Season, bro. Not just playoffs. The metric is complete season. When one tries to skew towards an abridged stat to show advantage for their side, it says something. And I was just showing how great Payton was a few years past 30, and not slowed down for their '85 season, not a slam on Emmitt so not sure why defensiveness surfaced.
Everyone...every single football person in the world, probably even Emmitt Smith himself....has Jim Brown 1 and Walter Payton 2, or vice versa. Most have Barry in the top 3. You could twist my arm and have Emmit 4, but frankly I think Tony D was a better skilled player, just didn't have the same otherworldly oLine blowing tunnel sized holes in the D for him.

We don't need someone who is so dallas-biased they can't think straight copying and pasting stats in here.... everyone with a brain and knows football can use their eyes and brain and look at the skill of the player to realize who is more talented. NFL-N had Emmitt 12 (behind Dorsett) and ESPN had him 4. I'd probably fall in between that.

But Emmitt 's own mother would have Brown and Sweetness as top 2.

This clown will retort with " but his YPC in playoffs were better than Jim Browns"

HAHAHAA! I won't be surprised if Wes Welker has better playoff stats that Randy Moss, Terrell Owen's and Jerry Rice. I guess Welker is a better receiver!!! Duuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh

(P.s. this is not towards you Marcus...but the other guy too dim to understand things)

I have a PFF subscription and they are all but shut down this time of the year. I suspect this was tweeted by one of their college interns.

Not even on the list:
A top three all-time team (if not best) was '91 Washington team under Gibbs. They simply *crushed* teams by margins never seen w/any other team. They had it all.

Top three all-time (in no order)
-91 Washington
-89 SF
-07 Patriots
I remember that team very well as I am from the DC area, we beat them in RFK, the Harper Hail Mary going into halftime. They were undefeated I think 11-0 at the time. As a matter of fact we should have beat them to begin the season at home but Emmit got dehydrated and didn’t play the second half. We had their number.

If you look at the stats especially Walter’s, Brown’s, and Sander’s playoff stats versus Emmitt’s.

Emmitt has the most rushing yards and TDs in both the regular season and post season.

Emmitt’s YPC, rushing yards per game, and TDs per game are higher than Sander’s, Brown’s, and Payton’s in the playoffs.

Emmitt’s YPC and rushing yards per game in the playoffs are higher than his regular season ones.

Emmitt also has more SB rings and a SB MVP.

Emmitt is one of two players to score 1000 points in a career.
You can think though, right? And have eyes? Are you just controlled by whatever the stats say?

So would you agree that Julian Eldeman is a better WR than Michael Irvin? He has more playoff yds than Irvin.

U think buffalo's Dawson Knox is a better WR than T.O.? More playoff TDs.

That's what the stats say. Duuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!¡!!!!!!

Again, just looking at the complete body of work for a season and Payton in '85 was impressive at age 32. Running backs today WISH they could slow down to Payton's '85 season. TDs are nice but anyone can be force fed from the goal line. Payton not scoring a TD in the Super Bowl is evidence the Bears didn't do this, although I wish they had for him. He deserved it more than anyone from that franchise.
Looking at the complete body of work for a season, you have to look at the playoffs. Some of Emmitt’s 19 TDs in 92 weren’t coming from being force-fed from the goal line. He had some long runs including a 68 yard TD run. He had three 100+ yard games in the playoffs for 336 yards and 4 TDs including a receiving TD. He caught 13 passes in the playoffs and averaged over 4.7 a carry. He was the main reason the Cowboys won the Super Bowl that season. Walter Payton didn’t score single TD in the 1985 playoffs and averaged only 2.7 per carry. He was a non-factor in the playoffs and Super Bowl.

The 92 Cowboys get a mention.

My own criteria is you either needed to be on the front end of a back to back or the back end to be the greatest team ever

And I get why someone would want to judge them based off soley that season, but I feel if you are among the greatest teams ever, then you should probably be able to win again next year or you are defending a title

So you are saying you have it figured out. Got it.
You have the 92 Cowboys OL wearing down the 85 Bears defensive front by the 4th quarter and manhandling them. You’re acting like you either got a crystal ball or have it all figured out. Lol I think it’s pretty safe to say no one’s OL was going to wear down and “manhandle” the 1985 Bears defensive front. The number one reason the 85 Bears are ranked as the number 2 greatest team of all time according to most rankings is because of their all-time great defense which was led by their defensive front.

