Hmmm… I’m going to call BS. Johnson currently is making 1.95m a year as one of the highest paid coordinators. Campbell is currently making 4m. The current going price for an entry level/first time head coach is 5 to 6m! Reid and McVey were able to negotiate those contracts because they had a “recent” proven record as leverage. If Johnson said 15 it’s because he didn’t want the job and saying so got him out the door.
Even as one of the most sought after candidates next season I’d surprised if anyone was willing to go more than 7.5-8 and that’s pushing it considering how many first time head coaches fail!
Thanks for putting some numbers behind this. I genuinely had no idea what coaches make.

North Carolina pays Mack Brown more than the Cowboys pay Mike McCarthy. Brown is 73 years old. Likely coaching his last year. UNC will pay Johnson more than $8 million per season to get their program moving forward again. If NFL teams are not comfortable with the salary Ben Johnson is looking for they should hire someone else.

Rusty''s rebuild plan thread mentioned him as a prime choice for Dallas's next HC.

But I think there's something a whole lot of people are leaving out.
And that's the fact that he's 2 deep at RB, 3 good receivers, a top 3 to 5 TE and the best o-line in football.

As I've said in another thread, I'm not trying to take anything away from the guy because I'm sure his coaching may stand on its own merit.

But what I will say is that he is definitely a product of a very good offensive environment with the players I mentioned.
Fully agree BUT BJ knows that the Cowboys’ job is a rebuild with an average QB (with a very bad contract) and a controlling owner who has no clue what to do — this and the fact that he is in high demand, why not ask for this type of money??

Well, exactly, and I think one thing that makes this price tag worth it (besides the fact that there's no salary cap on coaches and the fact that Jerry's insanely rich) is the fact he'd put priority on running the ball. We need that.

What is he making in Detroit? 2-3 million? Seems dumb to make salary demands before you’ve proven anything as a head coach.
When you are quite literally the most in demand name around you get to have a bidding war like that.

1 - Jerry isn't going to pay that kind of salary to a coach. 2 - Why would he come to Dallas and be nothing more than a brown nosing puppet for Jerry?

Some coaches still have a little self respect.
Until Jerry does us all a favor and dies, any coach that comes here is either going to be a moron, a desperate loser, or both.

Good point. I was just trying to show the basics of how the surrounding environment ie players dictate success whether coach or player.

Now, the elite of the elite generational coaches/players can often carry and lead different organizations to success even in adverse conditions.

But the only sample size we've got on this guy is under the best of player environments. So the counter is why should he get that type of coin if he hasn't proven he can coach but in perfect conditions.

Total risk/reward call on hiring him imo by the other 31 competent GMs.
