With that logic then Howard Richards gets honorable mention. He never lived up with his 1st round status due to injuries and bad play and who did we pass to draft him? Howie Long and Mike Singletary both in the HOF. In 1982 we drafted Rod Hill and passed on another HOF in Andre Tipett. Can you imagine that front seven on defense with Randy White, Too Tall Jones, Harvey Martin, Howie Long, and Andre Tippet?

What you are saying may very well be true, and I would love to have had that defensive combination.

However, passing up Warfield directly impacted ending fabulous seasons like what the Cowboys had this past season. Warfield tore through the Cowboys in 1968 and 1969 when they posted 12-2 and 11-2-1 seasons respectively.

Also, Warfield went to Miami and helped them to an undefeated season.

This is why I think Appleton is the biggest bust.

You know, I hate to put guys like Cannon, Sherrard, and even Robert Shaw on this list due to the fact that they were busts due to injuries.

The biggest bust of all was Scott Appleton in 1964.

He never played a down, and was cut from the team his rookie year.

Plus who did the Cowboys pass up by taking Appleton?

Paul Warfield!

Imagine Warfield and Bob Hayes as the receivers for Dallas in the late 60s?

Instead, Dallas gets bounced out twice by Cleveland when the Cowboys had 12-2 and 11-2-1 seasons.

So, yes, SCOTT APPLETON IS THE BIGGEST BUST IN COWBOYS HISTORY.

Is that correct? Appleton was drafted by both the Cowboys and Oilers. Did he even sign a contract with Dallas and get cut? Or did he just join Houston and never gave Dallas a chance?

Dallas still had plenty of good weapons in those years. It was the QB who did a poor job of getting the ball to them in the playoff losses to Cleveland. A guy named Craig Morton.

Randy Moss has yet to carry a team to a Superbowl victory and he would not have taken Dallas back to one, either in the late 90s and early 00s.

By 1998 the team had lost a lot of depth that it had from the early 90s. It also lost some quality starters.

The triplets were just past their prime in 1998. Irvin was in his 11th season, Aikman was in his 10th season and Smith was in his 9th season. They were not playing at the same level as they were when they were winning titles.

Drafting Randy Moss would not have change too much about Dallas. Maybe they would have won a few more games and scored a few more points, but they would still not have won or even competed for titles. He also was not going to help the defense. Plus Chan Gailey probably would not have known what to do with him. Maybe take him out on 3rd downs or leave him in to block.

Passing on Moss was not the worst thing Dallas could have or has done.

With this years draft looming and the Boys having two 1st round selections. I was wondering what 1st rounder/s of the past was/were the biggest bust in your opinion. Here are just a few names that some of us would probably like to forget. With the exception of Jim Jeffcoat...the early to mid 80'S was brutal.

Danny Noonan
David LaFluer
Shante Carver
Mike Sherrard
Kevin Brooks
Billy Cannon
Rod Hill

Just for grins! :D
Bobby Carpenter - Still too early to decide if were fair
Marcus Spears - Still early - but no way can we put him in the class of the guys above.

I take Shante Carver from that list and David LaFluer. Both was predicted in the draft to be good but turn out to be below average players.

and as for Bobby Carpenter, I believe he don't get enough playing time on defense to make an impact. I believe the Cowboys also need to switch back to the 4-3....

I always thought Rod Hill was kind of the gold standard answer to that question. The "B" word was used very early on with him.

I heard some pundit saying a week or so ago that Gil Brandt once drafted a really fast guy who wasn't that fast once he got to camp. They went back to his college campus and measured the 40 track, and it was 38 yards long. My first thought was whether that could've been Hill... Though maybe not, since he was a pretty good athlete. He just couldn't play.

Hate to say it, but there's a good chance that some guys mentioned in this thread, like Carver, will long pass Bobby Carpenter. At least Hill was #25 overall.

And in a quick check to make sure where Hill was picked, what about Kevin Brooks? I barely even remember him.

Those two guys stand out to me as well. I'm thinking it's because many of us were expecting them to fill the big shoes of Charles Haley and Jay Novacek. Probably wasn't fair in that regard, but neither of these guys were 1st round talent.

Of the guys that I can remember well.....here's my top 5

1a. Billy Cannon - I know injuries affected him
1b. Rod Hill
3. Shante Carver
4. David Lafluer -
5. Howard Richards

As Bill Parcells would say in that Coors light commercial "that's a good thing" :D

LaFleur was not a bust...his had a career ending back injury

before he was injured he was quite good...he posted decent numbers in Chan Gailey's invisible TE offense...and he made a couple of highlight film TD grabs as a rookie in 1997...he was also an outstanding blocker

Youre right. I somewhat biased towards him because I didn't like the selection.

Trevor Pryce and Ross Verba were the only guys picked after Lafleur in the first rd that amounted to much, so it isnt like we lost out on somebody...everyone knew we badly needed a TE in 1997...Novecek's career ending back injury caught us off guard and partly ruined the 96 season, and it was obvious Bjornson wasnt the answer at TE...we never had a shot at Tony Gonzalez (he was picked at 13, we traded up to take LaFleur at 22)

Someone came up with the the phrase..."Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" for Rod Hill.

What else is there to say? :D

There was also Aaron Kyle, who stunk it up pretty good.

When I think of Aaron Kyle, I always remember Super Bowl XIII and Kyle's poor tackle attempt on John Stalworth, who ended up going 72 yards down the field for a TD. :banghead:

At least he had an acting career to fall back on. Didn't you just love seeing him eaten by the shark in "Jaws". And of course, his role in "Black Sunday" was amazing.........:lmao2:
