I get where Lil' Dorsett's coming from, but the guy is in his forties. His father retired when he was a teenager. Where is this incredibly delayed indignation coming from?

I somewhat agree, however it wouldn't be long until they ran out of numbers.

When Witten retires, will they issue #82 again? Same issue comes up.

If there a can't miss draft choice they make - they will issue the #.
Jerry - Jersey sales.

I love Tony Dorsett and I am sorry that he has had such intense experienced from head trauma through his later years.

But the sport was benefited by Tony, but not his children aren't entitled because of it. They can share our joy in his memory, but privileged as well...is another storyline. That resoect is bestowed, and not an item to be demanded.

Demands of privilege shouldn't force their way through a sense of sportsmanship by a long supportive fan group.

I'm not crying with Michael Irvin's number being used.

No player is worthy of retiring a number, IMO.

Interesting.

I am inclined to agree except in very special cases.

For example if the Niners were to retire (I don't know if they did or not) the #80 I'd get that. He's possibly the best football player ever, definitely the best one I've ever seen play (Regardless of position), so I could see that.

The Bulls retiring the #23 that makes sense.

But I'm not one of those guys whose real big about retiring numbers. I love that Dallas hasn't ever retired the #88.

Tweet him & ask. You might get an answer.

Cowboys do not retire numbers, but it was up to the equipment manager, Mike McCoy, I believe that's who it was. to give out numbers.
#8, #12, #22 won't be given out, and I think #74, was a very long time before it was given out. And then it was for TC purposes or a long time too.

Kind of partial to Dorsett, and it did bother me at times when I seen a player wearing it. But now, kind of think, well they give out #88, but to worth while candidates. So they should give out 33 to a potential great RB, not just to anyone.

IMO who cares its a number. 54 has been given out over and over again. Tell his son to shut up and let his dad talk if he has a problem because the son is nobody.

I could see 88 never being retired. It's more of a passing of the torch #. Atleast from Irvin to Des.

12 is well... Roger
22 enough said.

8 could be passed on like 88

lol.... 8 holds 12's records and won more Super Bowl's too. 8 is well... Aikman

Only 22 deserves retiring.

Oh I don't disagree at all but if you take a census on it. Troy wasn't great and he only benefitted from a great system with emmitt and Irvin. (I don't agree with that complete statement) and... In Roger's case, he was/is a god. No one will say anything similar. They will make the case that his teams weren't as good etc... Thereby giving hi as excuse for not winning more superbowls.

Emmitt is my all time favorite player for the Dallas Cowboys and honestly I'm not sure I'd even retire his number.

I'd be tempted but I don't think I would.

In other sports like baseball, hockey, basketball I get it the overall team is smaller so the chances of running out of numbers within 20-30 years is small not to mention there is no rule on what positions get what number. Football you have 53 man roster, you start retiring numbers it is very possible you run out of WR/TE numbers, or QB/K/P numbers.

I'm not one that cares about retiring a stupid number the cowboys are doing it the right way and withholding the special numbers for worthy players.

Antonio Bryant wore 88 as well. Jerry wanted him to be the next Michael Irvin.

Dorsett Jr is 100% right. They should never give out a number of a former great to anyone, even when the team has 90 players at the start of camp. In fact, they shouldn't give out numbers at all, they should put chemical elements from the Periodic Table on the jerseys. Picture Marinelli storming onto the practice field yelling "GADILINIUM!!! Get your hands up or Titanium is going to pancake you!!!!"

Yeah, I'm kidding.
