While it would be better to have bigger CBs so that big WRs do not out muscle them, its better to have a CB that can play no matter what his size.

Yup thats their height.

You can have some shorter CBs, but teams also need some bigger CBs on the roster.

The thread was about CBs. Taking out the 6+ CBs and all Safeties, the list becomes:

Brandon Boykin cb 5'10 - 6 (decent arm length at 31.5, also 3 of 5 CB teammates are 6'+)
Tramaine Brock cb 5'10 - 5 ( 3 of 6 CB teammates are 6'+)
Logan Ryan cb 5'10 - 5 (5-11, decent arm length, plays with big CB Talib 6-1, 205)
Alterraun Verner cb 5'10 - 5 (7 or 9 DB teammates are 6+, others are 5-11 Sensabaugh with super vert, 4.3 speed and decent arm length, the other is 5-11 Wooten with well above average arm length 32-3/4 and weight of 210 lbs)

I would prefer to group the draft prospects by overall length (height + arm length) but the arm length in not yet available for all players in the draft).

Scandrick and Moore are shorter. But they play with Carr who is 6ft and Mo is is 5'11 with 33 1/3" arms next response? This debate is becoming useless. Now if you want to use the response of this defense just needs to get CBs who can make plays on the ball better, i would agree. But to simply say they need to get bigger thats why they are struggling i dont buy it.

As someone who played FS and CB, I just want to add this small tidbit for your perusal and use at your leisure.

Richard Sherman is an anomaly. So is Patrick Peterson. Darren Woodson was an anomaly as well.

The vast, vast majority of defensive backs, particularly CBs, usually don't check in above 6'0". Cornerback is not about size, it's about fundamentals, speed, and smarts.

It's even better to worry about fixing a historically bad front seven and the two S spots so that the already over paid CBs on this team can do their job.

I would completely ignore the position this offseason.

I love big cornerbacks on a defense especially if you're blessed enough to get cornerbacks who can open their hips without slowing down inthe process. These type of players don't come a dime a dozen but if you can stumble across one you better go all in to get him.

If Jean-Baptiste is there in the middle rounds, I'd take him.

Yeah people get down on Mo but after a slow start this yr he turned it on in that Denver game in the 2nd half. Manning wouldnt even throw to his side. Too bad he had those nagging injuries and unfortunate about his dad, then his baby being born. He had a yr. He is growing, i think he;ll be fine and be back to starting this yr. Scandrick is best in the slot too. You add a Chris Davis and you have something going with this Cb core. Then there is still Moore. This team needs to play more man tho. Thats where Mo and Carr thrive in. Scandrick IMO can play either.

the way you describe our current secondary you would think our nickname was the legion of boom. now why would we need to draft another top corner like chris davis. fact is our secondary really could use davis because we have only average at best cbs. currently jerry went way over budget on this group. mo better perform or he is toast. carr has 1 more season in big d

We need good corners, regardless of size.

Darrelle Revis, D.J. Hayden or Brandon Flowers, anyone?

Personally, I think we need some guys who can get to the QB.

You do need good DBs. But the size of receivers is getting larger and larger. The league got big on the OL once. Then it got big on the DL. We have had smurf attacks be successful but by and large you want big, fast and good. This offense required the CBs to come up and play the run even the 5 and 7 hole.

Big corners would definitely help with the scheme we are attempting but it still won't matter with no-speed Church and no-clue Heath back there. We have to get better at Safety.

I agree we need a playmaking FS and I'm hoping either Wilcox and/or Johnson can be that guy. I like both Church and Heath. Church is an average player. Heath intrigues me. I'd still draft a S high if the right guy falls to us.

Most teams that have a smallish CB also have a bigger CB on the other side.

Revis is 5'11-1/2 with long arms.

Hayden is 5-11 with good arm length.

Flowers is the only 1 that is really undersized, but KC has Sean Smith (6-3, 218) on the other side. They also have Sanders Commings (6-0, 223) as a backup.

The Cowboys 4th and 5th CBs are Webb (5-10, 184) and Sterling Moore (5'9-1/2).

You can get a Revis or a Daryl Green but you really need some bigger corners since CBs like Green don't grow on trees. Accurate passes to big tall receivers are difficult to defend.

I think you and @xwalker aren't far apart. You can play pass defense with corners who are on the small side of course. Plenty of shorter corners who could play lights out. I think @xwalker and I are saying it's easier to play someone like Sidney Rice or Megatron with a longer CB. Like @burmafrd said they all have to play well regardless size. But you are always looking for bigger, faster, longer corners although you do have to have someone with the quicks to plays guys like Beasley, Welker or Amendola. Most guys with the quicks are going to have lower centers of gravity and are going to be smallish.

Thats why Dallas has Carr. I think Carr got alot of unjust hate this yr. Mainly because he had Heath behind him. Dallas rarely played man this yr. In that DET game Dallas was playing Carr under alot, He couldve jammed up CJ better but CJ is the best in the NFL for a reason. But you saw Carr releasing him and CJ would find that space behind Carr and in front of Heath 100% of the time, or Carr would release inside on them crossing routes and again you saw that OLB out of posistion alot. Carr let this be known after this game, and Garrett echoed that too. Even Stafford said Heath was late all of the time and that was automatic. Im sure Carr just got beat his fair share in that game too. CJ is just a beast. I just dont agree with the argument of this team struggles because of height. They have height with Carr, and Mo's length. I think thats why Mo will start over Scandrick, Claibornes length. Scandrick is perfect to play the slot Wr because he's quicker and is more aggresive on them inside routes. Im sure all teams would like to be taller, but in todays NFL its rare to find them 6'2-6'3 CBs who can turn their hips without getting a PI because theyre using their hands too much. Peterson and Sherman are rare.

I just think this team needs to get these CBs making more plays on the ball, or find some that can do it. Wether they are 6'2 or 5'10

Ravens Webb shut CJ down with another short DBs help in a zone coverage Matt Elam, both are 5'10 who remembers that?

I don't think of Carr as long but I do consider him physical and a decent press corner. He is not a small corner though. The conversation is not about specifics although some examples were thrown out there. He's talking about long corners in general and needing one or two on the roster.

I say we need a couple but not just for covering. The corners need to be big enough to come up and either support the run or even cover the 7 hole. This defense demands good tackling.

It's good to see that someone can understand a general concept.

If there was a length measurement (height + arm length), then Claiborne is the "longer" player:
Claiborne 104.25

Carr 103
