If that really is true, and their draft evaluation process is heavily biased towards "who can help most THIS season", then their draft process is BAD. That's the exact wrong way to use the draft.
Nothing wrong with this evaluation process, especially in: a weak draft, you're picking 26th, you're pretty much a complete team with specific holes to fix. You dont follow a set process EVERY DRAFT and sometimes you have to address weaknesses. If you follow your process you end up with a roster full of excess WR's, CB and Edge rushers, whilst ignoring the bread and butter of football.

Worst pick in the last 4 years by the Cowboys. They reached for need and in the process left some very very good players on the board. This guy is David LaFluer 2.0

quick interior rushers with well-developed counters could be too much for his limited foot quickness to handle without help. He projects as a future starter for downhill offenses who covet size over athleticism.
From Lance Zierlein at NFL. Com

Read the last sentence, he doesn't fit what the Cowboys are looking for, since MM has been the head coach they have gone after more athletic type guys. Look at MM's Green Bay O lines, not a lot of big maulers there either.

It's not hard to figure out, they didn't want him or they wanted the other guy more at 58 because he wouldn't make it to their next pick and they value the TE more at this specific point in time.
Good point and I suppose we're looking at a mobile/zonal blocking system for the run (hence Schoonmaker).

....surely taking him when Strange and Kraft were still available kind of opposes that theory. The argument is that after Torrence there were no Guards left that had a chance of starting....hence taking Torrence would of been the the 'NEED' pick. We obviously chose Schoonmaker the player.

Obviously a mobile blocking system is crucial for our proposed running game.

Don’t mind the Schoonmaker pick. Firmly believe Torrance wasn’t even in the discussion because of his mobility. Sounds like it came down to a decision between Kraft and Schoonmaker. Washington was off the board because of medical stuff. Sounds like they preferred Laporte. No matter if you like the pick or not, he wasn’t going to be available at 90.

Looks similar to what we have and to Schultz, except probably a better blocker

I agree with some in thinking they could've went in a different direction, but McCarthy had to have a TE with a certain skill set.

Yep, strange how he's not seen as a receiver TE, but he appears to be a distinct upgrade on what we've got.

It wont change the narrative though, fans base their opinion on personnel groups and BPA....how the player impacts the different facets of the game just doesnt factor. So many fans commenting.....SEE LG (TORRENCE), WANT LEFT GUARD, even though the professionals probably dont see him as a fit in what we're trying to do.

@Hawkeye0202 are there stats regarding Fergershots blocking successes? Someone's actually mentioned McKeon as being the comparison due to the blocking..... as if him being on the field creates anything other than telegraphing we're about to run.

I think we view Schoonmaker as able in the receiving game, just restricted as Michigan run the ball.

Interesting those that say OG Torrence wasn't considered because of his lack of mobility and that MM wants to run the ball.....yet Dallas had previously drafted WR Lamb, re-signed WR Gallup, traded for WR Cooks, and drafted a TE in the 2nd round.....all while releasing RB Elliott, franchise tagging an injured Pollard, not drafting an OL early in the draft, and not drafting a RB until the 6th round (a tiny 5' 5" one at that).

So it would seem Dallas is again going to have Dak focus on the pass and I would think OG Torrence would have been an ideal fit to help protect Dak.....but time will tell.

Posters are mentioning Torrence inparticular because the War Room audio clearly mentions the first pick discussion was either Mazi or O-line. Its presumed that it was Avila and/or Bergeron (to switch inside), as both were gone before the 58th pick. Fans may have preferred Torrence, but I cant remember (or they havent disclosed) a heated discussion on Torrence vrs Schoonmaker so presumably, despite the apparent need for a LG, he wasnt a factor, may mentioning footwork and possibility that he's limited to RG.

Schoonmaker was the last complete TE on the board and wouldnt have lasted till 90. If you draft that late each round you sometimes have to take your guy earlier than you normally would. I believe there was about 0 chance he would have made it to 90.

The age thing is not that big of a concern. If we can get 4-5 productive years out of the guy and hes plays a lot of snaps and starts in that time it was well worth the pick. You can worry about a 2nd contract in 2027 and if hes not worth it you have more than enough time to draft a replacement in the next 4-5 drafts.

If he would be a Pass Rusher, a outside WR, a RB or a CB i would have worried more about the age.

People keep mentioning Hendershot and I don't get it. The kid had 11 catches last year along with 6 penalties (3rd highest on the entire team).

He might turn into an undrafted feel good story but he could just as easily be a guy off the roster in a few years.

I also think people are underestimating Schoonmaker's athletic ability. I believe he ranked 5th at TE in RAS in a draft that had an usual about of TEs scoring in the 90th percentile, not to mention his blocking ability.

if we are worried about paying him second contract at 29, that means he produced and proved himself for next 4 years, so we picked the right player
Smart way to look at it
