At what pick do you start to consider trading up

For the life of me, I don't see why some of you are always wanting to trade down to obtain more draft picks. We're a Super Bowl contender, not a rebuilding team. We don't need to draft 12 players just to end up getting rid of half of them. We don't have the roster spots. We need to draft guys that will contribute NOW. We need to draft some superior O linemen, maybe a safety, an ILB, and maybe a reciever. That's about it.

Forgot, we also need a kicker if Bueller can't get the job done on field goals.

I don't. I would trade down, but not up.

Me too, only way i would trade up is this way;
say you have an offer on the table and you have talked with several teams about m bennett, or barber or whoever for draft picks, you keep that ace in the hole

then say in the first round, at 23 or 25, 2 of the top players are still there at 22, but your afraid they may be gone by time you draft, and thats all whats left on your number one draft board, then you might trade up one to 2 spots to assure you getting a really impact player, but dont trade up above 2 spots or so, cost too much to trade up above that, to get an impact player like in 2008 draft when we got felix jones nad jenkins,

then in rounds 2 to 4, i might trade down just a little to recoup a pick you might have used to trade up or trade a player for extra picks

this draft is very deep and very talented if you have done your homework

what you have to do is hope some team reaches like in 2007 draft for players like
16 GB Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee, 18 CIN Leon Hall, CB, Michigan, and
22 CLE Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame in 2008 NFL draft or

Players like these below in the 2008 draft
14. Chicago - Chris Williams (OT) Vanderbilt
26. Houston - Duane Brown (OT) Va Tech
29. San Francisco - Kentwan Balmer - (DT) - North Carolina
in the 2008 draft, that should leave u with a good player for the 27th slot

Bottom line, you stick with how your scouts built the board, you never never ever reach, and you go by your board, say by 27th our time comes up or even 25 and top number ones are gone on our board, then you trade down, say thing in round 2 to 4, but try to get some extra picks in 5 to 7, for sleeper picks and so you dont have to compete for players when draft is over that your real high on in low rounds

kinda like when we got Leon Lett or Jay Ratliff in lower rounds

I don't believe in the decade or more that I have been on sites like this one that EVER fans want to trade up.

Of course if they had their way back in the day, we miss out on Emmitt.

You missed the McFadden craze in 2008? Every thread was how to trade up to get him.

I dont think were talking trading up to the top 7 where Mcfadden was picked, but maybe 7-8 places up.

Star, good post, you are absolutly right.

Well, I actually meant the non-crack addicted pipe dream trade up theory.

If the player they covet gets close, I'd rather they be agressive and ensure they get him than make the same mistake they did last year with Unger.

I hate trading up. To me it's being overly arrogant about an inexact science.

So you hate getting players like Tony Dorsett, Emmitt Smith or more recently, Mike Jenkins.

OK.

The entire draft is an inexact science.

It takes two to tango though. You dont give away the farm to move up just to make sure you get somebody. Nobody knows what trade offers are made and refused, you cant say the Cowboys made a "mistake" because they didnt move up to get your guy, maybe they did try.

I agree, we need a few solid players not a bunch of scrubs. I would be all for trading up a few spots if a good player dropped down but I would prefer to just stay put and take the best player available.

If we trade at all it should be for a higher pick next year, not a bunch of lower ones this year.

I'm not necessarily saying we should trade up. I just don't think we should trade down, again. Like others have posted, if there is a player still on the board at around 20, we should at least look into making a play for a trade up in order to get him. We shouldn't reach, but trading up a few spots to get someone we really want makes too much sense. Having said that, we would still have to find a trading partner that isn't demanding too much to trade up. I'm just saying we should be open to a trade up, but definitely not trade down. We need to grab a player, preferably an o lineman, that can contribute. We don't need more special teamers, at least not early in the draft.

No, you're right, I can't say with certainty.

But I've read plenty that says they wanted Unger last season and didn't get him.

None of what I've read said anything about any attempt to move up.
