Any suggestions on QB Coach for Romo?

Wade Wilson is garbage and I do not know why he is still employed here.

Garrett, will have his hands full trying to scheme up, playcall and remember the basics, i.e, run game. For the record, I think he will do well.

But I'm of the strong opinion that Romo needs somebody who will stay on him about his mechanics, about getting rid of the ball, and being safe and smart with the ball. Someone who can get in his &*% and chew him out if need be.

Parcells always said Romo still needed coaching through the entire game and I think his regression last year was, in large part, due to the fact that did not occur. Did anybody ever see Wade on the sideline during a game? After a pick? All I ever saw was Romo alone looking morose.

So who could this new coach be? Anybody have any ideas, knowledge or insight as to possibles? Hopefully, in keeping with his mandate to make this offense "Romo-friendly" Jerry will ask himself "What has Wade (Wilson) done?" and make a move.

Great post and you make valid points, all of which I agree with.

I think all of Cowboy Nation, coaches included, fell in love with Romo, and forgot they still have to do their job and coach him. Because Romo obviously regressed last year. He needs to find a happy medium between the Parcells philosophy of throwing it away if its not there, and his style of play which is never say die gunsling it.

I remember when WW was brought on board everyone said it was a good hiring. Why? Simply because he played for us back in the day and is a known name around here? He did absolutely nothing with Grossman or Orton in Chicago. If anything Romo looked more like Grossman last year with his bad decisions and up and down play.

I am fully on board that we need a new QB coach. I'm a huge Jason Garrett fan and think he has the most input on Romo's game, but Wade is the QB coach. He's going to have plenty of say as well. From what I've seen so far, I'm not a big fan of it.

I'd say we'd have to wait a year at least, but I'm sure T.O. would be the perfect coach to set him straight.

I doubt there will be any more coaching changes. I don't think Romo regressed last year...he just got injured and missed 3 games. As a result, we lost to the Rams in his absence and finished 9-7 instead of 10-6.

That's how I choose to look at the 2008 season....and why not?

Romo said all the right things in terms of how he worked on his mechanics last year. Especially citing that he studied Brady's pocket presence etc.

However Brady is a tall, big armed, can make every throw QB with surgical accuracy.

Romo is a more mobile QB, excelling on shorter to intermediate throws - and should work on getting rid of the football when its not there. Because those great plays that we all know and love, 1 in every 4 times he gets 'cute' - he turns the ball over.

We need a coach that can help him understand how bad turnovers hurt the team, and that sometimes 'punting' on 2nd down isn't a great idea.

I keep hearing this on the board about how Romo needs to stop "being Brady"

Standing tall in the pocket is always a good thing. Watch the first three games of the year when Romo was getting protection. He was standing tall, not sliding back, and making the throws. The key is protection. Doesnt matter if Brady is tall, big, or strong armed. You always want your QB to stand tall in the pocket, and Brady/Manning are the best to learn from.

This is a good thing.

As far as getting rid of the ball, I still want to let him be creative, but to a certain degree. Make a play, get out of the pocket, and either get a few yards upfield and slide, or get rid of the ball. I dont want Romo throwing the ball away in the pocket. He has too much athleticism to do some things from the QB position that others cannot do.

Brady also had one of the most effective, if not most effective, short passing game with Wes Walker.... It kept the LBs off the line...

By studying Brady he actually worked on not sliding forward and making it harder on his protection.

But the big fellas up front played so poorly last year, I don't know if I can do a proper comparative analysis of Romo's mechanics from 07 to now. But I did know, he didn't learn the importance of turnovers last year. Thats something you can't study in the film room.

I would Like to see us get Palmer back. Eli Manning really improved when he went to the Giants and he was here the year Romo made the jump to starter.

I have to agree that Wilson is a waste of space on our coaching staff. He must have some pics of Jerry in a compromising position or something cause he is one of Jerry's pets.

I'm not debating that.

All I'm saying is that if you have a decent pocket, standing tall is always good, and mimicking Bradys presence is a good thing.

Our first three games w had outstanding protection. Then it fell apart. If he's under duress no way should he try to stay in there and get sacked. But the first three games I really saw a different Romo in the pocket that in previous games. He was standing tall, wasn't drifting around, and had great poise back there. Once our Oline fell apart though, and he eventually got injured, that was impossible to do anymore.
