I have never understood why people root for teams they have no city or state affiliation with. I just don't get the thought of randomly picking a team to support. I know there are states and many major cities without professional teams but they should be fans of the closest geographical team to them.

I started rooting for the Cowboys because the first NFL game I ever watched was Super Bowl V. I had just finished playing my first season of peewee football. I happened to like the Star better than the horseshoe on the helmets. It helped I moved to Arkansas right after that so they were on TV all the time. I'm a Braves fan because that's the first game I ever went to see in person. I got to see Hank Aaron hit HR 690. I became a Lakers fan because I had to do a book report and I randomly selected Wilt Chamberlain because I had heard of him before. This was all when I was a little kid and 40+ years later I'm still a big fan of those teams. That's how you can become a fan if you're not affiliated with the state or city.

But it's Cowboys-Razorbacks-Braves-Lakers

Cowboys are probably my second favorite.

Looks like we have something in common. Due to my son, I have to keep an eye on Cowboys and I really can't wish ill on them anymore as I hate to see my kid upset.

That never stopped my (step) dad. He hated the Cowboys with a passion. His favorite team was the Bears but if a Bears loss would hurt the Cowboys he would root for the other team. He was my step dad so I figure he didn't feel the same way with me as I do my daughter. Luckily for me she followed in my footsteps and is a huge Cowboys fan. In fact, she is a big fan of all my teams. I'm lucky like that.

Blood is really different. I can't even imagine enjoying my son's misery. Good for you and your daughter.

1) Dallas Cowboys

2) Baltimore Orioles (converted Upstate NY'er, tired of seeing Yankee killers on the team the next season)

3) Syracuse Orangemen (grew up 45 mins from Carrier Dome)
4) Miami Hurricanes (loved the team since they upset Nebraska for the National Championship)
5) Buffalo Sabres (sigh)
6) Boston Celtics

It's gonna be a couple of sad sad days when Romo and Dirk retire. My two favorite players in any sport possibly ever. I grew up with the 90s Cowboys, but Romo and Dirk have basically been around my entire adult life so there's a connection there that I never had with those previous teams and players.

It also helps that they're just a couple of really good dudes. I'm hoping Romo's career follows Dirk's a bit and he finally gets that championship before he hangs 'em up.
