I haven't been serious on a Cowboys' board in years. Even when me and you are going at it, I am laughing . This is nothing but entertainment for me. Alexander is one of the best posters on these boards though.

Agree. Except for the "Alexander" and "best poster" parts. :)

Nothing here's worth getting worked up about.

He is a good read, I will happily admit.
As are you my friend.

I thought that the Cowboys would sign a free agent backup Guard. They have Zero Interior OL depth.

Remaining free agents:
Zach Allen IND
David Arkin MIA
Gabe Carimi TB
Brandon Carter DAL
Daryn Colledge ARI
Harvey Dahl STL
Ray Dominguez DAL
Dylan Gandy DET
Richie Incognito MIA
Davin Joseph TB
Chris Kuper DEN
Mike McGlynn IND
Uche Nwaneri JAC
Rich Ohrnberger SD
Seth Olsen MIN
Jeff Olson DAL
Garrett Reynolds ATL
Wade Smith HOU
Chris Spencer TEN
Randy Thomas MIA
Brian Waters DAL
Travelle Wharton CAR

I would consider Colledge at the vet minimum or slightly above. I would consider Davin Joseph for the vet min plus playing time incentives. Harey Dahl along the same lines although he is recovering from ankle surgery. Most of these guys are fringe starters at this point so there would be nothing hurt by signing one. Likely no guaranteed money and minimal cap effect.

Some of them will still be out there after the draft.

I don't think there is any chance of getting Zach Martin in the second..I know he has dropped some because of questions about playing tackle but you don't go from mid first to mid second without some major occurrence.

I am sure some of the board OL experts were all over Carimi too, but you know they won't ever admit it. Fact is he was considered almost everyone's fall back option in a trade down. Can't remember the number of mocks that had us dropping to late teens or early twenties for him. I had doubts about him being a great T, but really thought he would be able to move inside and be a 10 year starter type. Of course, the same could be said about John Moffit who has disappointed as well. He was another sure thing. Add in Konz and Zeitler and overall the Wisconsin OL studs really haven't stood out on the pro level.

Yeah, I thought he'd be pretty good too. I wasn't sure how good but I thought he'd be solid at worst.

There were a lot of people then that said we should trade back and take him and pick up some extra picks. I remember one guy saying Tyron Smith was better he thought but not much better and we could pick up some extra picks and still fill the hole at T with Carimi.

Just goes to show you that sometimes getting the guy who is the blue chipper and has rare traits is the way to go... even at the expense of extra picks.

In most instances quality beats quantity.

Guards are guards.

Who needs them? They only win you the line of scrimmage on Sundays.

Enough about that. Do you guys think we should sign a cornerback or three?

Always with the FRESH and new "witty" comments........why dont we just call this place BashZone and just get it over with

Right now, no. But let's see how the draft goes. It sounds like Zack Martin may be there in the second, that would be a nice pick in the second round.

Where did you hear that Zack Martin might last to the second round?

Anything I've heard has him going in the 15-25 range.

It would be a steal to get him in the second.

IF you don't find what you need in the draft, grab some guards when team have cut downs. It's too early to grab below average talent to fill perceived holes.

The site I saw this was draftek - has him going 31 to the Broncos and labeled as a (-4) slight reach.

http://www.drafttek.com/2014-NFL-Mock-Draft-Round1.asp

In getting that link I read how they do their mock draft now - in years passed they used all the other top draft sites to make their board, but it sounds like they are using their own guys now. So yeah, your 15-25 projection sounds about right looking around the net on it.

Rich Ohrnberger wasn't awful in limited snaps and has youth on his side.

Wharton played pretty well last season, but might be expensive.

Garrett Reynolds is probably my favorite of the bunch, think he struggled because he was surounded by far worse players-just wish he could also play center.

Regardless, I think they need to address backup depth in FA, though I suspect they might be taking another lineman high in the draft.

I figured that they would try to sign one of the guys you named without any guaranteed money. I guess those players and agents are waiting for a team that will guarantee some money before training camp.

I actually prefer to get multiple OGs in the draft, but I just thought that they wouldn't want to be forced to do it.

Zach Martin will not drop to the 2nd round. He might drop to the twenties, but the 2nd round appears impossible at this point. Another lower ranked OL or two would have to get drafted ahead of him and that seems doubtful.

I remember a lot of posters and media liked Carimi. That was one year where I had no doubts about who the Cowboys should pick. It was Tyron all the way.

Agreed. I think you can find serviceable depth guys after June 1.

I still wouldn't be opposed to drafting a G or T or both early though. I don't trust Free, Bern, or Leary's knees. A guy like Kouandjio or however you spell it, who could probably play guard and coached into a RT makes a lot of sense.

If you're leery of Leary's ligaments then you probably don't want any part of Kouandijo's knee

The problem is that with the ability to designate June 1st cut ahead of time, the number of actual June 1st cuts is much smaller.

No. The only player that I know for certain that has the same issue is Jonathan Vilma. For him, it was diagnosed in High School and he went on to play in college and 10 years in the NFL without a problem.
