Bob Sturm: talk of Dak being untradeable is nonsense

If the Cowboys are smart, the best strategy would be to draft a high round quarterback and/or bring in a veteran quarterback to push Dak and/or compete for the starting job next season.
Clarify for me. Are you saying you potentially keep him on the roster & pay him but sit him? Simply to avoid the "cap" hit portion of the equation if you released him or traded him?

Second question, I hear a lot of definitive statements that we are "stuck" with him next year due to the cap hit. I'm assuming that is correct. But is he moveable after the 2023 season? There seems to be differing opinions on that.

Just trying to make sure I understand your plan. Thanks.

Our best bet IMO is get better on defense, like really good, and get Dak back to 2016 Dak. With a strong running back and big tall possession WR type, and quick slot WR.

I'd trade Zeke for 2 first round picks, then trade those 2 first round picks for 4 first round picks, next i would look to trade Boss man for Mahomes.... hire me for GM
You laugh but the majority of fans on here think this is possible because of years of scamming the CPU logic in Madden lol

I've been doing mock drafts on PFF, and the first thing I do is trade Dak. The second thing I do is trade Zeke. It is amazing the young teams I can build that way.

Sadly, PFF mocks are not real life. Instead we'll get the Jones boys convincing themselves that they made the right decisions, and running it back all over again.
Who in the world is going to trade for Zeke? I think you would have to offer a 1st or 2nd to get someone to take that contract. People do not trade for high priced RB contracts where the player has been in decline for the past 3-4 years.

Meanwhile Dak can just veto any trade of him so that will just not happen. So when people say Dak is untradable they mean it because I doubt Dak would sign off on any trade.

Basically the "stuck" aspect means that there is 39m in dead money due either in one year or two depending on how the cut would occur and that is a lot of dead money for one player with a team trying to contend. Though presumably if they cut Dak they are going into a rebuild so that aspect is a moot point.

Remember it was MM that pull the plug on Brett Fravr's career in Green Bay BUT he had a replacement. The point is if you are trading your starting with back-to-back 12-win seasons, you probably wanna have a better replacement in your pocket.
I guess that is why we keep KM because we don’t have a replacement,

I guess this gives clarity to the issue financially but the reality is it ain't happening, forget it........Jerry would sell the team first (LOL) AND the no-trade clause means you need Dak's blessing. Good luck....

Well at least we know we have more flexibility that we were lead to believe.

Yep, we are handicapped with these guys running our football team.
No 2 ways about it.

1st is the no trade clause. Who would trade for Dak that he would even agree too?

This is a great point. I do believe Dak has trade value and there are teams who would possibly trade for him because he is an upgrade to what they have. The Falcons are one such team. The Titans might be willing to spring for Dak. The Texans, Ravens if they lose Jackson, Raiders, Colts and Commanders all might be willing to trade for Dak. I have no doubt there are teams who would offer good compensation for Dak. But the Cowboys do not have a viable option to replace him.

The problem is, if you keep Dak and his $49 million cap hit in 2023 it limits what the team can do to keep their existing players and add some new pieces. The temptation will be for Jerry to restructure Dak and puch more salary into his voided years. This almost guarantees they have to re-sign him when his deal is up in 2025. If is a big problem for Jerry and Stephen. What will Dak ask for in 2025? The reason you trade him, if he agrees, is to get something for him.

And that is another terrible aspect of the deal Jerry gave Dak. Dak cannot be traded and they cannot apply the franchise tag to him. But is Dak wants to leave in 2025 Jerry is out of luck. There is nothing he can do about it except offer Dak even more money. Worst contract ever.

The Cowboys should seriously consider drafting a QB in 2023 and have him ready for 2025.

As I reminisce about the "Dak is better than Stafford" days, not all that long ago on this forum, I also remember that the Rams gave up 2 first round picks and their own first overall drafted QB, to get a 10 year veteran QB with a grand total of 3 playoff games and 0 playoff wins.

Hell, the Rams traded 2 first round picks to draft Goff. The Rams haven't had a first round pick in something like 7 or 8 years now.

But yea..... MAYBE we could get a 3rd rounder for Dak. Maybe.
Dak has more value than most here want to admit.
This is a QB starved league.
The real question is, who would replace Dak?

Trading him for a pile of draft picks would be fantastic. Move on from him and Zeke. Get young and deep. Then when his insane salary finally clears from the books you will be poised to strike.
