That’s always the best measurement of a HC or any Mgmt or leadership. Are we in a better place than when you arrived?

There’s probably an argument to be made for both sides .

When MM came in most fans felt anything would be an improvement from Garrett. And an experienced proven SB winner was definitely what many ordered or had hoped for .

In many ways we are in a better place . 3 straight 12 win seasons. A couple division titles and first time since 90’s 3 consecutive playoff appearances. But only 1 playoff win and still no championship game appearances .

It appears we have built an overall better or more talented team. But the disappointment and frustration in playoffs continues.

So, what is your take. Are we in a better place with McCarthy than 4 years ago?
yes. i think Big Mac has done a good job getting our team in the playoffs. we laid and egg due to defense getting over whelmed and we are not a play from behind team. we do our best when we play from a head can mix it up ok offense and let the defense pin their ears back and rush the QB. are we lacking in running the ball. yes. will that come yes. are we lacking at stopping the run. yes that will come with new talent. this FO and Big Mac have worked well to build this team. they just need to have cards fall right to push forward in off season like every team.

Different era. Additionally, McCarthy was handed a playoff team. Landry wasn't.

I'll even list 3 more ways McCarthy failed just last year alone - Deuce, Lumpke and Mazi. The level of mismanagement of those 3 players is criminal. Bottom line is McCarthy should have been fired. The safe bet is nothing will be different this year and everyone will be calling for his head again next January.
Ohhhhh, you are spouting the truth!!!!!!!!!!

Deuce: Small quick RB, needs the ball in space to be effective. Sooooooooooooo, we run him into the LOS?
Mazi: Huge NT, so we make him lose weight and try to play him out of position?
Luepke: We draft a power RB. We needed a power RB all season, and gave him no carries?

This was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen and it just makes no sense whatsoever.

Yep, so true.
And I'll pile on...
McFraud and his cronies Solari and Schott should be sued for coaching malpractice based on that failed run game.
Philosophy/identity, scheme, optimizing personnel and execution.

The 3 of 'em couldn't gameplan a consistently effective run game if their lives depended on it.
Run the ball and rest the defense my ***.
Pathetic.

Can we even run the ball w/o the RB's getting met 6 yds deep in the backfield as soon as they take the handoff?

I swear man. It was so weird because we had 3 all pro linemen but none of em run blocked worth a crap last year.
And then you delve a little further and learn some of the teaching/techniques that Solari was sharing like letting DEs go intentionally unblocked and you can't do anything but shake your head at the coaching incompetence.

He was? Hum... handed a playoff team... who knew? Could have sworn they were 8-8 in 2nd place. But, maybe they were in the playoff's and I just don't remember...

3 more ways? It's obvious anyone can "find things" to hang their entire opinion on, right? Might want to consider adjusting to the "right things".

So, positional coaches, coordinators and the head coach mismanaged 3 players to a criminal extent. Wow. Who knew without being in the meetings, on the practice field, or knowing what plays are called during a game - but maybe, just maybe, the players aren't good enough.

It's like the Principal of a school being responsible for the results of the janitor... Yes, he/she is accountable, but not responsible.

So, who is accountable and responsible for player aquisiton?

Therein lies the answer...

To Garrett’s credit the drafts begun to be better in 2011 but it took too long to retool or rebuild not making playoffs again until 2014. And that core team at least offensively with Romo , Murray and Dez never took the field again. Basically had to retool again in 2016 after the collapse in 2015 when Romo went down. Garrett basically had a rebuild and a retool in his 9 full seasons.
So Garrett was basically rebuilding the team for 9 freaking years ????

Dam bro, I have never seen anybody ever go to the lengths you do to defend Garrett, like ever.

Even Hostile (who got laughed off this board some time ago for his Garrett love) was not as hard core as you are in defending Clappy...............At this point I have to assume you are related to him, only thing that makes sense.

No just rebuilding the early years from 2011-2013. 2014 was the fruition of that as we went to 3 Divisional Round appearances in 5 years. And I’d argue was closer on more than one occasion to finally kicking down that championship appearance door than any other HC this era.

The fact he was pursued while OC to become HC’s elsewhere supported at the time was an upcoming product. Even earning Coach of the year honors. Something only Landry and Jimmy have accomplished as Cowboys HC. And because of his longevity provided by Jethro became the Cowboys 2nd most winningest HC in team history. These are all facts .

I created a narrative early on that Garrett was our “ greatest puppet” this era which didn’t mean he was a great coach which I have agreed with many of his coaching flaws. At the time I didn’t feel our owner was ever going to allow a coach( even if he was more qualified and experienced) to lead our team without his meddling , interference and undermining. I’m not sure that I wasn’t closer to reality than some want to admit. Even now.

Early on given my feelings that Garrett might be about as much as we could hope for under our dysfunctional ownership in which I’d basically given up all hope Jethro would ever relinquish his control I decided Jason being an ex Cowboy player was someone I could get behind.

He took so much vitriol from the lynch mob I enjoyed taking them on. I felt Jason being a ex Cowboy brought some dignity and class to an organization which had very little at the time. The fact he had no experience or proven record in coaching but still has at least to this point had as much success in the playoffs as any other HC this era still stands.

