Biggest individual player surprise

I'm surprised how bad Harris has been.

I expected big things from Carter and Crawford, that's one of the reasons why I talked about all summer how this team has so much young talent with potential to grow.

Escobar, complete non factor and frankly and huge bust right now.

I don't think Escobar is a hugh bust nor a bust. How many drops has he had?
How many throws his direction. Has he improved in pass protection?

The question I have is why aren't they using him. You know Murray is getting
30 attempts a game,Dez might get ten and I think there's a guy on the team named Witten
and his pretty good. Some minor players also get opportunities.

This thread can be any player in the league but of course Cowboys players take preference.

Who is the biggest surprise, in terms of production or lack of?

Leary is my candidate, I thought this guy was going to wash out when we signed him as a UDFA, who also got the biggest signing bonus that year too I believe. I just remember how his degenerative knee condition was also the topic brought up with him. It's nice to see he's actually a solid guard that 31 teams passed on.

It's difficult to find a surprise because I had higher expectations of most of the players being named in this thread than most people had for them.

I expected good play from Leary, RoMc, Durant, Crawford, Scandrick, etc.. I even posted reviews of RoMc, Durant and Leary in the off-season saying that they have very good ability based on previous game footage.

I guess Mincey might be the surprise player for me. He has been solid.

Another player that has looked better than expected is Randle. I said in the off-season that we didn't really see enough of him to know if he could play. He has not had many snaps, but when he has played he physically looks much better than last season. I don't know if he lost weight or what happened, but he looks much quicker than before.

Edit: I'll add that I'm surprised by how many snaps the WR Street has received. He must be doing something right. I think he had about 14 snaps against the Texans.

Yes, there are some players that have only received minimal snaps, but have played reasonably well in the snaps they have played. Escobar, Randle, and Dunbar have all played a low number of snaps, but have done reasonably well when they did play.

Then you should have been disappointed 3 years ago when it was obvious he wasn't.

Oh so after the first year i shouldn't be disappointed anymore? He has/had more potential than any DB we have and we wasted a first rounder on him. Remember the three year rule, he still had time to turn things around and I thought (like many others here) he would be a surprise player this year. Hell yes I am still disappointed.

I'd say either Leary or Mincey. See todays Broaddus thread.

Glad to see my eyes are not deceiving. Not enough mention of Mincey. He's been very disruptive. He was a fraction of a second away from multiple sacks. He's been very productive.

That's who I was going to say.

He's probably been our best DL so far. Granted, that's not saying too much, but he's looked pretty good even if the production and stats aren't necessarily there.

You and I have a similar list. Leary played well last year, I didn't expect him to regress. One of Jerry's best signings. Rolando McClain's issues were never on the field. He can play. Scandrick has been a good corner for several seasons. Crawford is doing what other players said he was capable of. Durant is playing better than ever, so he would be another candidate.

Mincey has been our best DL and best pass rusher....he is getting held all the time and I don't know why it isn't getting called. It is a surprise because there were times in training camp where Broaddus and others were reporting that he didn't look good, especially on the outside...that he might be better suited inside.

Disappointment to me has been Terrell McClain and to be honest, Henry Melton. McClain has not shown much at all and I think Melton just needs more reps and continuing to get healthy.

Wait what? Why is he a bust? Because he is underutilized? How is that his fault? Frankly that is a insult to him. His blocking is fine from all reports. Linehan just rarely calls his number.
Does "bust" imply that the player is at fault? Perhaps.

If we use "bust" to mean that the team didn't get productivity commensurate with the investment, it certainly seems that way so far with Escobar. It's not so much that he isn't getting used in the passing game: it's that he can't get on the field in front of Hanna. That's definitely a disappointment to me.

On the upside, I hoped I was right about Carter getting much better in his second year in the system, but I still find myself surprised at how right that was.

I'm with X on this -- had much more confidence in the players and coaches than many did on this forum.

The emergence after gaining experience and rehabbing from injury and getting coached up -- that's what we should expect and be patient with.

Look how many guys have improved dramatically, who were labelled as JAGs last year.

If he gets healthy and returns to form, my choice would be Spencer. His chances for return have been slim, but he's on the right track.

Exactly. Considering he's a no name on the line, he's been a pleasant surprise that's been fun to watch.
