Well we still have to go best available in the draft, especially since we will probably be drafting low.

We do need a guy though, impact player on D, and I don't think he just has to be a DE. No reason to get desperate and overpay like the Giants did.

We have to look at whats out there, who we can logically get for a reasonable contract thats for what they are worth.

We cannot do as the Giants did. We need to follow DEN and NE's blueprint for adding that one big name guy. The right piece, that sets us over the top. No 200mil frenzy, that would be insane, Freeze :)

He is a master at breaking through the point of attack, even with the unfortunate hand incident. He isn't getting the flashy sacks, but he's more disruptive than any of our OL minus maybe McClain (given McClain's position) and Tank.

We may be able to get him for around 6-7aav, but that's probly wishful thinking. He may also progress as he learns to play with his unfortunate handicap. He was a Cowboy killer, he'd be great here for the right price, Stash.

I think Doug Free would take a pay cut to help make it happen!
:lmao:

Conversely, I'd be willing to trade picks to 'go get' a quality pass rusher if the opportunity presented itself. I'd prefer that over the draft 'not falling for us' as happened this year regarding Ogbah or Kevin Dodd.

This would be another interesting approach, Stash. Trade up a few spots, shed a second to get a 13-15 high end DE (4-3) prospect

That's my thinking. They did it for Lawrence and that looks to be paying off for the most part (if suspensions and injuries are truly behind him).

And given how well this team is set up for the future, I'd be willing to take quality over quantity in the 2017 draft. If I walked away with just four quality contributors instead of seven possibilities, I'd be thrilled.

Well it better be a good deal cause trade ups rarely seem successful for non premium position players. We are talking about a DE of course, so that is a premium position, but waiting on players to fall to us isn't bad come draft time.

You want to plug a hole, its free agency. If there is noone there worth it, no reason to sacrifice the future unless it is someone really worth it.

Doug Free -- the Cowboys salary cut extraordinaire :) he's done at least one, already. Poor Doug Free lol

He's a solid player among a line of stars. We could do better, but we could do worse too.

But his salary is such that it's either a restructured pay cut or get cut. And the team needs to figure out what the future is there. I'd be happy to pay Free for a few years to be the team's swing tackle if he were so inclined, but his number has to come down.

Yeah, but that would have to be the right guy. Question is, will that be available this year.

We do have a longer window right now, no need to waste it......we have time to wait now.

I'd take one stud at a position of need and three other players over seven good players, given the team's current makeup. I'd give up considerable draft equity to get a stud pass rusher if I could, including using my 1st and 2nd rounders to do it.

Given their current business model and recent history, I don't see them spending in free agency. They had even bigger needs this year and refused to spend. Given the success of that approach, I don't see them changing it.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post, Stash. I'm a fan of Free, and Green hasn't shown for any length of time that he can stay healthy. Free is solid, and OL age the best, probably, of all the every down positions.

I disagree, respectfully, Freeze. We can't wait, we can't continue to develop (well, we can, but that's not my point here). We have developed a potential juggernaut as it stands right now, we must make a splash signing, a single splash signing that augments our draft and roster and fills a hole in the front seven. A signing that puts us over the top.

Continue to grow through draft, but one key, big signing would be awesome for the club.

At the end of the day, we might have to move on with our warts, cause every team has them.

Sounds good, I like it actually.

But who is that guy. I can't think of one guy worth all that whos available.

I don't know, to be perfectly honest. I need to look at MLB free agents and DE free agents. I haven't given it a ganders, yet, despite my headstrong stance. I will.

That's where our cookie lies, Freeze.

I just checked and Chandler Jones is a free agent. He is pro bowl level edge rusher but I'm not sure if Arizona let's walk but a big name is available.

Jones would be nice, but he's an OLB/3-4 defender, no?

Also, Church has been really nice this year being safetied (pun) by Jones. We need to upgrade other parts of our D before SS, namely DE and MLB.
Jaylon will be our upgrade at MLB. I would say OLB opposite Sean Lee needs upgraded though. I agree with you though, I was down on church but with Jones at FS Wilcox and Church have played better

If we get Jaylon, we are the class of the NFC and can focus purely on DE and even CB. He would shore the hell out of our D. I've never considered him, Irving, because at this point he seems too good to be true.

I have all the faith for this kid, tho. And he's always in the back of my mind. Migosh if we get this kid. Holy moly.

I definitely don't see it in free agency. Too many guys they want to keep to be adding huge contracts to it. The plan seems clear to build through the draft, but recent misses and mistakes at defensive end make that spot a huge priority, and one that I personally would be willing to pay considerably in draft equity to correct.

I was hoping they would let Calais Campbell go a few years back to no avail.

What I'm saying is this, we look back on guys like Charles Haley added at the right time. Reggie White to the Pack. Things like that just don't happen everyday. We even tried with Hardy. I hope it happens, just don't expect it to happen just cause we have the money to spend on the guy.......I would rather sit Tony on the bench then have some mediocre guy to basically replace him.

Back to topic, Church and Wilcox can be easily replaced in the draft. Anything big, all we can do is pray it comes our way.
