I find this ironic and condescending, coming from a guy and a country who, every 4 years, criticizes "America" for not "getting" soccer......

It's a pattern. Be it Pele. The World Cup. Womens Olympic Soccer. David Beckham................whatever. We get pummled because we just "don't get" what the rest of "the world" gets.

All we hear about, it that "fuutball" or soccer as it is rightfully called, is the worlds "most popular sport". And, that the U.S. is "out of touch" because we don't embrace it.

The reason why Soccer is the "worlds most popular sport", is because 4/5ths of the world is "turd-world-country", and all you need is a foot and a coconut to play "fuutball".

In the U.S., we don't play Third World sports. In the U.S., yeah, our arrogance (as you put it) requires spending some money on our kids to be able to compete. Any gorilla can play soccer, because the total equipment required is feet and a rock..............

Do yourself a favor........don't question that which you know not of. NFL Football is a brand that Italy and Brazil and France and Iran could never understand. Because those countries are still trying to understand running water and electricity. The NFL is LIGHT-YEARS beyond what your average "soccer" country will ever grasp.

When you come up with a game that requires helmets and physical protection from bodily harm, come back and post. 'Till then, go play cricket and soccer.....................
C'mon man.

The quoted post is garbage... but just to show you a small amount of the arrogance and ignorance that is in it...look at the bolded text...than think Romans, aqueducts, baths.....and Marconi is called the father of radio hard to do without electricity... of course I just used the first country off the list...the others have equal claim to an understanding of how did he put it running water and electricity...

Never been out of the USA before have you Lewpac

My ancestors on my mother's side came from Scotland. They were the Lockharts (Originally spelled Loccard) apparently Sir Simeon carried the key to the cask that carried King Bruce's heart to the crusades. My great great Uncle Samuel Lockhart was the first sheriff of Llano County, Texas were I was born. Since this a football forum. I love me someDallas Cowboys

noone disputes that the winner of the World Cup is the World Champion. and noone should dispute the winner of the Super Bowl is the World Champion of Pro football. There isn't a country on earth that can put forth a team of NFL level quality as of yet. And it is played internationally. Also, If it isn't a world championship please tell me why everyone on the planet watches it. It is a tad condescending to suggest it isn't a world championship. I think alot of the planet recognizes American football for the outstanding sport it is, and the rest don't get it- but all are intrigued by the balance of power, bravery, speed and skill required to play it.

this must be the fifth time i've said this at least. the nfl is undoubtedly the strongest competition on earth when it comes to american football. i doubt you would find anyone who would argue that point. the point i am making is that if its not an international competition then how can you be the world champions? you may very well be the best in the world but you cant lay claim to the title of world champions.
also as i have said several times this isn't meant as a dig at american football, its a sport i love or i wouldn't sit up till 4 in the morning watching the cowboys get destroyed by the eagles hoping that they're going to produce a miracle turnaround then have to get out my bed two and a half hours later to go to work for a twelve and a half hour shift.
also the vast majority of folk over here are not intrigued "by the balance of power, bravery, speed and skill required to play it" it is definately a growing sport here but it is still very much a minority sport, much like my kind of football is there. hopefully though it will continue to grow as it has here in the last few years

again mate im scottish, certainly not british.

Yes, I realize that, but so what? You're still countrymen. You're still part of the Crown. You both send reps to Parliament. You're two peas in a pod.

in relevance to this thread i would question why soccer is then the biggest sport in south america as the english with the exception of the falkland islands never made any impact on that continent.

Same reason US movies and television programs are popular the world over: it's a cheap form of entertainment. Soccer will always be popular with the poverty crowd because one solitary soccer ball (even a crappy one) means you're in business.

i'm also going to go out on a limb and say that quote might not be entirely serious or accurate

Well, see for yourself. You'll be heartened to discover that plenty of others think like you.

scotland is a seperate country historically, we are represented independently in all major sporting events outside the olympics and have our own parliament. at every available opportunity i vote for independence from britain so no i don't consider myself to be british. if you must no i feel that the scots along with the welsh and irish have been suppressed by the english for centuries and we are the first victims of the imperialism that was mentioned in the first post concerning the bbc but this doesn't really seem the place to get into that kind of argument.

you're not honestly telling me that only poor people like football? the bare necessities for a game of american football are the same - a ball.

the bbc thread, again mate i love watching nfl - i was working 8 am monday morning the game didn't finish here till 3:30 but i recorded it on the bbc and watched it monday night. one of the few things they've shown this year that has justified my licence fee

ps tell me the link to the world series rumour killer isn't true, i always enjoyed that story about the new york world sponsoring the first five years or whatever

Of course not. You referenced South America, not me. It's hardly controversial to note that in poorer regions of the world, soccer maintains a huge advantage over traditional US sports due to equipment issues alone.

LOL. Only if you're talking about touch or flag football.

You didn't take the day off due to all that snow?? Sucker. :) Maybe Scotland didn't get buried like your neighbors to the south.

That was news to me as well. Snopes rarely steers me wrong.

If an international competition doesn't include teams from all countries, does it have a right to claim it's a world championship? Should it be a regional championship? Or a championship of qualifying teams, some of whom happen to be international? It's the level of competition that signifies the championship, and not the geography. If the winning team is the best in the world, then they're world champions. Yes, you can start your own league and be the world champion of that if you care to. We'd all be very happy for you over here.

And, really, at least in the States, the Superbowl isn't marketed as a world championship game. You may hear the winning team referred to as world champions, but it's not like that has any significance. Being the Superbowl champion is sufficient. The game might be marketed differently overseas. If it is, they're probably trying to leverage the popularity of the World Cup to generate more interest.

If that's the case why is Michael Irvin not playing soccer ?

Have you ever wonder where players like Michael Irvin came from ????
I heard he eat his cereal before games with water to remember his childhood struggles. A lot players in the NFL come from low income families and you are here talking about poverty like the NFL is only played by Jerry Jones and Company.

please dont take this the wrong way guys, from my previous posts and the fact i'm on this board you hopefully know i love your sport (still prefer proper football or soccer as you call it) Also while i'll be honest and say i never really had any desire to visit your country i holidayed in texas last summer and absolutely loved the place and now can't wait to go back. but why do they insist on calling it world champions in competitions that only involve american teams? its only one country that compete! sorry it just bugs me, if me and my brother invented a sport i wouldn't call myself the scottish champion for beating him. asides from that i enjoyed the superbowl, albeit a day late because it never finished till half 3 am here monday morning and i'm not staying up that late when i'm working if the cowboys aren't involved. was out my seat and woke my girlfriend when larry scored late in the 4th, gutted at the finish. anyway back to the beer (someone have a shinerbock for me, can't get it over here) :beer2:

Put together your best team and let them play the Steelers. Bet the Steelers win. Put together your best team and have them play the Lions. I would still put money on the Lions.

Oh, and where are you from?

Some pretty ignorant statements being made in this thread.

Almost as bad as some of the ones made in the Political Zone.
