Biggest 2023 cap hits via Spotrac

I wouldnt pay Allen...I would let him walk to a division rival and draft.

Sound logic.

Dallas should evaluate what positions or side of the ball Will McClay seems to hit home runs on and build the team through rookie contracts at those positions and spend money at the positions that they arent so good at drafting.

Sounds like Will McClay makes up for a top 10 QB contract...whether you want to admit it or not...or whether you want to gripe about QB contracts and value all day or not.

Dallas seems to be able to afford a high QB contract based on how well McClay is drafting.

Not really that hard to understand.

It's very simple. There are only two active QB's in the entire league that has played for the same team longer then Dak. Deck Carr for the Raiders whose team owner is just as bad as Jerry and Aaron Rodgers who is probably thinking right about now he should of called it last year. Signing a QB to a second contract (no matter what the dollar amount is) is foolish unless he is a proven winner in the post season before his first contract runs out. Dak will probably be here another 3-5 years because Jerry is to stupid to do anything else so expect nothing to change. Who knows maybe over the life of Daks contract we might win one more playoff game but that's his ceiling.

Dallas problem was not extending Dak earlier.
They wanted to wait and see something, and the look cost them a fortune.
Had they extended him earlier it could have been as low as 25 a mil they were paying.

Look around the league. No one wants to watch football with you lack a QB. And there are not that many in the league.
Dak is a legit top half the league starter by even the harshest of critics and people can cry about salary but that is on the Cowboys FO.

Remember there's also an $89M dead cap hit. Even knowing this some of his critics are still saying trade or cut him after the season and take the hit:huh:

Jerry made his decision on Dak when he gave the contract, and already recognized is a restructure.

You can’t and shouldn’t force a pick at any position, ever. That gets you Taco, T. Hill, and a rapping corner. Just say no to forced picks.

Likewise a team should never pass on talent, even if you have an established starter in front of a guy who has talent that you want to draft. A good example of drafting for talent, not need, got the Packers Rodgers when Favre was already on the roster.

If there is a QB that the team has evaluated as being potentially better than Dak and a franchise QB, then you pull the trigger and draft him even if it’s in the first round if he is appropriately rated on your board. If that’s how you draft board stacks up you pull the trigger.

Then you bring that guy into camp and you develop him and give him every opportunity to win the job outright. If he outperforms Dak then you put your $40m QB on the bench or trade him, if it makes cap sense to do so.
A forced trade or restructure is about it, I can't see Dallas taking that cap hit next season, or in 2024.
If we advance into the post season with Dak, then a restructure will definitely be in play, and considering Cooper Rush status will be the deciding factor on drafting Daks future replacement or not.

I don't believe that is how the Cowboys feel about Dak. Clearly there are those who disagree. Cowboys signed the deal knowing full well they would be restructuring it.
Then they’re complete idiots, which shouldn’t surprise many.

I could care less about the money. That's just an excuse. Teams can work around contracts and dead money. Yeah look around the league. What QB's are lighting up the league. Mostly younger starters. Sure Dak is a top 15 QB but that's all he is ever going to be. He is not going to magically start playing better just because he has been paid. I dont blame Dak for getting paid, good for him I just wish it was another team that paid him. Dak unfortunately is not the type of QB that can elevate the players around him. With the foolishness we have running this team we need a QB that can.

and that is your take, nothing more. I certainly do not share your view sorry they do not listen to your expert advice or that of others in the peanut gallery. Jerry is an idiot yet the players on this team that have played outstanding did not draft themselves or sign themselves to contracts, so the idiots are doing something right

Like avoiding real talk about the NFL, QB's and the QB market. Its adult like to distract from talking about what really drives teams to give these guys big contracts.

But lets cry about it day in and day out. I bet you loved pre-1900's southern USA. Are you happy low-balling others? Go profit by moving goal posts or whatever slimey things you have to do to "win".

Hilarious that his cap hit is higher than Mahomes and Allen. Best thing to do is draft a QB in the incoming draft and let the rookie cook and develop, similar to Mahomes while Alex Smith was still the starter, while Prescott continues to stink it up until his contract expires. Hopefully we can keep a SB window open for that long….
Tell us you don’t understand contracts without telling us

There definitely appears to be a changing if the guard in terms of the team’s strengths. As a fan, it’s frustrating to watch one unit improve while the other struggles. The team can never seem to get both units to be strong in unison anymore.

The defense has taken a step forward and the offense a step back. Unless Dak and the offense start to ‘catch up’, the financial investments SHOULD BE on defense going forward.

It’s a results business.

No question........coz an elite or top 5 defense will keep you in every game. Honestly, if you can assure me a dominant D at the expense of Dak's contract, I'm all in.

At least we aren't Cleveland :omg:
Exactly, my first reaction was the Colts and the Browns are screwed. More the Colts cuz they just benched a whole bunch of dead money. I may be in the minority here but I don't think Deshaun Watson is worth it. What was Cleveland thinking? That much guaranteed money. That's a really bad contract.

I'll put it this way .........if you can find me a rookie QB that can guarantee me a better record than 12-5 last season.......let's talk. I say guarantee coz Dak has done it. In other words, we know what we have with Dak, but drafting a rookie?

Who cares what the regular season record is. I'd rather be 1-15 and have the first overall pick than be 15-1 and lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Remember, Mahomes has a 10 year deal, Dak's is effectively 4 years. With a CAP friendly first year, and a restructure in the 2nd, Dak's CAP impact next year and in 2024 are unavoidable, unless they extend him again. The Worst part of Dak's contract is the term. If he was getting $40 million for 10 years even I would not complain about his deal. Mahomes is getting $45 million for 10 years.
Mahomes is getting 45 million until the QBs above him in salary becomes too much. Then Mahomes will walk into the GMs office and let him know it is time to give him a new deal to pay him up at the top again. Mahomes dictates what he wants, and the Chiefs will comply.

There is such a thing as a trade up in draft position. If there is a good QB that falls a little you have to consider it.

I can promise you that cap number for 2023 will be restructured

That's it, push the money down the road,
and you know Jerry is going to extend his contract to stretch out the impact.

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today...
