Things have been pretty rough in Houston for former first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney. He has spent most of his time on the sidelines for the Texans who selected him first overall out of South Carolina in 2014. He was supposed to be a huge factor next to defensive end J.J. Watt, but instead has been quietly rehabbing for the most part.

On the field he hasn’t made much noise either. He has less than 50 tackles and five sacks in his first two seasons. Sure injuries have played a part, but perhaps scheme is to blame as well.
According to Christopher Smith of Saturday Down South, Clowney has always preferred a 4-3 defensive system. The Texans currently run a 3-4 system, which forces the natural defensive end to move outside to linebacker. Smith claims the talented pass rusher even avoided going to Alabama due to the team running such a defense.
In addition, Clowney said he would’ve committed to Alabama “a long time ago” if the team ran a base 4-3 defense instead of a 3-4. (Ironically, the 266-pound Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 draft, now plays outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.)
So maybe Clowney could finally reach his potential if he was placed back in a system that allows him to line up at defensive end. Which brings us to the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys are about as pass rush needy as any team has ever been. Last season’s second round pick at defensive end, Randy Gregory, is currently suspended and in rehab. Their sack leader from last season, defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, is also suspended to start the season.
Outside of those two, the team has an inexperienced group of players like Benson Mayowa, Charles Tapper, Ryan Russell and converted defensive tackle David Irving.
Due to this lack of experience, Dallas should call the Texans and ask about the availability of the former first overall pick, who would immediately become the best pass rusher on America’s Team.
