The Commanders have had that point-of-view for a few seasons now-- And how's that worked out?

The bottom line is if you have a young guy (James) that has shown the ability to play this game at a high level and was compensated a great amount to continue doing so-- but slipped for one reason or another-- then I think you better give the young guy another opportunity.

CB, Guard, NT, Yeah those are all positions where I would suggest investing money into for a younger player because it seems that our depth isn't starting material or hasn't proven to be starting material...

And I won't even get into the age issue on Edwards which totally turns me off.

The Commanders have done that at every position for the past 5 years and they keep signing a lot of players.

So I know it wouldnt hurt us at all to do that with even 1 guy and thats not even what im suggesting.

Like I said if hes asking for an insane price then I wouldnt do it.

But Donnie Edwards is a major upgrade to this defense and helps us in a lot of ways.

We're not just bringing in a really good player, we are bringing in a really good player who can help guys on the field in this defense.

Also isnt the cap supposed to become a lot softer in a couple years?

Investing in 33 year-olds isn't cool.

ARE YOU GUYS CONCERNED WITH FA?

I keep hearing about all this money out there.
How the numbers for these guys could get out of hand.

Were talikng about Deilman, Steinbach and Edwards, while we have a couple of KEY guys about to hit FA ourselves.

Columbo and Gurode.
These players could easily attract larger contracts than they deserve.
Both guys had break-out years.
Won and held starting positions for the first time.
Both players are young.
Both players have a pedigree.
Columbo was a 1st RD PK and Gurode was a 2nd RD PK.

I like both guys. I want them back as most here do.
I'm just concerned if they hit FA they get some rediculous offers.

What type offers do you guys see them getting?
Has there been talk of locking them up before FA.

It isnt the end all either. Especially when they are still playing at an extremely high level and know the defense well enough to help other guys who are trying to become accustomed to it.

The D is too young as of now they need a real veteran presence to help along everyone and still be awesome himself.

Edwards would be an excellent pick up

He may scare you but there is too much money invested to just dump the guy.

I'm not suggesting we dump the guy. Not yet, just looking into getting some insurance. My point is that Edwards may not get on the open market what he is hoping to get. Now if someone offers him a big wad with a big signing bonus, then by all means we can't compete with that. But I would look into him if he's not snatched up right away. I would have never thought of LB as a need area in FA this year, but sometimes you have to be flexible. One of our big problems at the end of the year was LB's in coverage especially 56. I wouldn't mind another option.

I also hope we don't have to dump him, but if we did have to dump him, we could hack it financially. He signed 5 year 20 million dollar deal with 8 mill up front. If he were a back up next year, then we might have to consider cutting him, which would result in a cap hit of approx. 4.8 million, which is probably a little more than his salary, but wouldn't be terrible.

I've been hoping for Eric Steinbach. The BEngals were SO good to his side last year.

Edwards....eh. He'd be good, in that he's familiar with the defense, but LB isn't a priority. I think we'll see alot out of the LBs we do have here. Ellis, if he comes back, may move back down to the DE spot.

ILB is definitely a priority

I agree only because this guy will want a huge contract and it appears he has been complaining about the contract he has had in SD.

We don't need to put big money into aging players...we should have learned that by now.

Now...If he would come for a small price, no problem because we don't take much of a chance...but chances are he will want a big contract and I say we pass on that idea.

I wouldn't be opposed to something large, yet incentive-laden

Edwards would be a Great hire even though he is getting up there in years. the guy every time i watch him play he was just makes a game changing play every time. whether its a int, FF, FR, or just tackle the offensive player short of the 1st. he's the type of player that would fit with any team

That depends on alot of things. Is Carpenter an ILB? Is Ellis even a LB anymore if he comes back? He could play DE in Wade's system. Could we get 2005 Bradie James back? Can Burnett play OLB consistently? We have a plethora of LBs - and if they work out, we don't need any mroe starters.

No. ILB might be a priority, if Carpenter doesn't move inside, Bradie stays 2006 Bradie, and we have no OLB so Carpenter has to remain outside. It's not definitely a priority. There are several areas that are of greater need.

Why is Burnett out of the mix?

If I recall correctly, he was playing ILB in the nickel.

Why couldn't he do that again?

I think coaching had more to do with the problems than talent did.

outside of FS, OG, and another pass-rusher, I don't see very many needs, and we're definitely not spending much on a FS

and remember, Carp had to move back outside to be able to get on the field, and Bradie is just too slow
