3. DEMARCUS LAWRENCE, Boise State (6-3, 250, 4.72, 1-2) – Redshirted one year and played another in junior college, started 23 games in 2012-'13 at Boise and declared a year early. "Down defensive end there," one scout said. "Pass rusher. Kind of a rangy guy. Got length, some rush skill and pretty solid production. He's had a few off-the-field issues. You hoped he would run much better." Finished with 120 tackles (34 for loss), 20 sacks and 10 big plays. Garnered 12 sacks in his JUCO season. "I like him as an outside backer," said another scout. "Problem is he's been suspended three times." Wonderlic of 20. "He's a little guy who is quick but not strong," a third scout said. "I don't know what the heck you're going to do with him. He didn't play linebacker there. He strictly rushed the passer. He's not physical. He was extremely disappointing. In fact, the entire Boise State team this year was disappointing." From Aiken, S.C.

Looks like there wasn't a consensus opinion from the scouts on Lawrence... well that's why he is a 2nd round pick as opposed to a 1st round pick.

I really thought they were going up for Ealy, I dont like this trade at all. We could have stayed where we were and still got a pretty good dl. Have to think Lawrence would have slipped quite far in this draft with his off the field issues.

If Marinelli liked him enough to spend two picks on him, I'm sure he'll be a great player. I trust Marinelli. However, we need a lot more than just one player on defense. Not sure if we'll get starting-caliber players with a 4th, 5th and six 7ths.

If he turns out to be a quality pass rusher, then it was worth it. If not, this will prove to be a bad move. The Cowboys need playerS, just just one player. They can't afford to trade their 2nd and 3rd for one player. Very unhappy about this pick. Hope they prove me wrong.

From SI
Analysis
Lawrence is a fourth year junior who is entering the draft as an underclassmen. He started off at Butler Community College in Kansas in 2010 and redshirted. He played for Butler in 2011 and then transferred to Boise State. He has been a two year starter at Boise at defensive end and has been a very productive player. In 2013 he totaled 72 tackles with 20.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. Lawrence lines up at DE in the Bronco defense. He is quick off the ball and with his good instincts he is always around the ball. He lacks great size at 6-2, 252, but he has long arms, knows how to play with leverage and is strong. You seldom see him knocked off the ball and he knows how to use his hands to shed. He is best as a pass rusher, as he is quick off the ball and uses his hands well to get by his opponent. He has the explosiveness through his hips to gain ground as a bull rusher. He also has the flexibility to lower his shoulder and get under his opponent when speed rushing. With his quick feet and hand use he is good with counter moves. At the combine, he did linebacker drills and showed the back pedal, turn and burst needed to play in coverage. His plant and drive in transition was also good. What lacked was his hands, as he struggled to catch the ball. Overall, Lawrence will be valued the highest by the 3-4 teams. He can be an every down player as he can play the run, rush the passer and drop into coverage when needed. There are some 1 gap 4-3 schemes that will also value him as a right end because of his pass rush talents. I can see Lawrence drafted as high as the second round.
