Some of the comments about Deion being the best CB ever got me to thinking. What's your best Offense and Defense ever player by player.

Offense

QB...John Elway. I just think he is the mold for the QB you want.
RB...Walter Payton. This is the hardest one for me. Jim Brown?
FB...Larry Csonka. Would fight you.
TE...Tony Gonzalez. Re-defined TE role.
WR...Jerry Rice. The best football player I have ever seen.
WR...Fred Biletnikoff. Greatest hands ever.
LT...Anthony Munoz. I believe he is in the top 3 players ever.
LG...John Hannah. His wars with Randy White are the best football I have ever seen.
C...Chuck Bednarik. Concrete Charlie may be the toughest SOB to ever play. I respect that.
RG...Larry Allen. The most powerful player ever.
RT...Dan Dierdorf. One of the most underrated guys ever because he was a Cardinal.

Defense

LDE...Reggie White. The Minister of Defense was a terror.
DT...Randy White. Half man. Half monster. All around awesome.
DT...Bob Lilly. He was simply unstoppable without a double or triple team.
RDE...Deacon Jones. The center piece fo the Fearsome Foursome and the guy peopel really did fear.
OLB...Jack Lambert. If you needed a big stop, this guy made it.
MLB...Dick Butkus. He defined nasty and he could destroy an Offense.
OLB...Lawrence Taylor. Only Jerry Rice was a better football player IMO.
CB...Darrell Green. I always admired the way he played.
SS...Ronnie Lott. Oh my gosh what a game changer.
FS...Emlen Tunnell. A fearless leader who played with passion and anger.
CB...Deion Sanders. The only true "Shut Down Corner" I have ever seen.

This is a list of players I respect. There isn't a Kicker who fits that criteria.

No one used stick-um like Biletnikoff. The man practically bathe himself in the gunk.

EDIT: Here's one vote for Jim Brown. Walter Payton was Sweetness personified, but Brown was Superman.

I got to see Elway for 10 years while living in Denver. great arm - but I would put Montana and Stauback ahead of him.

Would not have had a SB ring except for his team getting a RB to save his butt from people believing him a winner. I give the credit to TD 90% and Elway 10%, for the 2 Denver SB rings.

I'll just post what I'd change here...

WR - I'd trade out Fred for either Cris Carter or Tim Brown. Fred was a good player but the dude used so much stickem that it would have been impossible for him to not catch the ball.

QB - Definately would take Montana over Elway. I liked John as much as the next guy but for my money there simply was no better QB than Montana, especially in the big games and in the clutch.

TE- Shannon Sharpe. I like Tony, he's great, but I just always liked Shannon better.

I love the picks on defense. I see no reason to change anything there.

Damnit Hos, I'm supposed to be writing a paper. :bang2:

QB: I think I'm going Elway as well. Clutch, and could run.
HB: Emmitt Smith. Homer? Maybe
FB: Jim Brown. Brown was listed as a FB, not a halfback.
TE: I'd have to go with Gonzo as well. Witten has a chance here though.
WR: Jerry Rice. 'Nuff said.
WR: Randy Moss. Wont go over the middle, but you dont need him to.

I'm going to skip Oline, because I dont know enough about prevous linemen.

DE: Randy White
DT: Warren Sapp
DT: Randy White
DE: Deacon Jones. Coined the term sack for a reason.
OLB: Jack Lambert.
MLB: Ray Lewis. Close 2nd was Dick Butkis, but his team never won.
OLB: Derrick Thomas. Tragedy kept him from being an all-time great.
CB: Dick Lane. Still has NFL record 14 picks that he set AS A ROOKIE
CB: Deion Sanders.
FS: Ed Reed. My age is showing here, but he's a freak, and playing hurt with nerve damage for the rest of his career.
SS: Definately Ronnie Lott.

I'd have a hard time not agreeing with that defense. I would have a hard time leaving Bobby Bell off that team. Lanier, too. I'd have to take Lambert out and put Bell in there. He could play in and out. You can't leave Butkus or Taylor off. You just can't. I wouldn't change anything else.

Just off the top of my head, I'd replace Elway with Unitas and give him his goto guy in Raymond Berry. But there is more talent to be had there if you divorce play calling from the QB. Unitas called his game. And he and Berry had a unique chemistry. Berry certainly wasn't that talented as an athlete. Let me think some more there.

Jim Brown is simply the best. Very few players could have played anytime then and even now. I'd either start Czonka or that hated Commander crazy guy, Riggins. Probably the latter.

I'd start Jackie Slater, the early Erik Williams, Roosevelt Brown or Rayfield Wright at RT. Slater probably deserves the nod but I have to put Brown in there. He was so dominant for his day. Matthews gets one guard spot. Munoz gets the LT. I'd put DeLamielleure or Hannah at the other guard but they couldn't beat Allen out. Jim Otto gets the nod at center over Chuck, Matthews and Webster.

It's hard to pick someone over Gonzalez but John Mackey was a Kellen Winslow/Tony Gonzalez before they were. TEs just weren't used that much in those days. Mackey could play today with his speed, quickness and size and still dominate.

I'd start Paul Warfield over Irvin opposite Rice. Warfield is the only WR who comes close to the talent of Rice.

With Rice and Warfield in the building I'd start Elway over Unitas. Unitas was the greatest QB all considered but Elway had the better arm with the spirit of Staubach. I couldn't put Berry on the same team without Unitas.

Great thread.

BTW, I'd have Ray Guy as my punter, Gale Sayers as my return guy, and Morten Anderson as my kicker. Bill Bates or Tasker at STs probably Tasker.

There's a couple changes I would make to this list...
Take out Darrell Green and put in Dick "Night Train" Lane.
Take out Jack Lambert and put in Jack Ham.
I have a hard time aguing against any of the other selections.
"Night Train" Lane will bring everything that Deion would not-toughness and he could cover as well. Putting him in the same secondary with Lott would have wr's running scared.
Lambert was a middle linebacker and Jack Ham was probably the best technician at outside linbacker during his time, maybe of all time. Ham and all of the Steeler linebackers played all 3 downs, meaning these guys could cover. To me Ham was the best linebacker on the Steelers.
Great list Hostile-I like the old school with the mixture of today's players.

A few players I've enjoyed watching....

Dan Marino - a great QB.

Bo Jackson - it was a great shame injury curtailed his career.

Michael Irvin - THE playmaker.

Charles Haley - one of the few players I have met.

Mike Singletary - Michael Irvin type intensity on D.

It's not that, Buehler has the day off, therefore not eligible.
