You're not sure if Chris Johnson would be better than Joseph Randle?

I think they're at the same level at this point. Interchange either one between the two offenses, and you would get similar results. DeMarco Murray wouldn't be producing with this play calling and this line play like garbage.

Give Michaels a couple of games and then see if anyone cares about CJ1k

I spent a lot of time studying the running game last season. I rarely thought Murray helped the OL.

Yes, he might have gotten 2 yards when Randle would get 1, but Randle does get the extra yard or two at times.

Also, like you said Murray might not have some of the big plays that Randle has had.

Your evaluation of Murray isn't consistent with either what I saw when I watched him closely in my summer review of last year's games or what was said about him last year.

I do agree that Randle doesn't get any credit for the times when he picks up an extra yard or two, primarily because fans are focused on the other times when he doesn't. That's because we became used to Murray doing it. (I consider him the opposite of Randle in this regard. There were times that he was stopped in his tracks, but those were the exceptions while Randle making extra yards is more the exception. As Murray wore down last year, though, he had a lot more of those carries where he didn't make anything extra.)

The mind-set here seems to be that the offensive line is at blame for Randle not looking as good as Murray did last year or Johnson is for Arizona. Apparently, the line that blocked perfectly for Murray is imperfect for Randle.

That's akin to me to crediting the increase of sacks in last Sunday's game to the players executing better instead of the presence of Greg Hardy. The scheme looks good when you have good players.

You don't remember the constant complaints by fans and even some media that Murray had poor vision and missed a lot of opportunities. People laugh about Randle's "meat on the bone comment" but multiple media people indicated that he thought Randle was correct.

Yes, Murray got an extra yard or two often including many times where he already had the 1st down and the extra yard or two didn't really help much. The issue was that Murray appeared to miss many opportunities for bigger gains. The OL was really blowing open some big holes last season.

There was also the complaint that Murray would run right at the defender when he got into the open field and it did happen often.

Murray left to the Eagles because they paid him just 2 million more. I'm not saying pay him what the Eagles paid him. But maybe the Cowboys could have countered with 1 million more per. year with an incentive laiden contract that would increase base on performance.

What I'm saying is I think we left Murray go too easily. Then we were content with the scrubs to fill in the gaps. Now come to think about it, if it would have saved this season from tanking, I would have signed Murray to what the Eagles gave him. This idea that he will break the bank is a myth.

Good post, I think the FO didnt really want to sign murray, and let him know that, then he got mad and we know the rest.
the whole we cant pay but this amount take it or leave it was BS and led to romo hurt and this season going down the tubes.
Cowboys final offer was 6 mil and 12 G, and it was the 12 mil that was the bad part of the offer.
plus the market value was 8 mil .

Philly gave him the 8 mil plus 20 G so he jumped at that, the G money is what the player want in case they get hurt etc.
That is the security for them, and murray needed that as he had been working for peanuts at around 1/2 mil a year.

They could have just made bigger offer on the G like 18 mil and 6 mil a year plus incentive bonus for doing good on the field, and sweet
talk him, instead of take it or leave it, and he would have stayed.

If murray had stayed , that would have changed the course of events that led to Romo hurt.
And Murray had the rep here so teams would fear our run game if it was working or not.

How many is a couple? And then what qualifiers are put on that when he doesn't get enough carries?

I'd say if we don't know what we've got with him after the next two games, we're still in the market. That said, I'm pretty excited to see what he can do. Surprised you're not more on board with him, stash. He seems like the kind of guy you'd get behind.

Oh I am, don't get me wrong. I like that type of back, but I'm not sure if I like him yet.

I hope that somebody can seize this opportunity and excuse the pun, run with it.

This here. Also, it's very possible that some of the guys may take a step back with some growing pains. Teams have a season of tape to check tendencies. Also, we have a pretty predictable offense and it is very evident when we are going to run, couple that with an ineffective QB and teams not having to double Dez, which leaves more players to tend to the run just in case.

I remember people complaining (even a former NFL player) about his vision before last season, then those complaints went away or morphed into complaints about his running when in the open field. I agree with the open-field complaints. For some reason, he took poor angles or made poor decisions when given space to work with. When space was limited near the line of scrimmage, there should have been no complaints about his decisiveness or choices from last year.

My preference between the two has always been having a back who can succeed on the short carries than hit the occasional home run, although I prefer to have both.

... And somehow I've ended up back in a Murray discussion, so I'd rather cut this off. It really isn't productive to talk about what Murray is or isn't. My concern remains the backs we have being able to consistently get turn the poorly blocked plays into positive yardage. That's what good starting backs do, they juke, power, spin or whatever to beat the defender who has gotten through. They don't always win because some losses can't be avoided, but the good ones win more than they lose ... that's what makes them good. I'm still waiting to see that this season.
