Just read this article. I'd rather spend the money of the Dline, but wouldn't be opposed to having a decent receiver. He's better then Twill. Then again that's a lot of receivers to carry on the team, but I'll let the GM worry bout that

I may be in the minority but I'd rather stick with the homegrown. Plus, TWill is a very selfless player, which is necessary of the #2 on this team. With Dez, Witt, Zeke, and Beaz the #2 is really the #5. TWill is a great open space blocker, which is what the #2 does more than anything else on this team.

To bring in this player creates a couple of questions.

1. How is his health. Meaning is he fragile or durable. He has averaged 14.6 games per season over 7 years. Yet only twice in those seven years has he played a full 16 games.
2. What kind of attitude does he bring? Meaning does he see himself as a cog in the machine, or a premier talent and the prima dona attitude that goes with it?
3. At what cost? Dallas has money to spend due to the retirements of Romo and Free. But.....what if Romo needs to come back because of injury. And while that could be a remote possibility, the better the team does, and the lateness of the injury suggest a premium grows as this team comes closer to the prize. Will Maclin's demands on salary have a negative effect on an out if something tragic happens to the catalyst of the offense?

I have no qualms in cutting Butler for a better option. And I would like to stack the offense with skill positions, and keep the pressure on the other team when Dallas has the ball. Surely a highly skilled receiver would be an addition to a potent pass team and have a pronounced positive effect on the Dallas defense. The closer the offense gets to becoming a scoring machine, the more time the young guns on defense have to learning their position while the team is successful.

There is also the added positive if this move would keep him pout of the hands of the NFC East teams hand's.

If you can answer those questions above in a satisfactory manner, then this "appears" to be a no brainer.

It's that very selfless nature of TWill which could be capitalized on. He has security in a contract in his favor to prevent a coup of ousting him.. And surely as this team moves toward post-season success, his desire to hoist a trophy will outweigh his personal goals for short term.

I am torn about this because of not knowing enough about Maclin, as stated above in my first post.

But...this has an aura of a Charles Haley move. If you review, Haley was not gangbusters as far as sacks his first season here. But he inspired a defensive line to excel. Perhaps if this guy brings a skill set of close to a #1 receiver, hem might light a fire under Dez, and TWill, along with Switzer stoking that fire under Beas.

I think the comment in the article about Witten aging is a very good point. We all do not want to see him as a shell of his former self. And I am not suggesting that at this time. But a threat of a deep route opens up and makes easier Witten's lot, as well as the rest of the receiver corps.

I may be talking myself into this, jday. Home grown is great, but an offense that has so many weapons the defense is under constant pressure equates to things like NFC Championships and that elusive Lombardi.

It seems unlikely:
He will get a decent offer somewhere. His base with the Chiefs was 9.75M.
He is 29 years old.
The Cowboys already paid TWill enough to say that they expect him to be a starter.

On the flip side, he's probably better than Dez as a #1 WR. They could dump Dez with his 13M base salary and upgrade for cheaper. Maclin has had to play with far inferior QBs.

Maclin past 3 years:
Rec ..... Yards
44 ….. 536
87 ….. 1,088
85 ….. 1,318

Dez past 3 years:
Rec ..... Yards
50 ….. 796
31 ….. 401
88 ….. 1,320

I agree with you and as you stated that is a lot of WR's to carry so guess what, we won't. In this scenario who do they cut?

And before people jump in and say TWill or Butler, I'm not sure you can do that and let me say why.

TWill and Butler were free agents. What would be the future ramifications for us on trying to sign future FA's if we just cut them without cause, just because someone else came along that maybe better.

I know it's a business and there is no loyalty, but an action like that takes the "no loyalty" to a whole new level. I believe future midrange FA's would be very hasitent to sign with us.

I would love to add Maclin. I thought they would upgrade from TWill but he clearly gave them a bargain deal when he resigned.

Dak's game is about finding the right option every time, just think about Dak lining up with Dez and Maclin on the outside and Beasley and Switzer inside, with TWill rotating in all over. Dak will destroy other teams like a surgeon using a scalpel.

Or think about Dez and Maclin in our 2 WR set, Witten and/or Gathers would be open every time.

Yes sir. TWill gets bagged on a lot around here, but he is one of the better blocking WRs in the NFL and doesn't complain about his limited opportunities, which makes him a perfect fit for this offense. His coaches and teammates love him.

So assuming Dez, TWill, and Beasley's role stays the same, do we honestly think Maclin would be satisfied to take Butler's role and money as the 4th or 5th receiver on this team? Not gong to happen.
