I just want to know can we throw Steve Walsh in here since we used the number 1 over all pick on him...

Good call, but he did get that 1 win and a bunch of draft picks for us.

Rod Hill...

I don't consider Billy Cannon a "bust" since he was injured. We'll never know if he was any good.

I consider a bust one that we had high hopes for but never panned out as a good player.

I agree. Billy Cannon Jr. had star written all over him until the injury. That was damn shame.

Hill, Sherrard and Noonan - Why? Because those are the three players that come to mind when I remember the downfall of Tom Landry. Right or wrong, those picks stand out as the end of an era to me.

This was my thinking on Hill and Cannon and why those names jumped out at me.

Cowboys decline from legit SB contender of the 70's to not quite good enough in the 80's started on defense.

Hill and Cannon coulda shoulda or at least in my mind were supposed to reverse that dewfensive decline.

If they had not drafted then traded Steve Walsh, then they would not have ended up in position to draft Emmitt Smith in 1990. Blair Thomas was the first running back taken that year (#2 overall) and it was rumored that Jimmy liked him. Blair Thomas was an absolute bust.

Drafting Steve Walsh was one of the smartest things that Jimmy ever did.

No. Steve Walsh was traded to New Orleans for 3 picks, which would later become Emmitt Smith. Walsh actually played 11 seasons in the NFL.

I don't know if it was the smartest thing he ever did. That pick would have been the #1 over all pick in the NFL the next year. We could have traded down and probably aquired more picks for it, had we not drafted Walsh in the supplemental. The other interesting angle, and many don't remember this but NE wanted us to take Nate Moore for them in the 90 Supplemental Draft for them, in exchange for several additional picks. Had the Cowboys done that, we never would have gotten Emmitt. So you see, NE has been out to get us for years.

With this years draft looming and the Boys having two 1st round selections. I was wondering what 1st rounder/s of the past was/were the biggest bust in your opinion. Here are just a few names that some of us would probably like to forget. With the exception of Jim Jeffcoat...the early to mid 80'S was brutal.

Danny Noonan
David LaFluer
Shante Carver
Mike Sherrard
Kevin Brooks
Billy Cannon
Rod Hill

Just for grins! :D
Bobby Carpenter - Still too early to decide if were fair
Marcus Spears - Still early - but no way can we put him in the class of the guys above.

You know, I hate to put guys like Cannon, Sherrard, and even Robert Shaw on this list due to the fact that they were busts due to injuries.

The biggest bust of all was Scott Appleton in 1964.

He never played a down, and was cut from the team his rookie year.

Plus who did the Cowboys pass up by taking Appleton?

Paul Warfield!

Imagine Warfield and Bob Hayes as the receivers for Dallas in the late 60s?

Instead, Dallas gets bounced out twice by Cleveland when the Cowboys had 12-2 and 11-2-1 seasons.

So, yes, SCOTT APPLETON IS THE BIGGEST BUST IN COWBOYS HISTORY.

With that logic then Howard Richards gets honorable mention. He never lived up with his 1st round status due to injuries and bad play and who did we pass to draft him? Howie Long and Mike Singletary both in the HOF. In 1982 we drafted Rod Hill and passed on another HOF in Andre Tipett. Can you imagine that front seven on defense with Randy White, Too Tall Jones, Harvey Martin, Howie Long, and Andre Tippet?

Some guys were quiet busts ... guys like Bill Thomas and Appleton.

But some guys were just so prolific at disappointment, like Rod Hill.

When I saw the title of this thread, Rod Hill's name immediately jumped into my mind.

This was a Gil Brandt pick all the way. He loved the kid's athletic ability.

A lot of these misses were when the team put too much emphasis on measurables and physical skills and didn't pay enough attention to the player's intangibles -- heart and mind.

But we ended up getting a #1, #2, #3 for him.

Hill or Cannon.
Lefluer battled injury problems, that no one really would know about. Sherrard suffered 2 broken legs before he really got going. I think Noonan also had some injuries, knee I think. Never really recovered from it.

Brooks would be 3rd on the list of busts. Carver was a bust to some degree, but he did have some decent moments and was serviceable. I think we label him as a big bust only because he didn't live up to OUR expectations of being the next Charles Haley. Or that's my opinion anyway.

No it happened during a game, I don't remember if it was regular or preseason.

He met a running back head on at the LOS and hurt his neck, but I believe it was then found he had a narrow spinal channel just like what ended Irvin's career. He retired because he risked permanent paralysis.

He may have been a bust for the real Cowboys, but Danny Noonan can be a beast on Tecmo Super Bowl.

Bill Thomas was a first round pick, so he gets my vote for all time bust. Coach Landry and Tex must be shaking their heads in the here-after over that one.
