Baseball is Over

Baseball needs to address the money disapities that exist. New York, Boston have revenue streams that the small markets do not have. Baseball in Boston sells out year after year. Prices go up but no one cares.

I think a salary cap would be good for the sport. It can't be fun to be a KC fan going to the park to see the Minor league equivalent talent team get pounded all season.

And on the occasion they have a good young player a big market team signs them away.

Baseball is a game that relates to baseball players. It is best seen in person. It's for a fan that watches all the games, its a passion sport. But my older son just finished fall ball and has played circa 100 games past calender year, I love nothing more than going to a ballfield and watching a good baseball game. To me ite pure Americana.

Or sitting in the Bleachers on a summer afternoon at Fenway. It's a great experience for a baseball fan to take in a major league ballgame.

Its hard to get excited about watching teams like the Yankees playing vs other teams. You look up and down their lineup and their 8th hitters are as good as most teams lead off batters. If teams in every market could compete it would be more enjoyable.

Another point about the atmosphere. The Rangers park is known as a hitters park, not because of the dimensions (which are pretty close to Safeco's dimensions), but because in the warm weather and that Arlington jetstream, the ball takes off.

I've heard that Rangers officials can change the wind flowing through the stadium by opening up or closing off different parts, which creates a jetstream effect that drives balls out of the park. Not sure if it's true or not, or if that's the jetstream you're referring to, but that makes a big difference.

Yeah, that what I was talking about... And I don't doubt they can do that. I just haven't seen it done.

Yeah, who knows. I've heard the same thing for certain football teams, who do something close to that to change the wind on kickoffs or field goals.

The good thing about baseball is that with the exception of the Red Sox recent champions have been small to medium market teams, and three of the final four this season had small payrolls. But I agree on the salary cap, although personally I think they should include a salary floor and change how international players are brought in. Few teams have a heavy advantage on signing Latin American players away.

In 2000 Hicks closed in the Gold Club which is essentially a glass closure that allows high-ticket fans to watch a game in A/C, what's believed is before the glass the wind used to flow through (Kinda like if you open a window on each side of your car) but now the Gold Club glass has pushed the wind back out towards right-field and thus the ball flies out. Hicks ran a study the past year to decide if it did indeed affected the wind and the study came back inconclusive but there were grumblings that he wasn't being upfront, for one his son was in charge of the study and two they used a model.

Hate to say it but I think the Rangers need to dome the stadium, even if there are no wind problems it's a beating to watch a game in August and I can't blame anyone who stays at home. There was talk that with the construction equipment/cranes nearby working on the Cowboys stadium Hicks could do it cheaply, but knowing how cheap he is I doubt he'll do anything :(

The games are played at night. Baseball has always been played outside in the heat. Baseball teams use the elements just as good football teams to their advantage.

People who say they hate baseball is because they could never really play.

Now that would be a welcome addition, but it's doubtful the money will be spent. Hard to believe how miserly Hicks has become, compared to how he started out.
