As a Nets fan, I'm this close to hoping they just tell the Nuggets to stuff it. It's obvious the Nets have the best deal out there, but the Nugs keep trying to get more. Screw taking Al Harrington's contract. No one's doing that.

Granted, even the "best deal out there" is 40 cents on the dollar for someone like 'Melo, but they're not exactly negotiating from a place of strength.

That is what ticks me off, they should of gotten a deal done for this clown over the summer. Their front office is as stupid as it gets. Heck his friends even toasted to him playing in NY over the summer at his wedding. A wedding attended by people in Denver's front office. Now they are trying to say they thought they might be able to get a deal done. Give me a break.

The Nuggets have enough decent players they can at least be competitive without Melo. It was stupid to hang onto him this long, the only they got was to watch his trade value lessen each day.

Carmelo Anthony will be playing for the New York Knickerbockers in 2011-2012.

The question at this point is, will NJ make the trade w/o an extension?

This is awesome. Now we get him w/o getting bent over by the Nuggets.

Now we get him by the deadline though and might miss the playoffs

so your advocating trading for melo w/o an extension? At the very least it'll cost you guys Favors because draft picks alone won't get it done.

No, I dont think he likes the Knicks THAT much more than the Nets to give up $40M. The Nets finally stood up for themselves and when Denver comes crawling back they can get a fair deal done. Favors: 12 and 6 w/ 3 blocks. Youngest player in the league.

Nah this deal is over Melo isn't going to the Nets... He sees Amare over there at the Knicks and is straight thinking titles. He's goin to the Knicks.

Also, the Nets have too many good draft picks and cap room I don't think they should even get Melo. They have the foundation to build an awesome team already.

are we reduced to quoting random stat lines? FWIW, he avereges a measly 6 ppg and 5rpg (less than one bbg).

As far as 40 million goes, who says the Knicks won't trade for him? Denver has been reluctant to deal with us because u guys were offering the world, but our offer is likely better than any "rental" offer u or houston will offer

Nah, this draft sucks and we wouldnt win the lotto anyway. As for FA, Jeff Green and AK47 is just ok. And the 2012 class is shaping up nicely but w/o Melo I dont think they would have shot at those guys

The point was that was the first time he was allowed to play like a kid and he showed sick potential. Denver took notice

The Knicks can do w/e they want but their best offer cant be Derrick Favors alone. Melo has made it clear he wants the extension so what Denver needs to do is keep giving the Knicks the stiff arm. That lets Melo know its either the Nets extension or lose close to $40M less by not signing an extension before the new CBA

Relevant

http://blogs.denverpost.com/nuggets/2011/01/25/carmelo-anthony-discusses-his-future/

I asked, “If they trade you somewhere, and you don’t sign the extension, you’re screwed …” But then, before he could answer, I justified by saying, “Well, not necessarily screwed…” But, Melo flashed a smile and said: “Screwed.”

Favors, Murphy, and the 2012 Warriors 1st the Nets own

What a crazy mexiacan stand-off. He wants Knicks and an extension. Knicks want him in FA. Nuggets want Nets offer. Nets want Melo and extension

Next paragraph

He continued: “There are a lot of things that come into play when you look at this situation. The fact that they can send you wherever they want to. The fact that, wherever they send me, would I sign the extension there? It’s a lot of stuff I think about through all of this.”

Doesn't seem like it's a forgone conclusion that if you land him via trade w/o a meeting that he will definately sign an extension, which has been what you've said all along.

Still curious cuz you never quit answered, would you trade Favors, your first and warriors first without word from melo that he will sign an extension? Add in what ever bad contract you're forced to take (Al Harrington, Richard Hamliton who ever).

Oh I know he wants the Knicks and everything. But if the Nuggets and Knicks play this right they can pretty much force Melo to sign the extension or lose $40M. If he lets himself hit FA then I tip my hat to him.

Oh my god no. Favors is looking like Al Horford at worst. He can still add 15 lbs no problem, hes a pup.

2 problems with that, number 1, NJ won't have the talent to compete for anything next year and can only hope to get either CP3 or DHoward in 2012 and Melo knows it, so I don't see him caving just because he's traded to NJ. Second, if he hits FA, Denver will likely agree to a S&T in order to get a TPE, and the number he lost won't be 40 mil.

Just calculated it, but the number is closer to 6 mil over the same 4 years (not opting out plus the 3 years). The "screwed" part comes in if the reduce max salaries (currently 30% for players with 7-9 years exp), but if they reduce all current salaries accordingly, then it doesn't matter.

If everyone knew that Melo would sign an extension before the old CBA, why would Denver trade him? Using this logic, hold him and he would sign an extension at some point before the CBA expires

He wont be a true FA, he has an ETO. I dont believe this is possible but I will look into it

Ive heard that it would be hard for them to roll back the salaries of already signed deals. Lot of angry stars.

What if hes not bluffing? That extension has been on the table for months now and hes not budging. You play that game of chicken and by the trade-deadline its obvious you just lost a star for nothing when Toronto already showed you how stupid that was.

Not much of an answer. Lot of uncertainty

Can Denver trade Melo in a S&T over the summer?

Larry Coon: What if S&T goes away in the new agreement. It's one of the reasons salaries are overinflated. It's like a credit line, helping a consumer buy something he really can't afford.
