ARTICLE: Both sides say Edwards won't be returning

Dire situation?
The most pressing free-agent issue remains left guard Kris Dielman. The team has not spoken with Dielman's agent in more than two weeks, and it has been even longer since meaningful dialogue was shared.
Teammates have expressed pessimism regarding the possibility of Dielman staying and have said his loss would be greatly felt.

The market for Dielman will be fierce. Dallas, Miami, Seattle and Cleveland, among others, are expected to bid for his services.
That's great news. If both him and Steinbach hit the market, though, it could lower their price tags a little.

I'll take Dielman and Steinbach at Guard right now in Free Agency. I am dead serious too.

Kick Rivera to the curb and Kosier to the bench.

With Gurode at Center Romo's wall would be secure up the middle and the running game would benefit.

You my friend, are a genius.

I see everyone is ready to "dial 1-800-linebacker".

Guess what folks?

You just dropped a bundle on Brady James.

And my guess is that he becomes one of Phillips attempted reclamation projects before we start dropping more coin on another ILB.

Kosier played far more effectively, and made a much bigger difference than Gurode this year. I think he's in our future big time. We only need one guard. ;)

Might want to look at replacing that center position, completely, though. I wanted us to do it last year with Bentley and move Gurode to Guard, but Bentley wanted Cleveland.

Wishful thinking Hos but it's not going to happen.

Kosier was decent this year... Rivera was not.

Gurode may have worn down as the season went on but the guy was decent.

I don't see any changes happening at center UNLESS we don't resign Gurode.

Same thing here....it is about the money and cap situations IMO.

Also some positions tend to have a better rate of success with age compared to others.

We just need to be wise.

I don't mind him coming in at all and helping the team/defense in transition...the problem would be the money he would want.

Exactly right.

You just can't "spend" your way out of every problem on this team.

People wanted Wade because he knew the 3-4, well let's see his teaching skills in progress with Brady James before we blow big coin on another ILB.

He wasn't a whole lot more than decent all year. Toward the end of the year, I'm not even sure he was at that level. I think we should seriously look at upgrading that position. Gurode, for all his girth and physical advantages over Johnson, didn't help our run game behind him one bit. Kosier made a significant difference on the left side. Center can be upgraded, and it won't take much, unless Wade and Sparano think Gurode is going to make some significant progress.

I hope that Phillips' hire increases our chances of signing Dielman.

Edwards is a fine linebacker, but there are too many factors against signing him.

1) He'll want big money. That's why he's out of San Diego

2) He's getting up in age

3) The Cowboys have invested heavily in linebackers already

They have Ayodele and James making big money and Burnett in the mix along with Fowler

I have a suspicion that Phillips will try to move Ayodele outside some as well. And I think Burnett gets a bigger role in the new defense too.

I could see Edwards signing in New England myself.....

Because they are a smart team and can still see the Value he brings to a team.

Sometimes you got to pop in the tape and watch a guy play instead of see'ing how old he is.

I wouldnt be surprised if someone in our division signs him so that we dont.

I think a lot of our problems on the line were due to the simple fact that Rivera sucked like a Kansas Tornado.

I'm not denying his ability - not at all.

But you have to balance dollars and sense.

Given what this team has already invested in the players they have, how does Edwards fit?

We had the 13th rushing attack in the NFL and the averaged 4.1 ypc.

Certainly respectable and good enough (considering how lethal this passing game is) to get this team in deep into the playoffs.

Gurode wasn't the problem. And I'm guessing we do resign him and he starts next year.

Exactly.

This isn't monopoly money that is being played with...

We dumped a big wad of cash on Brady James. I want to see our new coach do something with the guy.

It's not about how our rushing attack improved - it's where it improved. Julius' ypc to the left side of the line was almost 2 ypc better than 2005. It was also a dramatic improvement over his 2004 stats, when he was running behind Flo and Larry. Kosier represented a tangible improvement, Gurode did not.

It may have been just a product of being beside Rivera, that is a possibility.

Looking back at Y. Rich's statistical analysis of the Olinemen, I think Gurode graded out at about 24th.

I just think we could be alot better at the center position. It might not be possible to make that happen, but if we're replacing linemen, I reach for Gurode before Kosier.

I'd sign him ASAP.

If you watch the Chargers play you'll see that he is their best pure linebacker.

He may be 33 but he doesnt play like it and you can just tell hes in really good shape.
Sounds like a "me" guy who's never happy.

Hey we agree for the first time in awhile.

Welcome back to my loving arms Mr. Winicki. :p:
