Biggest 2023 cap hits via Spotrac

I'll put it this way .........if you can find me a rookie QB that can guarantee me a better record than 12-5 last season.......let's talk. I say guarantee coz Dak has done it. In other words, we know what we have with Dak, but drafting a rookie?

"Greatness isn't achieved by following the status quo."

"Change doesn't always progress, but the status quo isn't always the best result either. It is merely the most convenient."

How rest of this year plays out will be interesting. Jerry passively implied that Dak needs to step up now that he is healthy again. The schedule is favorable. With this defense, expectations are growing. Jerry is in his 80's now.

What does Jerry do with another playoff failure?

I would not be against drafting a QB high next year. Would Jerry?

No. Don’t restructure him; that’ll only push more dead money in the future. Ride it out with him and then cut your losses.

I don't believe that is how the Cowboys feel about Dak. Clearly there are those who disagree. Cowboys signed the deal knowing full well they would be restructuring it.

Lets cry over 2 maybe 3 years of cap pressure from Prescott'scontract, after when its said and done, he will have given us 5 to 8 years of decent QB play.

Its laughable to use someone for 5 years and then complain about paying him for a couple of years.

Who would ever want to be an Alpha if thats how Alphas act? Its like a petulant child that uses excuses.

So the starting QB of the Dallas Cowboys, who earned roughly $3.75M in 4 years in his negotiated NFL Players Union rookie contract, and then was given $31.4M guaranteed his 5th year, was used according to you?

Well you give me $35M over 5 years and I will have no issue with being 'used'.

Ryan's dead cap number, when he's released or traded (doubtful) will be about $18M next season. I expect the Mahomes and Allen deals to be redone in time, despite their length.

Allen signed a 6-year deal wherein not until 2025 does his salary cap hit rise above $41M ($39M in 2023, $41M in 2024, and $51M in 2025) but by 2025 his dead money is $20M so should he get seriously injured or his play drop off Buffalo has an out but Buffalo does not have to renegotiate his deal.

Mahomes signed a 10-year deal wherein he makes $35M in 2022, $46M in 2023, $44M in 2024, and $46M in 2025.....and 2025 ends his dead money so KC doesn't have to renegotiate his deal at all.

The issue with Dak's deal is that he and his agent forced Dallas to a 4-year deal thereby putting Dallas in a bad situation by forcing a renegotiation in 2023 or take on a $49M cap hit ($52M in 2024) and having Dak's dead money extending into 2025 before amove can be made (clearly too late as a renegotiation has to take place next season or take a major cap hit).

The fact is, whether some like it or not, Dak and his agent put themselves first by demanding a 4-year deal instead of a 6-year deal which could have spread the money out netter all in the name of Dak wanting another big payday in a few years.

Matt Ryan's numbers look bad.

And he was just benched for Sam Ellhinger or is it Ellingher. Anyway supposedly for rest of the season.
However Ryan is dealing with a shoulder issue.

Colts made some poor moves at QB over the past few years. Wentz, then Ryan.

Hilarious that his cap hit is higher than Mahomes and Allen. Best thing to do is draft a QB in the incoming draft and let the rookie cook and develop, similar to Mahomes while Alex Smith was still the starter, while Prescott continues to stink it up until his contract expires. Hopefully we can keep a SB window open for that long….
I would draft a QB every 3rd year regardless of who is the starting QB.

The value of finding a.starting caliber QB is extreme.

Imagine how much money the Packers would have saved if 2020 draft pick Jordan Love had turned out to be a Justin Herbert level talent.

Remember there's also an $89M dead cap hit. Even knowing this some of his critics are still saying trade or cut him after the season and take the hit:huh:

When a players cap hit exceeds his average salary it is because that in past years the team pushed money into the future for the purpose of signing other players.

It is like getting a home improvement loan which increases your total house payment but you used the loan to buy a new car.

On paper you have a larger house payment but in reality part of that payment is for the new car.

This is what got me more than the money, they length of the deal.
In hindsight Jerry should have given him that 4 year deal 2 years ago. They wanted 5 years. And it cost them much more. $35 million on the tag, then he was injured. Then they caved for the 4 years.
This could go down as the biggest screw up yet.

I like Dak to a degree. But he wants his slice of the pie more than a SB, as some will say. Many players fall into this category, rather wrongfully applied or not, fans will claim it. Just as fans claim Jerry and Stephen are more about the money than another SB. Neither is totally true.

I say he wants it both. We will see how much come next off season, if they don't win it all this year.
I like Dak, but have some reservations also. Will wait and see how he does for the rest of this season. Before I come to any further conclusions. For now...go Dak, go Cowboys....

Since they were drafted in the same draft and it seems relevant to this convo...

Career earnings to date:

Jared Goff- 134 million
Carson Wentz- 128 million
Dak Prescott- 131 million.

Always Be Developing.

I will say this, I think that Prescott needs to finish strong and show that he deserves this money. If he does, I think the team will likely restructure that number.

If he doesn’t, the team needs to think about it’s options in getting out of that deal.

But I don’t think that anything else should be a guarantee at this point.

I think the teams view might change a bit depending on the outcome of this season, the play of the defense and the 4-1 record with Rush

Maybe so,I don't think what rush did or did not do factors into anything. Dallas either stays with Dak or they look to bring in a QB. I don't think that is in their plans as of now, I think Cowboys fully intend on restructuring his deal and understood that when they signed him to his current deal. This is nothing that they did not foresee when they signed Dak.
