Al Singleton is no longer here and his spot would be well filled by a guy like Edwards. Veteran leadership for what is still a very young unit and also a guy that can help everyone on defense transition to Wades scheme.

The age is an obvious concern but a moderate 2 year contract sounds about right especially if he can provide insurance against James/Burnett who I am not exactly sold on.
Singleton played OLB. Edwards isn't an OLB. I guess you were just referring to the "veteran role."

At his age and position (I doubt many 4-3 teams will be interested), he might not be worth as much as he thinks he is. I would consider him in a one or two year deal with a decent singing bonus, a good salary and some incentives.

Bradie James scares me.

He may scare you but there is too much money invested to just dump the guy.

Snatched my thought. Wouldn't signing Edwards mean that the Cowboys don't have faith in Ayodele and/or James or have given up on Carpenter and Burnett? As much as I like the player, he doesn't fit a need. IMO sign a top OG that fits the Cowboys scheme (whatever that maybe for the coming season), add another high level OL to push for starting OG, C or OT, decide whether Henry will continue as CB or be moved to FS (if being moved, draft a top level CB in either the low 1st or high 2nd rd to replace him) and determine whether J.Jones is fit for the starting RB position.

The pieces for the 3-4 LB positions are in place for the most part. They just need to be refined.

Well said.

Hell we have this supposed 3-4 "guru" here let's see what the heck he can do with what we have.

I'll take Dielman and Steinbach at Guard right now in Free Agency. I am dead serious too.

Kick Rivera to the curb and Kosier to the bench.

With Gurode at Center Romo's wall would be secure up the middle and the running game would benefit.[/quote]

Great minds think alike. I been convinced we need to go this way since the Seattle loss.

We need to acquire two quality OG's.
I like Adams, Columbo and Mcquistan at OT. I like Gurode at OC.
You can argue/see all 4 players improving this year.

Kosier and Proctor would make excellent back-ups.

I know it sounds like overkill, but I see it as necessary.

If we just did this and didn't sign another significant FA, I'd be thrilled.

Says the guy who wants to sit Kosier's new contract on the bench and sign the two most expensive FA Guards. ;)

Don't make me start suggesting kickers.

Because most don't look at this from the business aspect... I do. And to sign a 33yo ILB to mega bucks to replace the young ILB you just gave mega bucks too isn't smart business CONSIDERING that the young ILB did play well in 2005 and is now under the tutelage of a guy that may be able to more out of him.

PLUS I heard a tid-bit yesterday about moving James out of the Nickel because he wore down last year-- I'm wondering how much fatigue played in his drop-off from 2005 to 2006. Maybe more than what anyone realizes.

But the bottom line is that I don't see us benching James and signing Edwards-- no way, no how.

If Burnett can improve his tackling, he sort of reminds me of Edwards. Why sign a big dollar contract for a player you already have?

They aren't replacing Kosier-- you can wipe that silly thought right out of your head.

And at some point we need to see if Bill Parcells belief in Proctor was deserved.

You can't 'buy' a friggin championship. At some point you need to grow from within.

I would rather see that than dump more money into a 33 year-old whiner.

As jim-dandy as it sounds to have the absolute BEST at every position the financial constraints in doing so make it a fool's game.

I think we've done a great job of growing our talent within.

If we have the cap space...which we do... and there is holes then why wouldnt you fill them in with proven talent?

We are a playoff team that could easily be sitting in the Superbowl with just a couple of pieces.

Don't know if this was posted in this thread, but...

Donnie Edwards Contract: 5-Year deal worth 18.75M thru the 2007-2008 season signed on 4/24/02- + he is guaranteed 5.75M over the first two years of the deal- + he receives a 1.5M signing bonus, of which 300K is paid in 2002- + he receives base salaries of 525K in 2002, 975K in 2003, 2.85M in 2004, 3M in 2005, 3.55M in 2006 and 4.825M in 2007- + in 2003, he is guaranteed 4.25M in total payment and has a 4.65M cap value in 2004- + he earned $703,300 in bonuses in 2004 (NFLPA Team Co-Rep.

I think the 2007 deal was an option. So, he thinks he is worth more than $5M a year. He has good numbers, but he will be 34 when the season starts. I wouldn't give him a long term deal, and not above the $5M he wants. Next!

The Commanders have had that point-of-view for a few seasons now-- And how's that worked out?

The bottom line is if you have a young guy (James) that has shown the ability to play this game at a high level and was compensated a great amount to continue doing so-- but slipped for one reason or another-- then I think you better give the young guy another opportunity.

CB, Guard, NT, Yeah those are all positions where I would suggest investing money into for a younger player because it seems that our depth isn't starting material or hasn't proven to be starting material...

And I won't even get into the age issue on Edwards which totally turns me off.

Exactly "Next".

Maybe Catch17 can invest his money into Edwards and have Edwards play on the local semi-pro team.
