Best QB Game

John Elway 34-
Troy Aikman 23+

Leader of most Cowboys passing records, 3 time Super Bowl winner IN 3 TRIES, - winningest QB of any decade, top 5 winning pct in playoff history, Super Bowl MVP. It's not HOMERISM it is a refusal to be intimidated by the fantasy football mindset that thinks stats equal greatness. WINNING equals greatness, and the QB needs to do what is necessary TO WIN.

I agree with this post.

To me, the game has just changed too much to even try and compare production from QBs who played in the 70s/80s and before. Inline blocking rules and the limitations placed on what defensive units can and can't do are just to significant to try and compare the two games. The style of Football you see today in the NFL is just different. I am not in favor of comparing players from different eras side by side for this reason. I am, however, in favor of comparing how each player dominated his era or compared to players in his era as a commen context for evaluating players of different eras. That, to me, is the only fair way to compare.

Exactly right! That is the only way to compare players of different eras and that is why I selected the guys I did to be in my top-5 (Graham, Unitas, Staubach, Baugh, & Montana). Each guy was head and shoulders above their competition and dominated their era.

The guys I selected pretty much represent periods of time and eras of the game:

Baugh = late 30s - late 40s
Graham = mid 40s - mid 50s
Unitas = late 50s - late 60s
Staubach = 70s
Montana = 80s

There were great QBs in the 90s (Aikman, Marino, Elway, Favre, etc.) but IMO none of them truly separated themselves above their contemporaries.

At least that's how I rate players from different eras. I don't see any other way of doing it.

Handoff to Emmitt 25 times a game!

And if that is your perspective of it, then you just proved you either

a. Weren't old enough to have really watched our great playoff runs
b. Saw things through Emmitt Smith loving glasses.

Watch the 1992 Championship game and tell me it was just handing off to Emmitt 25 times.

Watch the 1993 and 95 Championship games and tell me that was all there was to it.

Watch the first Super Bowl win and the last Super Bowl win and tell me it was all about Emmitt.

Your crazy.

I am not contradicting you, just sharing.

Staubach threw to Lance Allworth, Mike Ditka, and Jackie Smith. All HOFers, albiet as greats for other teams first. He also threw to Bob Hayes and Drew Pearson whom most Cowboys fan believe should be HOFers. Lance Rentzel shot himself in the foot, but the guy was a great WR before he sunk his own career in a Corvette.

He also had one of the best RBs ever to throw to in Preston Pearson.

ah, geez...

jackie smith...

the "un"-catch

I would like to point out that while one poster is describing how much influence Emmitt Smith's rushing impacting Troy Aikman's passing productivity during the seasons they played together--the other poster is describing how Smith's rushing impacted only three games.

Just saying.

Not at all. I am pointing out that in the biggest games, at the most needful times, Troy Aikman played like a champion. Nothing more and nothing less. Emmitt played like one too. Michael Irvin played like one too. Only a football idiot would say that Troy Aikman didn't have a major role in 3 Cowboys championships. I know that may sound inflammatory, but I will stand by it, because it is true.
