We have a new defensive coach, added some other key coaches maybe a new play caller, we've cut some players who were holding us back, we have injured players on the mend, we will add some rookies and some FAs to an 8-8 team that was very close to the playoffs---what's not to be excited about.

Howdy Hoosier! I'm excited with the new regime on defense. I think Carter and Lee are going to flourish. I think keeping Spencer was a good move too, unlike some in here.

We won't be big players in FA, but I believe we will make up ground in the draft and begin fixing our O-line.

It's this type of baiting to get a reaction from another fan, just for your amusement, that makes me question whether you are a real fan or a casual fan.

I guess it's considered baiting nowadays. But not so long ago, it would have been considered a rather normal thread. My how this board had changed.

I'll repeat what I said in the other thread -- get over yourself. Seriously, who are you to say what type of fan a person others are? C

You do realize that when we extend Romo and Spencer, that will create between $15-18mm in cap space, right?

That's NOT to say we will spend that in FA, but the space will be there.

OK, so? It hasn't happened yet. So let's say Romo and Spencer are extended, and the space is there; then so are the aging and health-risk players. Spencer is borderline pro-bowl at his best, but he's had more years where he's been below pro-bowl level than he's had at pro-bowl level. I wouldn't extend him. Pay him this year then draft his replacement this year or next. I'd extend Romo, but only for 4 years max, else if he gets a 6 year deal, he'll never see the end of it, and the Boys will be paying dead-money on Romo for 2-3 years.

Even if the Cowboys had 15-18 million in cap space, and sign some FAs, are they better than SEA, SF, ATL? Wash? NYG? NO? GB?

This team is just not that good. And the main reason they're not that good is because they are not talented or not consistently healthy up the middle on offense or defense. Sure, they have some flashy, uber-talented perimeter guys, but good teams build from the inside out, not outside in. Jerry Jones continues to ignore this, and unless it changes, I have a very hard time seeing them being anything more than an 8-8 team.

Well, I'm not here to change your mind obviously.

But, imo, I think a healthy Cowboys and if they have a solid draft next month, is as good as anyone in the NFC East. We played Atlanta and NO pretty tough last season too.

I agree that we need more quality in the middle of the OL and DL. And I think we will improve there between now and the regular season.

I think if there was something positive to talk about, we would be all over it. I'm a Cowboy Fan.. My son who posts on this board is a Cowboy Fan. My Daughter is a Cowboy Fan. We all want this team to win. There are positives on this team, I think its headed in the right direction.. But how this team is structured right now.. Older expensive core.. Why spend more money or extend these players? They have no history of winning anything.. In business there is a saying why throw good money at bad money.. Did you see what Minnesota got For Percy Harvin? We don't have the talent or cap space to compete with SF, Seattle, Atlanta. After all the goal is to get to the Super Bowl. Not go 8-8.. I was around when we we're 1-15 under Jimmy. At least I felt like we we're going places with all the young guys.. Now I don't have that feeling. Of course I still wear the Jerseys. Of Course i'll Be in Washington when the Cowboys Play this year.. Just because your a realist doesn't make u a pessimist. :starspin

I have to be honest...Jerry Jones has DRAINED all the optimism out of me...I don't like how he operates....so I have been in "wait and see mode" for a long time.

I don't think the Boys will be able to land a impact fa this year. Any potential impact players will have to come from the draft imo. I'm excited about the potential of Kiffen's 4-3 defense will have on this team. It will exciting to see Kiffen turning Ware and Spencer loose on opposing qbs.

yes, that would be back in the days when fans were ridiculed unmercifully for taking a position that was contrary to the accepted board posture on any given subject.

I can see how diversity would be uncomfortable for some, Fletch.

i just don't have a loser's mentality so i refuse to just assume everyone with more cap space or with the ability to sign the big shiny new free agent is going to be better. we competed at a high level despite multiple injuries last season. if we can stay healthy, and add a few key pieces through the draft i believe we're in great shape.

you have to have that same approach in life. ACT AS IF.....!!!!!!!

I'm in sales so i believe this whole heartedly. "ACT AS IF you are the president of this firm"
"ACT AS IF you have a......" ; )

I wish I shared your optimism. There won't be any FA additions that will be exciting. There's no cap space. So check that off your list. The draft is a crapshoot, and the Boys's history of drafts is mediocre at best.

There are too many teams in the NFC that are much more talented and/or younger than Dallas.

Let's say Dallas gets a FA or two that become starters, and have a draft where they get solid contributions from 3-4 players; does that make them better than SF? Seattle? ATL? Or even Wash?

Their current talent base is old, unproven or has health-concerns. Romo, Witten, Ware, Ratliff, and Austin are all on the downside of their careers. Murray misses almost as many games as he plays. Lee misses too many games. Carter has a checkered injury history.

So the young, talented (pro-bowl caliber) and healthy players consist of Tyrone Smith, Dez Bryant and Brandon Carr (Claiborne doesn't belong in that category yet, but there's hope). A LT, a WR and a CB. Good building blocks, but where' the DL? Teams that win have outstanding OL and DL, and Jerry Jones consistently ignores this or gives it lower priority than he does acquiring flashy perimeter players. Jones isn't alone in this regard, but he's not good at drafting or thinking about long-term ways to build a consistent winner like Pitt, NE, ATL.

There's no way this team contends for anything meaningful next year short of a miracle "get hot and lucky in the playoffs" type season. And I don't see them beating out Wash or NYG in the East to even make the playoffs in the first place. And certainly won't be as good as GB, NO, or the NFC West Runner Up in order to make a Wild Card.

8-8 is about as good as it can get next year.

I dont think you could have really explained that any better. Awesome post!!

Ditto.

To elaborate, the rest of the NFL is passing us by due to mismanagement in the front office, and it's especially evident this off season with the way we're handling the cap situation-- not knowing when to cut bait.

Everyone can see that this team is not on the cusp, yet management act's like we're coming off of the 2007 season rather than 3 straight years of missed playoffs.

Bold moves made this team better in the past. Bold moves are making teams like SF and SEA better now, yet our approach is conservative to downright afraid.

It's only baiting if you intentionally make it out to be.

There is some reason to have optimism. Many of the reasons have been named. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that for the first time in many seasons this team displayed heart....they didn't give up as they kept losing starter after starter.

Not sure it will continue to next year, but if it does, I think they could surprise many of us.

Was this a copy and paste from the beginning of last year. Seems this is a rehash of what you say every year.

How's that 8-8 working out for you, Fla?

I'm not talking about the "miserable" fan. I'm referring to the miserable fan who bashes others for not being miserable.

I know. And that kind of misery loves company so hence the want to make everyone else agree they should be miserable too or marginalize them if they do not.
