If he were going to make the roster, we wouldn't have traded him in the first place. If we have a major unmet need right now it's at WIL/MLB or the rush end position, not DT.

I know he won't make the team, but is he really any worse than guys like Bishop, Hayden, Coleman and Minter who actually might make the team? If the answer is no, then our lack of talent is pretty sad.

If he's still injured then the Pats haven't even looked at the guy. All they have is a very little bit of film to go by. No NFL team is going to know this guy as well as we do. He may have a coach or two in his corner who will discuss him with another club. He's going to have trouble catching on with any team if he's still injured. Maybe someone will pick him up if he's able to pass a physical. He may have to try again next year.

I think a better question is: what do we call the official Ben Bass fan club for when he's brought back?

Basstronauts?

We traded an injured player for their injured player. We have designated the CB, Green, for injury.

Our talent in the front 7 is sad, no doubt. He's hobbled, which makes him worse by definition. And I don't think Minter makes it, either. I don't think he's as good as Coleman. And I'd personally try to sneak Bishop onto the practice squad if he doesn't do something ridiculous in the 4th preseason game.

The biggest thing is we're having to hold roster spots for Lawrence and Spencer now, which makes those DL spots even more scarce. We might go long early at DL by shorting elsewhere, but it's still tough to justify.

Remember: If this guy had been healthy last season, things would've turned out completely different. :p

We could really have used him in the 3 tech rotation last year as Hatcher was wearing down. A play or three from the DT position could have made the difference in more than one game.

So Ben Bass gets us to, say, 9 or 10 wins?

I agree with you about Coleman and Minter. I also agree that Bishop deserves to be on these practice squad, but I think Hayden is so bad that he might have a shot at the 53.

Edit: Hayden is so bad* I meant to say

I don't know. I don't like the game of assigning wins to individual players in a team sport. If he's on the roster for, say, 12 snaps/game in a rotation...does that get you a couple of plays out of him in one of the 5-6 games we lost by less than a single score? Enough to help? Or does it maybe get Hatcher enough extra rest to make a play or two on his own to help his contract year push? Maybe.

Ben Bass is now a street free agent, which is exactly the kind of player the Cowboys were relying on last year at defensive tackle. If someone thinks he was the difference between playoffs and no playoffs, so be it.

I agree with you about Coleman and Minter. I also agree that Bishop deserves to be on these practice squad, but I think Hayden is so much that he might have a shot at the 53.

I want to cut Hayden, too, but we just can't. He's the only guy consistently serviceable enough that we can count on him to play snaps in games.

Coaches aren't like fans. They're not going to put a guy in a game if they're not sure what he's going to do. Hayden is going to get in the way before he gets beat. But he'll be in the right place every time, giving a high effort. That's more valuable than a guy with more potential who will make a better play much of the time and then give up a big one.

All of that is true, and I wouldn't argue with it.

I just hope Brent, Okoye and Spencer can come back and contribute this year. I'd usually prefer a young talent over a mediocre veteran, but we don't have any legitimate young prospects besides Lawrence, Crawford and maybe Coleman.

Ok If Bill doesn't like him, he's done ala Tebow...

Yep. We've needed to spend high picks the last two drafts on the DL, and we didn't.

I do think Coleman's going to be a decent player, btw. Maybe even better than decent when he gets his technique down and his strength up.

I agree in principle, but I'm not certain that Bishop's not slightly better than Hayden. Bishop will likely make more mistakes, but he has some quickness to get to some plays that Hayden can't. If McClain can't play, then they probably need both Hayden and Bishop because guys like Coleman or Minter are not a good option at the 1-tech DT position.

They say that T. McClain will attempt to practice on Saturday and might have practiced a couple of days earlier if not for the Thursday game.

I'm about ready to give up trying to predict what they will do. I'm irritated with the Spencer decision.
