At what point does the head coach go to the DC to make changes during a game?

We saw how bad things were, at what point during the game would it have been right for shotty to go to Parker and say hey, let's make some adjustments? Or does he fill the need to let him learn on his own? How should this be approached??
I don't think Schotty has anything like that in his plans. It seems Schotty has given CP total autonomy over the defense, with no possibility of adjustments not coming from CP.

Between Jerry’s meddling and the media’s ragebait tweets, we end up with fans treating him like Coach Schadenfreuder.

We’ve seen it all week. Post after post of people lining up to feast on the misery. Rapturous in their own pain and eager to share the trauma.

It’s a good thing he appears to be a pretty upbeat and positive guy. He needs it.

Parker did look lost at times
To be fair, it’s the 4th DC in as many years. In terms of personnel, two thirds of the defense is different from last year, plus the unit had no reps at all during the preseason. Glitches had to be expected. The thing I was mostly mad about was not making any adjustments to having wide open backs in the flat all night.

You came to the right place for insight. The right time is right after the film session on Tuesday. These coordinators are paid well to do a job and the HC can't be coaching or scheming during the game.

A point of order.
St. Parker has no prior experience as a DC. It is on the job training for him.

It seems very likely to me that Shotty does not want to interfere with what CP was hired to do. I can only imagine that they already discussed what CP is there to do and agreed to go with that from the start. Schotty isn't a defensive specialist and isn't qualified to take on that responsibility. It's a done deal. There's a reason why he's been permitted to coach the offense all along. That seems obvious.

I'm just saying for him to go over to him and say hey man let's maybe try something different that's all, yes it's too early in the season for this but it's just a thought, especially seeing what he went through with eberflus

That's why the head coach and D/C have head phones.
Flip the switch and talk to him without yelling on the sidelines.

Shotty’s forgotten more about defense than anyone in here will ever know, but don’t let that stop you from embarrassing yourself with another football take
And his track record with us shows it.

What a stupid argument. No fan could ever discuss football if it was about whether one was active or not. I wanna see that esoteric fool gone, just like our QB and owner. And no, I have never coached the game, played at QB or owned a football team. And that's why I don't make the decisions but can discuss them as much as everyone else.

Sometimes you just can't I mean when you make a game plan and you have things that you studied film on and you go into the game it's kind of hard to reshuffle the deck in the middle of the game there's very little time and when is he supposed to do this they have barely 10 minutes at halftime to use the restroom and eat and then have a quick meeting but most of the time they don't even talk to each other that's what I hear..

Oh make adjustments at halftime or on the sideline in the heat of battle I mean how many breaks are they really getting to just redo the whole thing and scrap it?

So there's a There is no good answer all they can do is between each series whether it's the defense sitting on the bench or the offense you can run over there with your iPads and say this what went wrong with those plays this is what you were supposed to do and they got to hope that the next time they call that play that it'll be run better and executed better I don't think you can scrap the entire game plan in the middle of a game..

You can make adjustments but they're very small like I just said you gotta tell players where they're making their mistakes and to do better on the next series that's it,

Usually what you need to do is between games and the new game plans and in practice you try to make these adjustments but once you're playing the game live it goes by really fast there's not a lot of time to change everything...

Look that's my opinion I think it's a overrated narrative that you can like completely make big adjustments and and scrap the game plan in the game..

This is simple the defense needs to know their assignments when they bust an assignment you go to the sideline and you show them how they busted that assignment but that doesn't mean that exact play or series is is gonna have that happen again But you just have to go to them and say this is where it went wrong do better next time don't fumble don't drop the football run your route better I mean there's nothing else you can really do except tell them where they're making their mistakes and hope that they don't do it again the rest of the game..

I don't know how you coach a player to not drop a pass I mean I'm pretty sure they know that already isn't that what the statement from Brian Stottenheimer said like George Pickens not having a good game and he he says I don't need to talk to him he knows he had a bad game and then he needs to catch the football..

Isn't that the same with most professionals I mean this isn't high school they know when they missed a block They know when they fumble they know when they had a ball bounce off their hands and it turned into an interception how bad it was they know where the mistakes are and the coach can tell them about it but it's up to A professional who's making millions of dollars to just do better just do your damn job better.

In all seriousness, usually well into a season when he feels like his job might depend on it.
I think you have it part right you can't really do it in a game from what I understand there's not much time at halftime most people are eating using the restroom time flies by you can't make huge Adjustments in a game I mean you can talk to them when they're sitting on the bench between series whether it's the offense or defense you can show him the plays where they busted an assignment but there's no way to just change the entire game plan during a game..

You just have to let them know where they busted their assignments and do better when you do do this you do it in practice between games you watch film you try to show them where they went wrong on that play what they should have done right and then you hope that they pick it up and in the next game it gets better that's what we're hoping from Game 1..

A lot of misinformation and false narratives about how you can just make giant adjustments in a game there just isn't a lot of time I think most of these professionals know when they made mistakes or they can hear it once and fix it the next time I don't think you need to make wholesale adjustments but it would be between games more so than in games.. IMHO

I just don't really believe the fact that they have to wait till desperation time for coaches and players to make adjustments I think sometimes you get to know your team through the first 4 to five games of the season now you have to figure out whether you had the depth chart right and whether you're doling out reps the proper way and maybe you make changes there with players And you take some of the things out of the playbook and add some of the things in the playbook that your team does well that you now know your roster better and you can get it figured out..

At any point he wants. He should have done it last week. Problem is, he's to worried about calling plays
No professional offensive-background head coach is going to undermine his new defensive coach during his first game.

The damage it would do to the players, the coaching staff, etc. would basically end the season before it started.

My guess is Schottenheimer will voice his opinions and advice during coaches meetings during the week but will let his defensive coaches work on fixing the problem especially during games.

You really think Shotty knows much about defense?
Yes but the problem is he can't make those adjustments there's no time in the game he's already the head coach and while he's responsible for at least making some comments to his coordinators and his assistants he has a job to do on offense as well he's calling to plays,

Of course he knows about defense how do you think they come up with game plans to defeat defenses You do realize they have to know defense in order to beat defenses..

Pretty sure he's done that pretty well over his career whether you think so or not when he was with Seattle Russell Wilson had some of his best years. Three of his best years were with Schottenheimer as the OC, And last year the offense looked good if your offense is doing well it means you know how to defeat a defense you know what defenses can stop your offense so yes you must know the whole game it's the same with the defensive coordinator must know offense because he has to figure out a way to defeat them on a regular basis he's watching film of course they know about the other areas of the team..

The problem is they don't always have the time head coaches can't micromanage during games he has to trust his coordinators and assistants will get it fixed he can't be over there while he's trying to coach the rest of the team and especially on offense which by the way has not been a problem since he's been here...

But the time to do that would be between games when they're in the film rooms when they're on the practice field you can walk over and say I don't like what I saw last week out of this player or this grouping or play call or scheme whatever it is You do that during practice you do it during film but you can't do it in a game it's hard to do that in a game you're being pulled in 17 directions That is why you delegate I mean people don't understand it's run like a corporation you have to trust your employees are gonna do their job and the only time you can have meetings is not when they're working it's you have to call a special meeting and let them know where they're making mistakes and that you want it fixed.