I was a big fan rooting for his success when I didn’t have much else to root for. Much of my support was exerting my deeply frustrated mindset with our owner . And if we were going to be stuck , Garrett was someone I’d be willing to be stuck with.

I’ve stated this many times and have maintained throughout. Some want to label it or attempt to discredit me personally but it is what it is. I’ll always stand by it.

Props to you brother for staying true to your convictions. I agree that the Garrett tenure was not nearly the abject disaster it has been made out to be by some. My biggest issue with Garrett was that he was often too slow making in game adjustments. Not that he would not make them, but he was not as good at it as I would have liked. Like you I appreciated that he was an ex-Cowboys player and an intellectual sort. I felt like he had a chance to enjoy a Landry-like length of tenure and would eventually develop into a great head coach. I stood right beside you rooting for him to have great success because that would mean great success for the Cowboys. In the end he just took too long to get there. But winning the division and getting to the playoffs in 3 times in 5 years should not be ignored. But neither can the end of the season failure in 2019. I never forgave him for running Dak out there on ZERO practice owing to the injuries at Philly with the division on the line. Then having Boy Genius call like 50 pass players to 16 runs!! When your QB had not thrown the ball ALL WEEK! ***!?!?! 8 of their first 10 plays that day were passes. EIGHT!!! A 4 to 1 pass/run ratio with your QB playing on a bum shoulder. Jerry should have fired both Garrett and Moore before they got back on the plane that day.

Garrett sucked. That's why he joins Campo as the only Cowboys coach who only was a HC here and no other place. (Landry excepted for very obvious reasons.)

You saw what a disaster of even an OC he was at the Giants. And now he's a punchline as a studio host and analyst at NBC.

The "Next Landry" was always a fraud and a poser who fooled people because of his glory days ties, Princeton degree, being "young and thin" and having a good smile. Shame so many people are apparently still buying it.

Man I could write a novel in response to this.

I always rooted hard for him to succeed, figuring he was the best we were going to do given the front office structure…and I don’t know if that wasn’t true.

For the save of brevity….I would say my biggest problem with Garrett was that he wanted to instill old school values and schemes at a time when the game and the players were changing/evolving in a big way.

He didn’t seem to have many friends around the league and probably had a tougher time hiring staff than we know about, so we ended up with coordinators like Marinelli and Linehan.

He absolutely never had the respect of the locker room. Jerry hired him so he himself could be the clear undisputed boss and face of the team, and every player knew it.

On paper the Cowboys have looked like world beaters, unfortunately the Boys seem to come up short BIGTIME when they face better competition. The Cowboys don't like getting bullied and when that happens, they don't know how to respond and I believe that falls back on the coaching staff.

For the record the Cowboys under this dysfunctional ownership has been basically a Dead-End for all of our HC’s except Jimmy and Gailey (which took him about 10 years to rebound after a stint at Ga Tech and a couple more OC stints ) which ended in Buffalo after a brief tenure.

Bottomline is Switzer, Campo, Parcells , Phillips and Garrett so far haven’t been offered another NFL HC position. Garrett was offered the HC position at Atlanta and Baltimore while he was our OC which he turned down.

Amazingly Garrett was the least qualified and or experienced Cowboys HC but beyond his obvious coaching flaws still put up numbers comparable with other Cowboys HC’s this era.

I’m not sure why he isn’t more recognized for his efforts despite his qualifications. He still remains one of only 3 Cowboys HC’s To earn Coach Of The Year( Landry and Jimmy). And currently is 2nd only to Landry in franchise wins. Not to mention only Cowboys HC to lead Cowboys this era to 3 Divisional Round playoff games .

Garrett was basically a Dez catch that wasn’t and a miraculous 3rd and 20 by Rodgers from earning our 1st births in NFC Championship games since the 90’s. How much different this era might have been if either of those games were wins. I’d imagine the narrative would be much different.

It was a total dysfunctional situation going back to how Jethro undermined Wade hiring Jason first calling him the future of the Dallas Cowboys. Wade was set up for failure.

But Jason deserves more credit for helping to develop Romo in 2007 and beyond and possibly for helping to develop Prescott. Jason did have the respect of Romo. They hung out together.

But the undermining, mingling of Jethro was at its height with Garrett. Jethro felt having a lesser qualified and experienced HC ( greatest puppet as I coined him) provided Jethro the opportunity to gain more credit if we had success and why he gave him more time than Jason arguably deserved.

To give Jethro credit this experiment came very close to succeeding coming within a couple dramatic plays of kicking down championship game door which if had happened might have cemented Garrett to an even longer tenure.

Only because he was here a decade. And he was only here a decade because he was Jerry's pet project, the son of a man Jerry thought was a loyal employee. Not because of merit.

Basically, Jerry runs his businesses as a family business, and Garrett was the closest thing to a family member he could get at head coach. That's why he said Garrett was practically in the family portrait.

But I guess the rest of the league is just missing out by not hiring this genius who's been available for a couple of years. If you love wasting a decade of football life on a lousy coach with a good facade, Jason's your man.

He won a lot of football games for us.

He never had an elite DC.

Romo got hurt.

Dez got hurt.

Looking back, the 2020 disaster likely doesn’t happen with Jason.
