter?

Uhhh....as I pointed out, his YPA was a terrible 5.7. Yes, you can pretty much guarantee that any WR that can make an NFL roster can match that sort of production.

Agreed.

Disagree. I believe they are possible in this order. Roy, Chad, Anq.

50/50 here.
Yes would cost alot. But that wont stop Jerry.
I think that Roy and Anq would fit well. Even Chad would straighten out if he got what he wanted(out of Bengirl city)

I dont think that Detroit or Cincy are thinking that their WR are important pieces.... both are on way out in way or another.

Yes it will cost us a little extra. But if we ultimately win the SB I wont care.

Uhhhh---you edited that in after I replied.

You have a point if you want to boil it down to numerical metrics like an amateur K.C. Joyner. I don't recognize rubbish like that, much less use it to promote a player like Amendola who would be fortunate to make any NFL team this year over a player who has shown he can actually play.

Do you recognize that taking 100+ pass attempts to amass 600 yards is terrible?

If not, I'll just stop discussing football with you altogether.

Julius Jones has proven he can "actually play" in the NFL. Should we have kept him instead of drafting Felix and Tashard? Of course not. Don't be an idiot.

Crayton is under no threat from anyone on the roster other than Terry Glenn. They just gave him a 16 million dollar contract.
