Deion may have been the single best football player of the modern era. Not only were his abilities as a CB otherworldly, but he was a heck of a return man and played WR as well. He didn't mix it up in the trenches much, but there hasn't been a player like Deion in many, many years. Oh, he played baseball too.

This thread is ridiculous. Anyone want to start an "Is Michael Irvin Over rated Thread"?

Irvin was covered largely by Eric Davis with Tim McDonald over the top in that game. Sanders was manned up on Alvin Harper for most of the game, and then switched to Irvin in the fourth quarter. The 49ers had been burned more by Harper on big plays in the previous games against SF than Irvin, and took their chances in using Sanders to eliminate Harper.

Harper had 1 catch for 15 yards in the game.

dblair the resident no it all looks foolish again.

Well you can wish for that in one hand and......in the other and see which one fills up faster.

Personally I think he was the best cover CB but not best CB. To me it's like having a baseball CF who could track down any ball but couldn't throw for a damn. Best at a position means they do all things the best, not just one or two. Tackling is part of the job, if he doesn't or can't do it, how can he be the best at his position?

His off field ******* attitude and talents on Offense/SP play don't enter into the question.

my 2 cents

I understand your point, but in the NFL today, you have to have corners that can cover. If you break up a pass or intercept a pass, why do you need to tackle?

Let's be honest, corners don't have to devastating tacklers unless they're coming up for run support. But if you have your corners coming up for run support often, then your overall run defense is very good, and you'll be hit for a big play sooner or later.

Corners really don't have to be devastating tacklers anyway. They're usually dragging down receivers or tackling receivers after they get out of their breaks.

I think the talk of Deion's lack of tackling is overrated. He really didn't have to do that very often. But what he did do - which is why corners are drafted high and that is to defend the pass - he did better than anyone who has ever played the game, IMO.

Imagine how much greater he would have been if he had a Jerry Rice work ethic.

Who do you suppose, pray tell, was the best CB then?

In my opinion it was Mike Haynes without a doubt.

I would also take Rod Woodson, Herb Adderley, Mel Renfro, and Dick "Night Train" Lane ahead of Deion but that's just me. Lem Barney and Darrell Green would be on my team ahead of Deion too.

There's absolutely no way I'd ever take Darrell Green ahead of Deion Sanders. He was a good player and played for a long, long time, but he was nowhere near Deion's caliber.

I didn't say that he was a better CB just that I'd have him on my team ahead of Deion.

Me-first players like Deion wouldn't be on my team regardless of how talented they might be. Darrell Green was an outstanding team player and a very good person. He is one of the few Commanders players I ever liked.

Green is 10 times the person Deion is, that's why he would make my team and Deion wouldn't.

Fair enough. Links18's question was about who was better/the best, so I thought you were saying Green was better. And if Deion wouldn't be on your team at all, you could have just said that, because, presumably, any cornerback who isn't "me-first" would be on your team ahead of Deion, no matter how bad they might be.

I answered that one with Mike Haynes.

There were enough great DBs who were team players that I don't have to dig down to the scrubs. :D

I suppose that if it came down to it and there just wasn't anybody worth squat available then I'd be forced to settle for Deion, he just wouldn't be my first choice or even my 8th choice is all.

I played football for a VERY long time and I tend to look at guys I would have wanted on my team. I want guys who have talent but are also team players. Guys who will show up and play hard every time we are on the field, whether it is practice, pre-season, regular season, or the playoffs.

I expect that others will have different criteria than mine and that's a good thing.

This thread started with how Irvin kind of owned Deion. Michael also owned Rod Woodson.

Except I wouldn't one of them. Deion was a great player, but I feel the same and wouldn't want him or his work habbits as an example on my team.

Michael owned a lot of guys, that's why he's in the HoF. The point was that Deion was NOT unbeatable.

You realize we aired the hell out of the ball when Irvin went for those 14 catches right? Didn't really have a choice since we were down so early.

Irvin regularly ate Deion's lunch.

1991 against the Falcons .. .10 catches, 169 yards.
1992 against the Falconss .. 8 catches, 89 yards.
1994 regular season against the 49ers ... 8 catches, 94 yards
1994 playoffs against the 49ers ... 12 catches, 194 yards
