please dont take this the wrong way guys, from my previous posts and the fact i'm on this board you hopefully know i love your sport (still prefer proper football or soccer as you call it) Also while i'll be honest and say i never really had any desire to visit your country i holidayed in texas last summer and absolutely loved the place and now can't wait to go back. but why do they insist on calling it world champions in competitions that only involve american teams? its only one country that compete! sorry it just bugs me, if me and my brother invented a sport i wouldn't call myself the scottish champion for beating him. asides from that i enjoyed the superbowl, albeit a day late because it never finished till half 3 am here monday morning and i'm not staying up that late when i'm working if the cowboys aren't involved. was out my seat and woke my girlfriend when larry scored late in the 4th, gutted at the finish. anyway back to the beer (someone have a shinerbock for me, can't get it over here) :beer2:

We can do it because we, Americans, are number one and the other guys suck.:D

just joking...some radio station used to use that line and thought it was funny.

Actually its played in Canada too, tad bit different field etc. but still the same game.

They say the same thing about NBA, but they aren't playing against World teams. So yeah, for US, it is the World :D And I am immigrant myself, I used to wonder about that initially, but I have fully embraced that concept :p:

They are the world champions. I'm pretty sure every player isn't from America.

Even though the Super Bowl only involves American teams, it's still a contest between the best such teams in the world.

If a particular sport was specific to Scotland and you were victorious in a championship game of that sport, you would be perfectly justified in deeming yourself the world champion.

And I agree wholeheartedly about Shiner Bock. Even though I'm not much of a beer drinker, I like Shiner Bock quite a bit.

I dare you to find a non US pro football team that can beat even the Lions not to mention the SB champs

Right. There is no doubt that there is no other country that could put together a American Football team and have them be competitive with the NFL teams. So... since we all know there isn't a team in any country that could beat the Steelers (or any other NFL team for that matter) at American Football... we call them the world champs.

The winners of the SB are world champions because the NFL is where the highest levels of grid iron football are played.

Grid iron football is now played on 6 out of 7 continents.

The SB is regularly the most watched sporting event in the world each year.

The SB is also a title that started as the champs of two professional leagues playing each other.

If you could logically argue why a club team in London playing grid iron football (there are such clubs) wouldn't get destroyed in humiliating fashion by even the worst NFL teams then you might have point about debating the world championship status.

Another analogy is Sumo wrestling. It pretty mush is only played in Japan, but nobody doubts the world champ status of a yokozuna.

i'd be tempted to disagree with your best teams in the world comment and cite my disagreement with the village on the coast at the scottish english border holding the world flounder footing championships (go in the sea and whoever cathes the biggest flounder - kind of flat fish - by standing on it wins, in fairness its been the same guy the last 3 years so there must be some sort of skill involved - god knows what it is right enough) as its only a village in scotland therefore not an international event but i can't bring myself to disagree with someone who has "the ****" as their sig.

ps does this mean if i break my brothers nose next time he annoys me i get to claim im a world champion at elbowing and therefore cant be prosecuted?

also on the beer front try and track yourself down some lowenbrau or arran blonde

Top European teams would even be able to play a semi decent college team close.
A couple of years ago the US had a National team of sorts full of players no one has ever heard of or will ever hear of tour Europe playing some of the best teams here and absolutely destroying them

If it makes you feel better, you can call your soccer stuff "World champions of soccer."

Because no one really cares here to put up an argument over "OMG, how can they be called world champions of soccer?" - Its still soccer.

Would anyone like a spot of tea?

i'm scottish not english, i find that extremely offensive!!!!

if you had said would anyone like a spot of beer or whisky i would not have objected :D

in general response to the replies i'm not saying for a second that if you took the best players outwith america they would be able to beat the lions what i am saying is that its hardly a world championship if its only contested by american teams. its like long distance running at the olympics. we all know its going to be an ethiopan or kenyan that wins it but at least everyone else is represented. i love the nfl, outwith celtic games or anything involving the scottish national team its the only sport capable of getting me out my seat but it is a national championship.

in fairness in "soccer" the world cup which crowns the world champions is a competition between 32 countries. these 32 countries qualify from the 208 member countries. again im not trying to be an arse but i feel that is a more legitimate claim to the title of world champions. and yes the U.S. have been in it for the last few tournaments, which are held every four years. scotland on the other hand haven't qualified since '98.
also "my soccer stuff" is the most popular sport on the planet

Huh. Didn't know we entered those thingies.

I hope our players are as good of actors as they are over in Europe!

And congrats to soccer being popular all over the world. It should be. The start up costs to playing soccer is a lot less, than say, basketball or football.

It's not, no matter how much that offends you, the best Football team in the world right now is the Steelers.
Proving that by beating up some non US team would just be a formality, everyone knows it. Which is why no one has ever challenge the legitimacy of the SB winner being world champs