I’m going 92 Cowboys. Dec/Jan 1992, Dec/Jan 1993.. 14-1 when it counts the most only losing that 1st game in Dec of 92. Then a 13-0 run from that point through 2 championships.

I watched the 1984 super bowl again. Refs can really dictate the outcome of a game.

At one point the 49ers had a 21-10 lead with the ball. Threw a pass that was caught, took a few steps and fumbled. It would have been returned for a TD by Miami but it was called incomplete. It was not incomplete. It should have been 21-17. Instead it turned out to be 28-10. Game over. One mistake by the refs ended the game. People never want to talk about that.

The 07 Patriots are often included because there just have not been any all-time great caliber teams since 2000.

They're the closest thing to an All-Time Great team that the internet generation has seen.
Maybe but if your going to put out a all time great team by 1 year, THE FIRST parameter needs to be did they actually win the SB!

The 1992 Cowboys were one of the top 5 best teams. They were certainly better than the '78 Steelers and the '99 Rams, both good teams but the 1992 Cowboys were better. But this is all just conjecture since these teams will never play each other.

I understand your point, however great that Bear DL was they would not hold up for 4 quarters with one of the best run blocking OL in history. Not only were they good they had a big size advantage, which they used on teams in the 90's. Dallas popularized large OL that could play. They would wear down the Bears defense and the Dallas defense would stifle that Bears offense, which puts the ball back into Dallas hands for more muscle football.

You don’t know how they would’ve held up. You’re documenting how the game would have played out like you have a crystal ball. Lol There were teams that held up against our OL. The Cowboys lost three games in 92 and won at least a couple of dog fights. There was no defense in NFL history more dominating than the 85 Bears. No OL was going to wear them down and out muscle them. Dream on!

The 78 Steelers and 92 Cowboys wipe out the rest of that list.

That Dallas team beats any of Brady's teams by three touchdowns, and that Chicago team by 40 points.
They beat the 85 Bears by 40 and have just as good as a D as the 85 Bears. Something tells me you didn't see the 85 Bears

Baloney. 93 Cowboys easily beat the 85 Bears. Cowboys defense was comparable and the Bears offense was mediocre. Cowboys had an offense that scores on that 85 Bears, and a defense that the mediocre offense of the 1985 Bears would have trouble putting up enough points to keep up with the output of the Cowboys offense. 93 Cowboys also had clearly better special teams.

Top all time:

93 Cowboys
84 49ers
72 Dolphins
The 92 Cowboys should be on the top 5 list but they did not have a comparable D to the 85 Bears.

Except the metric is ...... complete season. Not sure why people keep trying to shoehorn playoffs only when we're looking at an entire season. I get that the playoffs mean more for legacy but the entire work is what you were referring to when you said he had slowed down and what I addressed by showcasing Payton's year at age 32 which was very arguably better than and was certainly comparable to Emmitt's '92 when he was 23 years old.

The force feeding at the goal line wasn't my main point but if you compare the two, Emmitt had TD runs of 5 yards or less on 12 of his 22 total runs for TDs (54.5%). Payton had runs of 5 yards or less on 4 of his 11 total TD runs (36.4%) which again highlights the point that he was not the automatic goal line choice. That's just team's decision to spread it around. For Chicago, seven other players scored 18 total rushing TDs besides Payton (remember they had the Fridge thing going on that year too) including 8 TDs scored by Chicago QBs which I assume were short yardage. Emmitt by comparison had only 2 other players score 2 total TDs besides him. I mean, I don't know that it could be any clearer than that. Payton hadn't slowed down and maybe it was the team managing his use that helped do that.

We rode Emmitt to a Super Bowl championship in 1992. The 85 Bears rode their defense to a Super Bowl championship. Not wasting anymore time with this.

The Bears rode their defense yet also scored more per game than the 1992 Cowboys did. Again, these weren't the points I brought up with you, only your claim that Payton had slowed down in 1985. I think I've shown that he hadn't.

You see how Micah Parsons wears down playing DE at 245? Imagine every Bear DL having that same challenge holding up against up against the run. Leverage and technique plays for a while, but a good, strong OL that out weighs it's opponent by 50+ pounds per man will win the day.

My dream is your nightmare.
