Go look at Buffalo's & Baltimore's WR depth chart, no way he ends up a Cowboy. One of those 2 will pony up the money for him

Maybe so. But before I'd reach any conclusions, I'd want to go look at OverTheCap.com's payroll numbers for both. I'm inclined to think you're right, but that, and again, # of years a team would be willing to guarantee (if any) would come into play as well.

Still, Cowboys with the running game, Maclin knows he'll get limited touches. He would only come if he thinks Cowboys has a chance to sniff a ring.

Um. I just figured we all, including Maclin, think the Cowboys have a chance to sniff a ring. We don't?

Sorry if it's a dense question to ask, but why do you say that? What about "this point in the off-season" makes it irrational? Curious.

T-Will's under contract so the urgency to find a replacement at #2 isn't there. Folks can argue that he'd be a replacement for Butler but it would be square peg round hole. Butler serve's as the #4-5 receiving option (and insurance) in this offense behind Dez, Beasley, Witten and T-Will, and he also comes cheap. I don't think Maclin gets $8-10M per season contract, but I also think he gets a much more lucrative contract than what Butler signed for. So the question becomes do you replace Butler for a much more expensive player and then adjust our offense so that Maclin doesn't become a token receiver?

That's my take at least.

We need a pass rusher (if we're gonna spend, and that should be looked at next year.), not another WR.

Especially one that may cost $5-7 mil AAV, and probably looking for ~3 years.

I'd pass, but that's just me. We have a solid group at WR.

Just looked. BUF has money, but do they have a QB... and assuming a ring is important, are the Bills a legit contender?

Don't see it, though McCoy is reported to be recruiting him.

BAL has a QB who's been to a Super Bowl, and perhaps is considered by some to be a legit contender, but they'd seemingly be too close and would have to carve out some cap room somehow.

That could happen.

Given some time to read and think more about it, I'll go out on a limb and say he'll sign a 2 year deal with someone in the $5m/per range. And, yeah, probably not us, but you won't persuade me that we're not pursuing it.

Again, he's an upgrade over Butler by anyone's measure, and you just don't have many players like him come on the market this close to training camp--I'd agree that we're not desperate, but too, there's little likelihood a talent of his scale on the defensive side of the ball is going to come to the market at this point, either.

I would only do a one year deal with him, if he wants more he can go elsewhere.

No reason to let that money just sit there this year when we are trying to get a ring. There is just no pass rushers available right now to sign, so why not make a strength even stronger.

Agreed, but it would have to be performance-based, on top of the one year, for me. Doubt he does that, but who knows. This pushes Butler to the six spot, virtually (and we don't even know if we're rolling with six).

Agreed on no pass rushers available, Freeze, that's why I mentioned next year, and would use whatever rollover from the CAP towards that.

Well I know we probably won't get him for that, but oh well, move on.

At least kick the tires.

Sounds high to me. Very. There simply isn't enough cap space for most teams who are crying for WRs, and thus isn't enough competition to drive the price that high, imo, particularly for a guy with some injury history.

Not to be disregarded, too, is how many years and how much guaranteed a prospective team would offer. His age makes that even more of a factor than it would have been when he originally signed with KC.

He'll sign a 2 year 15 million dollar deal...More than 5 million to sign....book it.

Whose he gonna replace? Lucky?
If, if, we signed him, he'd probably be slotted in between TWill and Bease in the depth chart (so, number 3).

Butler then would slide all the way down to sixth to fight for the potential last slot.

Lucky ain't making the team. The 6th slot (again, if we have one), under a Maclin scenario, would probably be between Brice, Brown, and Jones, imo.

Not to disparage anyone, but practically from the time Butler signed, it's been widely conjectured that his roster slot is extremely tentative because there's so little incentive for the Cowboys to keep him if the right receiver became available.

One could make the case that this very situation is that very situation.

Again, I'm not one who thinks we'll pursue it as hard as others... BAL does seem to stand out, as someone else noted... but competition is likely to be very limited, and so that tends to put a real damper on the auction price. No one wants to overpay, especially if they're already close to the cap. Assuming he's ring-conscious, I think we're part of the mix.

It seems unlikely:
He will get a decent offer somewhere. His base with the Chiefs was 9.75M.
He is 29 years old.
The Cowboys already paid TWill enough to say that they expect him to be a starter.

On the flip side, he's probably better than Dez as a #1 WR. They could dump Dez with his 13M base salary and upgrade for cheaper. Maclin has had to play with far inferior QBs.

Maclin past 3 years:
Rec ..... Yards
44 ….. 536
87 ….. 1,088
85 ….. 1,318

Dez past 3 years:
Rec ..... Yards
50 ….. 796
31 ….. 401
88 ….. 1,320
Now, tally their TDs............................
