I seems that 3 of the last 5 and maybe 4 (can add KC I guess) of the last 5 SB winners did it on the backs of talent acquired in ways other than the draft. NE, although they do dabble in free agency, even occasionally for big talent, generally thrive on home grown talent.
But using LAR as a template glaring holes can be filled with talent upgrades via FA. There is a proven model out there. Philthy did it too in 2017.
Stephen and crew are trying to emulate the NE Patsies as they are the most consistently successful organization out there since our last SB. Even though I really like McClay the Cowboys talent acquisition department and being able to utilize that talent(coaching) just ain't on par with Belicheat. If NE is a 9 out of 10 then we are a 6.5 out of 10.
Problem I see with building thru the draft is 2-fold . . . Once a drafted players is good they want to bust the bank and there just ain't enough dough to go around (aka: Shultz). Secondly you waste a lot of time and high draft choices trying to develop a player that weakens the team (as they are unproven to start with) and they just never pan out. aka: Connor Williams, Taco, Trystan Hill.
Great coaching can overcome a lot of the above but I think the Cowboys while having good coaches (2021 = 12W-5L) don't have great coaching consistently. Maybe we get lucky and hit a home run but I have no confidence that this front office has enough NFL snap to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
I still love my 2022 Cowboys just like I have previous teams since the very early Tom Landry days.
