They have their 3 projected starters at CB available and the 1st CB they drafted of the 3 is coming back to practice this week. Their 6th round CB has been good enough to make the team.

The only real issue is 3rd round pick Lewis and they probably didn't intend for him to be an immediate contributor when they drafted him. Most 3rd round picks aren't.

Lewis was a top 100 pick and it was a deep draft particularly at that position. He played in 41 games at Michigan. The concern with him were his size but mostly that DV charge and the current NFL climate.

Corner is not quite so developmentally challenged particularly for this defense. He has a lot of zone experience and he has seen pick plays as well as the bunch and combination routes. He can handle cover 3 I'm fairly confident.

Some top 100 picks don't help quickly but this one should.

My biggest concern isn't the talent on defense as much as it is the continuity and cohesion. The defense overall has been pretty stout the issue has been coverage breakdowns leading to big plays.

Last year was the first year I noticed that the middle coverage was cohesive. Guys were getting on receivers and helping each other out. I have not seen that this year. Guys are getting depth on their drops but I see far too much mechanical underneath drops that don't get under anyone. You have to be aware and adjust. Pretty much everyone has been involved in a breakdown.

What we might see if the breakdowns continue or if they just want to play the rookies is more man coverage. As its been has been a ton of zone in the preseason.

Scandrick, Carroll, and Brown. Those are the corners we'll have against the Giants for sure.

If Lewis and Awuzie can't play, then what? Are we going to run out Duke Thomas and Marquez White against the Giants? w

Even if a nugget comes from the upcoming waiver wire, will that player be ready to play in a week?

If Beckham heals in time for Week 1, how are the Cowboys going to holdup against Beckham, Shepard, Marshall, and Engram with no pass rush and these corners?

The pass rush is getting some pressure. That helps. Those CBs are good, solid and ok. The backups are an issue since we don't know who they are.

OBJ will likely not play and if he does then my guess he won't be near 100%. Marshall scares me as we have no Carr this year. White might be necessary or move Jones to CB and put him on him. Doubt it starts that way but it could.

Eli is going to get the ball out quickly anyway so don't expect a lot of sacks.

I would temper expectations for Lewis.

He's a bit of a conundrum, because he has great tape, but measured and tested poorly.

In fact, if you look at Slaytics, which attempts to gauge a player's athleticism with regards to their size (essentially a modified combination of SPARQ and True Freak Rating), Lewis falls in the lower bound, which is a big red flag.

Players in this range have a poor track record of success in the NFL, and have an extremely small chance of ever becoming an elite player - since 1999, players that fall in Lewis's range have had 0 1st-team All-Pro selections and only 4 pro bowl appearances.

Of course there can be exceptions, and pro bowl appearances aren't the best measure of success, but even your chances of getting a starter in the range compared to higher ranges is greatly diminished. I think this is one of the main reasons why Lewis fell in the draft.

One player that also fell in the lower range is Derek Barnett. He was picked 14th overall by the Eagles and has performed well in the preseason. It'll be interesting to see how he turns out, because the odds are certainly stacked against him, and it was a risky move to select him with such a premium pick.

(Commanders "steal of the draft" Tim Williams also falls in the lower bound. Like Lewis, he probably fell due to his poor testing.)

But I thought we had brought in more talent and great job with Jerry taking a lesser role ??

Our offense will keep them off the field . Right?

Oh but we're missing the NFL leading rusher.

Yep. Erod. Huge mismatches for us.

But Jaylon looking good and Taco had 2 sacks while our secondary looked horrid most of preseason and they played quite a bit. Sorry, can't help myself from being sarcastic.

Theres always hope Eli throws a costly pick or Dak can be a hero.

not sure if serious or that big of a homer
That's what I was wondering . Our defenses are the same? That was a serious statement . Ok and why I didn't bother replying .

And yea we had better stats against the run because we were near the bottom in passing defense and most teams were behind.

I'm assuming everyone here watches all the games not just stat hounds ? Lol

Mike is not a homer... this is an interesting comment from him. I'd like to see him expound upon this subject, but that might be for a thread he should start.
We're all homers aren't we? Some just aren't afraid to take their shades off .

Nothing's changed in Big D. We're still totally dependent on our offense.

We'll struggle against great defenses and prolific passers and receivers will probably torch our defense with no pass rush and weak coverage.

No news here...

Call me an optimist, but I'll take another year of 13 wins and finishing 3rd in point differential (behind only the 2 Superbowl participants), and take my chances with a team of that caliber in the playoffs.

Carroll alone makes that statement questionable.

He is a step down from even the mediocre play of Carr and Claiborne.

He's going to frustrate the crud out of you. Prepare thyself.

Carr and Claiborne weren't as bad as they were made out to be here. The new guys will have issues as well if/when the QB has all day to throw.

It's about pressuring the passer. Do that consistently and the secondary looks a lot better. Fail to do so and it doesn't make much difference who is back there.

The biggest issue right now is somehow getting you to see and embrace the many positives going into this season bruh.
It is usually the negative aspects of your team that gets you beat. Remember Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells saying it's not the number of positive plays that win games it's the number of NEGATIVE plays that cost you games.

If I go to a doctor, I don't want him constantly focusing on my internal organs that are working properly, but I want him to focus on the ones that aren't. I have no problem reading some poster's so called negative comments. How many times have we seen our preseason liabilities come back to bite us and lead to another disappointing season?

Do we hang banners for regular season champs?
