ARTICLE: Peterman embodies changes in Lions lineup

Damn Parcells. First he made Spears take on a blocker. Then he made JuJo run into his offensive linemen's backs. Then he made our safety cover. Then he made Greg Ellis sign his contract. Then he tore Peterman's ACL.

I do wonder why Parcells soured on him. He seems like the kind of real tough guy who lives for football that Parcells would like.

And as far as being injury prone, that was a horrific injury he sustained to his knee. That's different than tapping out because of a little sprain or tweak like Rogers did.

One problem with Peterman is that he was never athletic at all. You kind of wonder if he could have worked under the new scheme that we *seem* to be going to.

Did Bill really "sour" on him? Of course, he cut him but I recall the PC and Bill made a point to say he thought Peterman could be a good player for someone but that we just didn't have the roster space to keep him.

You have nicely summarized the tone of this board over the past few months. Well Done!

Yes, well done. But Parcells did flubb the dubb (more than once)!

:)

Wow, now I know how bears fans' must feel that Columbo is doing so well over here and he was a first-rounder.

Peterman was horrid. I hope Demarcus Ware ( a productive draft pick) kills Peterman when we face them next.

Yep, and sometimes you just run out of time waiting for someone because you need their roster spot to stash a Miles Austin. I'm not ready to proclaim Peterson "the one that got away" because he's vying for a starting spot with the Lions. Pat McQuinston and Cory Proctor would probably compete for starting jobs with the Lions too.

I always thought Parcells gave up too quickly on Peterman. I mean, he severely injured his knee his rookie year, then had complications on the knee that slowed his rehab. Like it was said before, exactly like Columbo. Except, instead of showing Peterman the same patience he showed Columbo, Parcells cut him a year early. Just think about it. His third year was really like his rookie year. You don't cut a third round choice after his rookie year!

Parcells never really showed much humanity when it came to young players, especially when they got hurt quickly. He put more pressure on Peterman than Columbo just because he felt more pressure on himself for taking him in the third round. Columbo cost him nothing.

I hope Peterman does well. I remember watching him in the Senior Bowl & thought we should take him. When we did, I was ecstatic. Another screw up by a HC I never felt was a Cowboy. He was always NY to me. Good riddance, Bill.

Yeah, that's how I remember it too.

Given:

1. how it usually takes time for OL players to develop
2. the general lack of roster space (it is difficult to "stash" players)
3. the rate at which rosters turnover (due to FA / salary cap considerations)

we are going to see more and more OLs drafted by one team ultimately starting for another team.

Leonard Davis, Columbo, Kosier start for the Cowboys.

Peterman for the Lions, Larry Allen for the 49ers, quite possibly Al Johnson for the Cardinals (any others?)

Colombo was added late in the season when we were churning the bottom of the roster. He was given exactly one month to waste a roster spot, one offseason to rehab and one training camp to prove himself, and he took advantage of it by winning a starting RT spot in a three man competition over two guys who had started in the NFL the year previoius. That's a far cry from Peterson, who had been carried for two years on the Cowboys roster, given a two full seasons and offseasons to rehab and was beaten out in his 3rd training camp by Cory Proctor.

I know the board never passes up an opportunity to blame Parcells for anything imaginable, but I love how Peterson is getting a chance to compete against a bunch of nobodies on one of the worst OL's in the NFL and now Parcells let the next Larry Allen slip through his fingers. No doubt if Peterson were still on the roster with the Cowboys there would be post after post about how he's just been wasting a roster spot because he was Parcells' pet cat.

Peterman problem was that he could only play one position while others like Proctor could play several spots. I still remember BP dressing Proctor (who at the time was an undrafted rookie) at the end of 2005 and keeping Peterman inactive when Allen and Rivera were hurting since Peterman couldn't play left guard.

Man, if he ends up playing well, just another reason for me to hate Parcells.
Hate him for what? Drafting the guy? Injuries or whatever, Peterman could get on the field in three years. If he starts for the Lions, it's because he's all they have. And he's replacing a guy who the Lions said "We don't want you" to so get over yourself Peterman. He got paid, plus had a personal trainer for a couple years keep him in shape for free, so he could get another job. He should thank Jerry instead of complain.

Parcells has always had a short window of patience when it comes to injuries. If a guy gets hurt a couple of times in a row and isn't on the field he writes them off pretty quickly and moves on. I don't really blame him for that as he only has a certain number of roster spots available and they have to be used for guys that will be able to play.

WR Jimmy Smith was cut the same way by Jimmy Johnson after he thought Smith was injury prone and lacked toughness. The guy went on to have a great career with the Jags and we really could have used him opposite Irvin.

In Peterman's case it was just bad luck and bad timing with his injuries and BP saw him as being injury prone. In the case of Rogers, he was just lazy and was truly a wasted pick.

I hope Peterman does well in Detroit, I'm just sorry that things didn't work out with him in Dallas.
It's the Tom Landry rule. If a guy doesn't perform after 3 years time, he probably won't ever.

Peterman had two full years to get over his injury and compete for a position. If he had shown something he would have gotten a shot. But he didn't. We cut him. End of story for us. Maybe peterman does become a good player- we did not have the roster position to waste on him.

Peterman didnt play enough to be considered horrid. I think he gets and "incomplete" for his time here. He does however need to **** and worry about blocking long enough for Drew Stanton (lol) to get the ball to Calvin Johnson.

I honestly liked him the whole time, too. I think Parcells was a little rash.

Sheesh, whatever happen to letting guy develop?

Yeah, i don't see the need for all of the venom. Personally, I would love to see Peterman become a very good player in this league (and he very well might) just because I would love to throw it in the face of everyone who decides who is a bust after two years.

It doesn't have to mean that Peterman was a scrub or that Bill was evil either. Peterman just got beat out by a young guy who flashed a little potential and seemed to be more reliable because of injuries that derailed Peterman just a little bit.

How long do you want to give a guy? You have only so many spots and if he can't get over an injury in 2 years.. see ya later. It doesn't mean he can't play, but you can't wait forever.

Fair enough, but I disagree on the premise that offensive linemen don't even hit their peak playing ability until around the age of 28. I remember Parcells having a lot of love for Peterman, too. But he just lost his head over the injuries, apparently.
