The biggest reason why this team is soft is because there is no emphasis on being a tough team. The culture is set by ownership, not the football staff, and you see the result of that when the Cowboys face a team that can punch back.
I mean but let’s be honest we are getting killed by teams that aren’t considered tough. Saints just overmatch us in toughness?

Yeah, there's a reason those ancient guys were available for peanuts at the end of training camp. They aren't very good.

And the kicker is, it's early in the year when they should still be fairly fresh. Imagine late in the year when they're beat up and tired.
What’s funny though is one of the biggest wreckers I saw yesterday happen to be 35 year old linebacker. She ain’t the problem it’s these guys just can’t play. Every time someone questions why is this guy available if he’s so good people bring up Mickey but it’s a simple question. No one is giving up or releasing a contributor.

The Saints are pretty tough at the line of scrimmage. Taliese Fuaga is a brute. Cesar Ruiz is tough. On defense, they have been tough at the LOS for a while, and DeMario Davis is a tough SOB at LB. The Cowboys lost that game at the LOS, and lost it badly.

The Jones boys bargain shopping DT at the last moment is a big reason this defense is soft. Go back and watch how bad they were blown off the line. Jordan Phillips should never see the field again. He was completely manhandled one on one all day. Pushed back 10 yards on one of the TD's. When you have atrocious d tackles then nothing else matters on defense. Micah and Diggs are useless so why pay them? Until the Jones boys understand how important the line of scrimmage is on defense expect to see a soft Cowboys defense when they get punched in the mouth.
What did you expect they did nothing to improve the roster after that beating by Green Bay and then all they did was spend all their money on two players

Phillips was terrible. The rookie Justin Rodgers probably would of faired better than him. 6'2 330 vs Phillips who plays too tall at 6'6 340 and 31 years old. Phillips got moved out like he was a 280lb DT.
Just like he always has.

While I don’t like the approach…..we got killed sideline to sideline yesterday. DT wasn’t the only issue.
It's the primary issue. The DT's aren't good enough to collapse the pocket, move side to side to make plays. When your LB's have to collapse in to protect the middle, it dang sure is a DT issue. You cannot have a good D w/ ordinary DT's.

I think we already went bargain shopping....Joseph and Phillips is what you get. Again, it is GM incompetence they went into the season with a few position groups lacking so much talent. Not much you can do now. Don't give up a pick either. They should have invested in FA at a moderate price. We may not have a player outside of Osi who would be on another active roster. That is bleak.

That's true but when you get a HC like the Lions Dan Cambell, the team adopts his culture of testicular fortitude to accompany the talent

However, a team like the Dolphins has talent abounding but McDaniels demure aura seems to manifest itself with their team in losing games they should win, especially when toughness is needed in cold weather games.

There are exceptions to that of course.
Sure, which goes to show once again that rating a team using individual players doesn't work.

And Osa wouldn't be starting on good D's.

I agree why they lost it I just don’t know if I can sit here and say it’s just rough as….i just saw an inferior team. I wish it was just lack of toughness but I’m afraid it’s something bigger.

I listened all week to beat reporters from New Orleans who were afraid of Cowboys pass rush because of their issues on the offensive line. I just didn’t see it. There were suppose to be mismatches on that line and it wasn’t. Pure domination.

They were exposed. It will continue. There are ways to stop the run. One way is to use DEs to set edge. Let Parsons play the ball instead of going after the qb on run plays or short yardage plays.

The first series we at least gave them a fight. Parsons was flying to the ball. We stopped the run for the most part. But then we let them get to the edge. Wore out our trenches. Then we got killed and gashed. We should have had 5 sacks. We never even sniffed the qb.

I will say the whole first quarter the ref sided with them and helped give them at least 14 points. That 70 yard bomb happened because Parsons was held and walked right past the qb. No call.

Dak played ok. He threw a pick trying to squeeze it in. The first one was on Brooks. He fell. He has Lamb to throw to and Cooks. Tolbert is looking better. But where was Luepke. He is supposed to be a bigger part. Yesterday our staff was over whelmed. Zimmer looked lost. MM called some bad plays. We didn’t execute. Again with the penalties. Tighten up and get back out there.

Campbell has a good team. He’s probably what’s holding it back.

When you skip FA and wait til the end of preseason to see whats out there, this is the result.

Not to mention, we’ve only taken two defensive tackles and in either of the first two rounds the last 30 years and they were Trysten and Mazi Smith.

Maybe on some plays but when I see linebackers getting pushed 10 yards down field I can’t always blame that on tackle play.

Yeah but I can’t even buy that excuse. The issue isn’t draft capital it’s developing what you have. It’s hard to find great play in the interior and a lot of the good ones aren’t first or second rounders. Maybe there’s a development issue. Hill should’ve never been drafted they knew the red flags and still went there.

What is crazy is the A+ level of blocking the saints had. Guys couldn't get off the run blocks. Even the WR's and TE's had A+ blocking down the field creating big runs. It's like we are still in preseason mode. Like oh wait we can make tackles now. Watching the game I can tell we have to very lazy players that easily gives up on a play. Carson constantly gave up on pursuit and effort. I've watch him constantly just give up on a play. On the screen TD run Demarcus Lawrence ran past him to try and make the stop, while he did a little jog down the field. Hooker easily gave up on plays. On the screen play he was looking right at the RB and basically got in Wilson's way who was trying to pursuit the runner. Just terrible effort at home vs the Saints. I guess the defense expected to just show up and everything will work. Do these guys not get chewed out and put on blast during tape review?

How many times do I have to tell this board that size at DT doesn't matter, it is about mobility and the ability to penetrate and get off of blocks.

Since the Rams playoff game, this board has opined for massive 1T players independent of their movement skills...well, here you go. This is the defense you people have been asking for.

I honestly think Phillips got benched in the 2nd half.....but no one is confirming that. He was that bad. I would cut him immediately.
