At what pick do you start to consider trading up

I want to trade the 22 pick in the first round and a spare player who will not make this team for a RB in the top five picks of the draft theory.

But the temperament on all boards is never ever trade up because you never get what you pay for.

Of course Emmitt stands as a testament to this theory being a smidge incorrect.
And other trade ups stand as a testimony that it is still a roll of the dice. No one can show me that every trade up has worked out like the one for Emmitt.

I am opposed to trade ups for only one reason. Greed. I am a greedy draft ***** and I want all the picks. Trade downs get me more draft picks to feed my sickness. At least I admit to my flaws.

Hos mentioned the same thing, but Jimmy explained his rationale behind doing it and it made sense. It was also in the days before the salary cap, where it wouldnt have the effect on a teams cap structure, nor would there be a problem with trades. If there had been a cap system in place, I'm about 100% sure they'd never have used that supp pick on Walsh.
That just means they couldn't afford it. That doesn't mean they would somehow be more certain about the pick just because there's a cap.

And I still love that "draft *****" mock!

We've still got a draft class from last year that hasn't really seen the field.

In 07 we had one of the best drafts in team history, one more like that and it will put us over the top.

One more stinker like last year and we could be in bad shape down the road.

If Berry falls past 15 or Iupati falls past 20, I'd make phone calls.

Other than that, chill at 27. Don't trade down though.

No way Berry falls that far.

I also usually favor trading down for a lot of reasons.

1) More times than not the team trading down gets more "value" than the team trading up who often is willing to pay a little bit of a premium.

2) I just think the chances of improving your team increase with increased selections. I'll take two 2nds over one 1st, two 3rds over one 2nd and so on.

3) When you select and pay a 1st rd guy, you're really commiting yourself. You pigeon whole yourself into giving him the bene of the doubt. He may make your team over some other better player because of the investment you have in him.

Via multiple trade downs, I'd prefer to turn my 1st into an extra 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th. Or something similar.
Now as a team you're in a better position to do a couple things that lead to the best possible long term results.
You can honestly draft BPA throughout the weekend and once these players make it to camp you can keep the best perfomers with little consequences.

But...........this doesn't make sense every year and for every team. I may like it 2 out of 3 years. Maybe even 3 out 4.

There are seasons when a trade up makes more sense. I think we're in that spot right now.

We have excellent talent and depth in many spots.

We are a SB contender.

We have or at least should have a laser focus on our OL.

We just went volume big time in the previous draft. Only so may spots on the 80 man roster and obviously far fewer on the 53. We don't need to be grooming, training and developing too many prospects for other teams.

We were thinking OL with our 1st selection in the 2nd rd last year and just missed. Necessitating the trade down when Unger went off the board.

We just can't let that happen again. We have a top OL prospect we really love sitting in the high teens or low 20's, we need to be proactive and go get him.
