Did you not read UPS?

I don't need to read UPS to understand the past 10 years of product support we have fought w/ HP over.

When they send sales teams to meet w/ us here regarding an RFP on the street, the first thing I warn them about is the piss poor CS relationship w/ have w/ them. It's not even me, it's my peers in other companies and departments saying the same thing.

Needless to say they understand and those meetings usually don't last very long.

But back to my point about Gateway being a top tier corporate product line.

I just dont nor never have seen that.

/shurg. I don't see the point in arguing about it. It's not that important. It's practically a dead company today.

:laugh2: Not meaning to argue, I just wanted to know. I have said some very unfriendly things about Gateway over the years when our standards would come up for review.

This.

My last PC I built cost me less than $1,500. The high end gaming PCs (like AlienWare at the time) were over $3,400 and their performance was below mine.

The markup alone on the high end gaming PCs is enormous. (basically, just like Macs)

I just built one for about a grand that's not top of the line but it still a lot better than I'd gotten if I was buying something built by somebody else.

If you buy a Mac, you're paying for all their advertising and "branding".

I've never been a fan of Gateway either though. They're cheap, and not in a good way. Dells are slightly better, but my last one was poorly laid out and ran really hot and loud.

I'd say go ahead and look for around 1TB in a HD, it shouldn't cost that much more and it ought to last you a while. 2 GB of RAM isn't a ton but it should be enough for your purposes imo. Get something that can upgrade to 4 or 6 GB though.

Look online at TigerDirect and Newegg.

A: he's already said he doesn't need it for games

b: Plenty of games run fine. I spent an extended period using the new iMac to play World of Warcraft.

This is not true.

The parts you purchase come with warranties. You can buy OEM software without paying retail prices.

Gateway used to sell higher end machines, (like Dell's Precision line) but Gateway's appeal was short lived due to them changing that philosophy and allowing their quality to fall off in favor of larger margins.

BP and Conoco isn't the only companies out there. One thing about BP and Conoco, those are old school companies and most old school companies stuck with IBM/NEC since they were really the first big players. A lot of the newer companies did use Gateway. I worked for several of them.

Dell physically copied Gateway's business model.

btw, it's not "all Dell" anymore. HP has made a HUGE comeback in the corporate world. While Dell copied Gateway's original business model, the also started copying the business model that caused Gateway to fail too.

Dell's is getting it's *** handed to them by HP right now in the corporate market. I've even threatened to walk away from them. (I do all the purchasing for my company)

BP at one time used Dell Desktop, IBM laptops and Compaq servers and to this day they still use HP servers

A lot of your mid Tier oil company have gone to HP the hosptial I work in now dropped Dell and went with HP. That stuff changes like you clothes about every 5 years with companies

The problem with building it yourself is that you don't get the benefit of SW licensing and warranty with the actual computer. You would have to buy the licensing aside and load it all yourself. As a rule, the packaged SW that you get when you buy a PC is much cheaper then buying all of those licensing yourself. Now, if you only need a few applications and you know what they are, then maybe you can do that. You have to way it all.

Have you ever called Microsoft support with out a premier account yea you might as well just get the OEM license and use goggle it be a better decision.

Have you ever dealt with Adobe support with out a premiere account once again might as well save money and use Google to look up the issue.

Also if you really want to save money use Open Office it works and does not cost you a dam thing.

Hell I gone more open source on my Home PC's going away from main stream stuffed. Adobe reader pass the software is terrible and bloated and takes to long to open I can go with something like foxit reader have a slimmed down app that works. Creating a pdf if you are a home user there are free version that create them and work better than Adobe

How long did it take Blizzard to port WoW to the Macintosh? Do you really want to get into the gaming that is NOT Macintosh discussion?

Thats really to bad for them. :D Call me crazy but I feel when you make an investment into something like a PC or Mac, that it should do anything and everything available and not have limits. The PC gives you that. Since the Mac is so limited in performance, expandability and the gaming arena, I just wouldn't waste my money on one.

They are however nice for making pretty things and creating movies on. I have a buddy who thats all he uses in his business of fashion and furniture designs.

Dude can create one heck of an orange floral couch thingy on them, but can't hang w/ our clan in COD:MW2 :D

Yes, I have. In fact, you might say that I do that sort of thing for a living, so to speak. Support in the IT industry has seriously degenerated over the past few years because this is the easiest way to cut costs. It operates more like insurance does these days. However, you still have access to documentation that can help you solve the problems and you also have access to new Revs and patches as they are released under your service agreements. OEM, you don't.
