this was a panic pick standard m.o. for those jones'

Drafting for need. This was a panic move because they didn't get their RDE in round one so had to overpay to move up in round 2. Hitchens in round 4 was a need reach since they just had to guarantee they had a backup to Lee even if it meant taking 7th round talent three rounds too soon.

watch some scouting vids of lawrence and form your own opinion:

imo, i'm with starfrombirth. i don't see a quick get-off at the snap. most of the time he seems a half step or a step slow off the snap. to me he looks like just another guy. but we'll see. hopefully i'm completely wrong since he IS a cowboy and god knows that defense needs some playmakers.

I feel the same way about the Lawrence pick as I did about the Ware pick, I didn't know who the hell either one was.

People will rewrite history though and claim they loved Ware and new he would be a stud. truth is many were upset we didn't take Merriman, especially after Merriman's PED enhanced performances.

What's it going to be then, eh?

If we got him in the second without the trade up, I think a lot of people would suddenly think he was a steal.

I did not like the trade up at all, but I feel pretty good that he can play.

If people are worried about how quick he is off the snap and so on, wait until you see Mincey. And a lot of the same people blasting this pick were perfectly okay with him being a prime target in free agency. Same for McClain. Nevermind that both have been less than dominating as professionals.

3. DEMARCUS LAWRENCE, Boise State (6-3, 250, 4.72, 1-2) – Redshirted one year and played another in junior college, started 23 games in 2012-'13 at Boise and declared a year early. "Down defensive end there," one scout said. "Pass rusher. Kind of a rangy guy. Got length, some rush skill and pretty solid production. He's had a few off-the-field issues. You hoped he would run much better." Finished with 120 tackles (34 for loss), 20 sacks and 10 big plays. Garnered 12 sacks in his JUCO season. "I like him as an outside backer," said another scout. "Problem is he's been suspended three times." Wonderlic of 20. "He's a little guy who is quick but not strong," a third scout said. "I don't know what the heck you're going to do with him. He didn't play linebacker there. He strictly rushed the passer. He's not physical. He was extremely disappointing. In fact, the entire Boise State team this year was disappointing." From Aiken, S.C.

When Ware was released the first thing I did was start looking at potential replacements...I even put together a list. Clowney and Barr were clearly at the top of that list but this guy wasn't even on my list. I'm no expert, so as I've said countless times since we drafted him I'll defer to their scouts; but having said that, I really don't have high expectations for the guy.

So, are you saying the Cowboys are justified in overspending draft picks for a player simply because he is an improvement over the scrubs we picked up off of the street during the offseason? If this is truly how the Cowboys brass feels, then we have serious issues for the foreseeable future. This is like them saying, "we can't ever have a rebuild season, we have to take what we can get when we can get it to try and contend every year." Unfortunately, that's not how good teams build their roster. A good team would only overspend if said player was better than the combination of what those two picks would yield. Barring that, they should have traded out of the pick. Personally, I would have looked to pick up more picks in next years draft, if they thought the talent was going to drop off that far. Obviously I have no way of knowing if they didn't already try to trade down or into next years draft already and couldn't find any takers, but still...I really hope they didn't reach for need here, which it very much looks like they did. But again, as I said above, for now, I'll defer to their scouts. Perhaps they are seeing something that the assessment I've read missed.
