did you see the thread title?

Yes we did. Next time, try some honey instead of vinegar. You might get better feedback.

thats what i mean, not arguing they're the best in the world but my point is you cant claim to be the world champions if you haven't competed against international oppostition. that may very well just be my opinion though

but never once has any international competition challenged that title. Until someone does you have to consider them world champs.

Honestly i feel the same way about the dude you mentioned who steps on fish, if he wants to call him self world champ i seriously wouldn't object, if someone did then game on

im not saying all americans are arrogant, far from it. as i said i was there in the summer and loved it, my girlfriends folks live there and have never been happier. what i did say was that i and most folk outside the u.s. find it arrogant to proclaim the american champions of a sport as the world champions. the reason i brought the thread title back into it was that the guy decided to respond by saying the reason was that "america rules the world" i would say that thats a fairly arrogant statement. i will say that i possibly worded my initial post, particularly the title, rather provocatively but as i said i have had a few beers. if anyone was annoyed and took my stance as anti-american (i feel i made an effort not to come accross that way) then i apologise

World champion of American football literally means "best American football team in the world." Can you look around the world and identify a team that is better at American football than the Pittsburgh Steelers?

If not, the claim of "world champion" is perfectly valid. It's not arrogance. It's simply the truth. And the **** would agree.:D

do i win back popularity if i answer that with the dallas cowboys? :D

in all seriousness though its not an argument that there are better teams out there than there are in america its just the fact that it isn't a world championship. much the same as floyd mayweather being the self proclaimed best pound for pound fighter in the world. he may very well be but there is no regimented way to actually prove it whether everyone agrees/knows or not.

and i bow before the **** as any self respecting man should. i take it you've heard his version of pulp - "common people"?

A question mark after "arrogance" would have been advisable.

You mean like coming to this forum and asking us why we call it the world championship?

whats arrogant about that? as i've said several times if you've read my comments on the thread i'm not saying the superbowl winners aren't the best team in the world but they don't compete in an international competition. how can you win a world championship if you only compete within one country? thats the only point i was making, as i said sorry if i worded it poorly but i've had a few and wasn't out to cause offence

From a Beeb message board:

With the US being as big as it is, why do they need or want other countries to play the sports they invented ?

The fact that Soccer, Rugby and Cricket are popular elsewhere in the world has more to do with our age old imperialist habit of invading countries and forcing the natives to play our crappy pastimes.

again mate im scottish, certainly not british. you don't need to tell me about english/british imperialism but thats a subject for an entirely different forum. in relevance to this thread i would question why soccer is then the biggest sport in south america as the english with the exception of the falkland islands never made any impact on that continent.
once again i love american football, if you check my posts im not here winding you up. i am a cowboys fan, not to the same extent as a lot of you guys but i have my top and i sit up till about 4 am watching the games on jumpy feeds online so i feel i have a degree of legitamacy.

i'm also going to go out on a limb and say that quote might not be entirely serious or accurate
