Not worrying about the "other man". I am simply evaluating the competition, which is what all teams do, and when I look at it objectively, I see a number of teams that are much more talented than Dallas, and hence have much better mathematical odds of having a winning season next year.
I recognize the talent on this team, and objective analysis doesn't allow me to believe they're able to contend for a super bowl in 2013. 6-10, 8-8, 8-8 the last 3 years combined with a lack of infusion of healthy, young talent is no reason to believe they will suddenly jump to an 11-12 win team. Every team has injuries, and many of the players Dallas lost to injury (Murray, Lee, Carter) have a history of being injured both as Cowboys and in college. And current talent is aging and becoming more prone to long term injury, e.g., Ware, Austin, Ratliff. Older guys take longer to recover, and are less effective playing with minor injuries than younger players. That's the point; the core of the team is mostly aging and/or has a history of injuries. Only Tyron Smith and Brandon Carr don't fit this category. Hopefully Mo Claiborne does as well, but time will tell.
I think you over-estimate the overall talent level, particularly in the trenches and up the middle, which is the most important part of the team. Did you see how bad the offensive line was for a majority of the season? The DL was mediocre at best despite getting good play from Spencer.
Maybe a subset of the upcoming 2013 draft class + Tyrone Crawford, Kyle Wilbur, Matt Johnson, Jeremy Parnell, John Hanna, Phill Costa and Barry Church will alll emerge as very good players in 2013, which is possible. However, there's no on the field evidence to suggest that that group just listed will be the infusion of young talent this team needs to get over the mediocrity hump they've been mired in since 2010 (Crawford and Church have flashed from time to time, but we can't count on them making The Leap without more evidence). And only 1 of those players listed so far are an interior OL -Phil Costa- and if this team needs a talent burst anywhere it's interior OL. My bet would be that Jerry Jones once again ignores this critical area of need. I hope I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong about all of my analysis. The evidence suggests I'm not.
I do love your avatar. Breaking Bad is the best. Show. Ever.
