The run hasn’t killed us. We was middle of the pack in run defense last year. That’s avg and while improving everywhere is always the goal you could have got a starting RG that we don’t have now. You could have got a CB who steps in for Gillmore next year. A center who plays guard this year and slides over next year. Guys who play every down bit 30% of snaps
I hope Quinn can get more out of him and I trust Quinn. But actual college production is the best indicator of what a guy will do at the next level
Did you not watch the 49ers game?

The pick is just whatever for me.

Doesn’t do anything for this team. We’re the same as we were this time yesterday.
We been that way for a while stuck in neutral. Going to take more than a DL/TE to get out of this funk.

Daniel Jones is terrible, but they can run the ball.

The rest of your comment is comical
The Giants and 9ers have bad offenses because they can't throw. The Eagles have a good offense because they can.

That's not a mystery.

3 techs penetrate and pressure but a good one pushes the pocket so the QB has. I place to stepup
He has the athletic ability but I like guys who’ve done it on the field not just have the traits to do it. In the 3rd-4th rounds you can take guys with traits but no production. At 26 I prefer some production in his college career.
A half sacks and 6 TFL in 39 games doesn’t scream production
DJ Reader had one half sack his last year at Clemson.

Hey, I don't know what to make of this guy myself, his scouting reports appear to be all over the place. However, you absolutely cannot rate the NT position on stats.

ABSOLUTELY…but many of the “experts” skewered the pick (saying it was at LEAST a round early).
That was one of the stupidest takes I've ever seen. Even after he turned out to be a top 5 C, there were those claiming we should've taken him later. Sometimes, people are just dumb.

First off the conversation is about stopping the run and who can run the football.

Reader had 0 sacks last year though lol.

Reader is who I kind of keep thinking of for Mazi, but he's not really a first-round player and it took him like 5 years to be as good as he is. He's been much more disruptive the last two years than he ever was in Houston.

Right. And I'm saying that worrying about stopping the run because of what SF and NYG do is pointless, because those offenses are terrible.

not sure how you can scout and say he isn't a good athlete. the rest of the comments are points to watch.
Yeah, that one baffled me. Nothing he said after that was worth reading because I don't think he scouted him. The other concerns are noted...all that said Will and crew have earned my trust ten fold!

Ok, and one of these DE's probably wouldnt have been in on first down. Dont get all scientific about it. ITs not a sexy pick, but its 100% our biggest need. If this kid can come in and play two downs and clog up the run its what we have never had and needed the most.
That is the key right there why some don't like it. It is not sexy or flashy. However if they did go sexy or flashy, those same ones would say Jerry blew it, they should have went with X player.
You know the routine.

I am still not sure how I feel about it (still digesting it all and reading all the posts yet as well), but am very pleased overall. BPA on the board and an area of need, a huge need.
I will now look at more film and read reports. All I know is he played well against Ohio State the games I seen him play and parts of other games.

He is still learning as well, as the media guys on ESPN said he has room to grow, and if he can get a push on pass rushing plays, he may become a good pass rusher as well.
Quinn will get him going in the right direction, and Micah already saying come on in and help get us to a SB. Welcome to a talented defense.

First, scouts have been wrong before - many times.

I don't know what kind of player he will be but I do know the Cowboys needed help at DT and he looks like he will be better than anything the Cowboys have outside of Hankins. The fact is, no one really knows how any of the first round picks will turn out once the whistle blows. I don't like hearing bad things about his motor, but we heard the same things about Jordan Davis last year - and actually witnessed in in big games when he took himself out frequently.

I also don't like the off the field issues. Dumb gun charges are indicative of bad things potentially. But Jalen Cater has a few off the field issues as well and possibly signs of an attitude problem. No one drafted at 26 is a sure thing. If Smith is better than Gallimore, he improves the defense. That is a very low bar.

Was he worth a first round pick? Maybe not, but he would not be there late in the 2nd round so taking him a few picks early isn't terrible.

I really don't think there was a pick at 26 that would have been sensational. Maybe Joey Porter would excite some people.

Smith was excellent versus Ohio State.

Not only was Smith out there for 78% of snaps against an explosive Ohio State offense with a stout offensive line, but he was effective. Three of his four tackles were run stops of 3 or fewer yards, and he also generated a team-high three pressures on quarterback C.J. Stroud, according to Pro Football Focus.
Yeah I hated Smith in his games against OSU...but now love him, he is a Dallas Cowboy.

This is just as boring as taking Tyler last year, and Fredrick way before that. How has that turned out?
This is basically just the defense version of taking Frederick.

The 2013 draft was the same in that there was really only 10-12 real first-round guys, so you're just taking a player you like in the back half of the first.

They scored 19 points and averaged 3.5 ypc. Considering how bad the Cowboys offense was that game, that's more than solid.
The 49ers had 6 more 1st downs and held TOP by 6 minutes.
Part of why the offense was terrible was the 49ers controlled the clock.
Quick passing and run game took away our pass rush.

NTs don't get sacks. They make the rest of the D better.

Reader was good right away. He was a revelation as a 6th round pick in Houston. And he was also a playmaker there. Here, I have a take on him after his 2nd season in Houston: "Anchor in the middle of the D occupies blocks but also makes big plays."

Reader played a lot of DE as a rook because he moves so well.

Buddy, SF has beat us the last two years and in at least one year they ran all over us.
