I'm pretty sure that the Billy Cannon pick was forced on us by Bum Bright.

It's strange how the last 2 OL we picked in the 1st round (Shaw & Richards)were busts b/c of injuries. We seem to do much better w/ 2nd and 3rd roubd picks for OL (Flo, E. Williams, Allen, Gurode).

1- greg ellis instead of Randy Moss

I'd go with Rod Hill off that list, I suppose. Honestly I was pretty young when most of those guys were drafted. The biggest bust that I can easily identify with, for myself, as someone I actually watched a lot of was Carver. He never did anything compared to what I was made to believe he was going to do here.

Hill, Sherrard and Noonan - Why? Because those are the three players that come to mind when I remember the downfall of Tom Landry. Right or wrong, those picks stand out as the end of an era to me.

Ellis is not a bust and at the time it was the right move
And we still haven't won a playoff since.....At the time we should have drafted Moss, no if ands or butts about it. Jerry let the media dictate he not take Moss and he blew it. plain and simple, the whole world including us here at Cowboyszone knows we should have grab Moss or else we would not be still talking about this one draft for 12 years now.......

The Moss draft is the only past draft we ever talk about consistantly, meaning we mess up in not taking Moss...

With this years draft looming and the Boys having two 1st round selections. I was wondering what 1st rounder/s of the past was/were the biggest bust in your opinion. Here are just a few names that some of us would probably like to forget. With the exception of Jim Jeffcoat...the early to mid 80'S was brutal.

Danny Noonan
David LaFluer
Shante Carver
Mike Sherrard
Kevin Brooks
Billy Cannon
Rod Hill

Just for grins! :D
Bobby Carpenter - Still too early to decide if were fair
Marcus Spears - Still early - but no way can we put him in the class of the guys above.

Please include Howard Richards. :D

With everything that was going on in Dallas at that time do you really think adding a headcase like Moss would have been a good idea? He would have had Irvin in his drug days as a mentor......not a good mix.

Jerry went with the good character player and it was a good choice then and still a good choice today.

And what would Moss have done to change that playoff drought? We'd have had Moss and Irvin only for the 98 season (We went to the playoffs that year anyway, I believe) and the first, what, 3 games of the 99 season? After that Irvin was done with a neck injury.

By the end of that same 99 year Johnson was done with a neck injury and just one season late Aikman was through cause of consussions.

So that drought, of 5-11 years, would very likely, in fact I'll say it absolutely would have, still been there cause who was going to take the pressure off Moss on the other side? Who was going to, you know, actually throw him the ball?

Having Moss during his first 4 or 5 years would have been a bust cause we didn't have the QB play for the majority of that time for it to even matter. Do you honestly believe with our revolving door of QBs during that time that Moss would have been the ideal player to have had? That Randy that every one was so down on in Oakland for 2 years...take that Randy and magnify it by 10 cause that's the Randy you'd have gotten with our shoddy QB situation during that time.

If we have Moss, who says Irvin gets hurt. Alot of ifs.....Who says Aikman gets another concussion we don't know, maybe with to great WRs we don't trade for Galloway and use one of those picks on a QB,,,, alot of thing play into it this....

How would having Moss necassarily change Irvin getting hurt on a slant route? How would him being there have kept Arrington from plowing through Aikman and ending his career?

I guess him running around on the field maybe, if we were really lucky, would have changed those two plays and erased a huge chunk of horrible Cowboys history but I don't buy that for one moment.

Moss would have been here, during a run (and I can only go by the run that we actually had then) where the QB play was beyond piss poor.

Irvin would be running the slant routes because we know Moss isn't going to. :laugh2:

That is not entirely true. We only had one starting DE going into that draft. The failure of Jerry Jones to secure another one dictated that we draft one and draft one early. When we were on the clock Greg Ellis was still on the board. The decidion was reached to bypass some of the questionable character issues Moss had and go with someone who could start at DE.

Additionally, had we drafted Moss, he wouldn't have been a Cowboy all these years like Ellis has been. Moss would have left for free agency many years ago. Just like he told the Raiders he would do that is why they traded him.

Becuase Aikman would have thrown a bomb to Moss on that play, Safety's would have played deeper, That play probably would have not been called that play, still regardless to my point is we should have taken Moss and I bet many on this board think we should have also.....

And that's their opinion and they have every right to it just like I have mine. I stick by my opinion that Jerry made the right choice.
