I remember an interview I watched with Bill Parcells after he left the Jets and before he took over the Cowboys. I think he was doing the ESPN pregame show.
When the discussion got around to Pre-Season games Bill said that Fans and Sports Media have no idea what they are watching.
Each Team has different goals and ideas about how to handle individual personnel or their teams as a whole.
He said although, he always wanted his team to score more than the opponent, he would often put players and the team at big disadvantage on purpose to find out
if they could overcome. He also wanted to find out who would keep giving effort even when they knew they weren't getting a fair shake. Preseason is the perfect time to see how your players handle adversity.
He also said, when evaluating young players, Tom Landry told him his first year as the Giants Head Coach that you have to give players 3 years before giving up on their potential.

there's definitely some clueless fans in our fan base that are already pulling the parachute saying our backup sucks so bad, we're done...
oh that's right last year they said we had a historically bad offseason and guess what happened twelve wins in a second round playoff berth!!
That's what happened, this is when fans need to shut up they need to stop trying to make things up and create problems if there are problems they'll get it fixed but these backups will look a lot better when they're subbing in to the number one offenses and defenses when they're just one guy in between the other starters, not playing shoulder to shoulder with a lot of guys who are probably not even going to make the team...
they are being thrown to the wolves, they are being challenged, that is what's happening here and a lot of these guys who are getting all this backlash are going to be a lot better than people think just like last year historically bad offseason huh no depth somehow..
I don't know how we overcame a lot of injuries and made it to the second round of the playoffs with a historically bad offseason even ESPN was saying that This is why we need to stop trying to over evaluate the offseason, that's why fans and a lot of sports reporters don't know nothing, they know spit! They're just creating drama and hyperbole and stating opinions nobody knows what's gonna happen that's the greatest thing about sports there's only 17 games we can enjoy one at a time and see what it builds into by the end of the year..
