That works great, but if a game runs a little long, and you are not there to continue recording the game, you will miss the end of a few games!

I usually don't record games but if I do I record the shows that follow it just to be safe.

I have Directv with Tivo, and I do not ever use pay per view. So there is no reason for a land line. I live in NNY, and with all the snow we had this year I never lost the feed. I have maybe lost if for a total of 30 minutes or so in the five years I have lived here. Just about everyone I know loses their cable service for at least that much a MONTH.

The DTV customer service said you have to have a land line to use a DVR......lying bastids

Obviously, you've never had a dish.

I don't want the stinking dish.

  • I have HD and I appreciate not having to paying extra for the 17 HD channels I get.
  • I appreciate the better reception I get in bad weather.
  • I appreciate my cable bill costing me less than what the dish would cost.
  • I apprecaite having more overall channels even though I watch very few of them.
  • I appreciate having the channels I do like on expanded digital basic instead of having to buy three different tiers with lots of channels I don't want just get the single channel I do want. (though NFLN my be the first I end up having to purchase)
  • I appreciate having my cable, unlimited long distance phone, and internet access on a single bill for a combine $99.
  • I appreciate not having to sign a contract for my service.
  • I appreciate not having to put an ugly dish on my house.
  • I appreciate not paying a setup fees.

I can continue, but you get the point.

I keep trying to tell you, you don't need a land line. The land line is simply for order pay-per-view stuff through the receiver. Other than that, you don't need it.

As for reception, it's all about where the dish is pointed and how well it's mounted. I had my neighbor adjust mine and I got great reception. When I upgraded to HD and DTV changed out the dishes, I only lose reception when there's a major storm going thru. And it has to be major-major, like hail or something.

You do if you want a dvr.

I have two DVR's in my home (one DirecTV Tivo receiver & another HD DVR receiver) and currently neither is hooked up to my landline. Now, I just moved into my new home and phone service was not set up when DirecTV did the installation; however, that does not belie the fact that my TiVo and my HD DVR are fully functional without the use of a landline phone.

I even ordered the Dela Hoya/Mayweather fight through my HD DVR. It didn't show on my other receivers but I could live with that.

Can you get the Sunday NFL Ticket Package with your cable so that you can watch any game that you want on game day?

No? Oh, sorry!

No offense, but do you have to have her "permission" to do it? I realize marriage is a team effort, but maybe you should negotiate it in there the next time she wants something. Then again, if it doesn't work out, and you need a good divorce lawyer ..... :laugh2:

You know? Your right! I'm going to tell her to "just shut up, and leave me alone"!

If I want a toy, then damnit, I'm going to buy it! That will teach her to mess with daddy!

You showed me the light, verdict!

I used to only subscribe to cable, but I now have basic cable and Directv. If I could pick up the local affiliates in crystal clear reception without an antenna for my wife's enjoyment ( :bang2: ), I would drop cable like a hot rock.

  • Cable is great when the weather's great, but one knocked down cable line equals hours (if not days) of no cable whatsoever.
  • It's about the programming package you're willing or prefer to have. My Directv bills have all been lower than my previous cable bills with similar programming carried on both systems.
  • The contract covers the equipment and is paid for within a acceptable period of time, usually 12 - 36 months. Afterwards, you pay for programming only.
  • Dish placement is by choice and is not mandatorily attached to one's rooftop. The dish itself can also be enclosed in a camoflage unit at a very low cost.
  • If you decide to initially subscribe during a promotion period (as I did years ago), Directv will waive the setup fees.
I can't counter the points made about HD channels and the combined bill (even though Directv is working towards that goal by experimenting with service agreements with Bellsouth [phone] ).:

I'm hooked on my DVR like crack. I record everything to watch later so I can skip commercials. :D
DVR is the best thing since wonder bread, I basically live by it. The only thing I basically watch live is the Cowboys.

Nope, but 14 of the Cowboys 16 games last season came on TV here in the NYC area. I didn't get to see the Falcon game as I was working and the other one I just dropped into a local sports bar. Now, if I were a fan of the Rams, Browns, Falcons, or some team like that I might actually require NFL Sunday Ticket.

Weather doesn't effect cable tv. A tree down might though. Of course if a tree comes down and knocks out your cable, it's probably going to knock out your power also since they tend to run on the same power poles. I pay $29/month for my cable tv with 17 HD channels and I get all the channels that I want. (except the NFLN which Cablevision doesn't even offer) DirecTV can't come anywhere close to that. Believe me, I've looked into getting the NFL Sunday Ticket. It would have cost much much more per month even without the Sunday Ticket.

The only time my cable has been out, is when I completely redid the exterior of my house and upgraded my electrical which was cause to redo all the wires as they entered the house.

I had no choice on the Falcons game, but I watched the Commanders game at the local bar. (Though I hate the "bar scene")

Well, I guess that you only watch Cowboy games?

Not me...I like choosing the other matchups to watch also, like watching the RedStinks flounder around, watch McPuke fake another injury, things like that...and The Sunday NFL Ticket allows me to pick and choose as I wish...

Man, it must suck to just have a choice or two, when I can choose any game that I want to see. Hell, I can record one while watching another...

Cable sucks! My dish has gone out in a storm maybe two times for about 30 minutes in the last 7 or 8 years...

Wait until some drunk driver takes out a cable pole of yours...see how long that takes to get fixed!

You put down the Sunday Ticket...BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE IT!!

:laugh2: Man, that must suck!

5Stars,

Not really, I generally watch several games a week. Thats one good thing about how they handle nationally televised games. They usually pick pretty good matchups to show. Granted I don't get to pick any game I want to watch, but it's usually not slim pickins.

You are fortunate to live in an area with reasonable cable rates. When I lived in Montgomery, I was paying $19 a month for basic cable with 73 channels. When I moved to Atlanta, they wanted $65 for basic cable with 50 channels.

Currently, cable runs about $45 a month for basic where I am now. For digital cable, I would need to pay $65 a month. With the dish, I pay about $60 with ultimate TV. The same basic package would cost me about $70-$75 with cable. Cable is a monopoly in most areas, so they are able to gouge their customers.
